A Republican senator has blocked the promotion of a general who oversaw troops in Kabul during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, a Senate aide told NBC News . The move by Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin follows threats from President-elect Donald Trump to fire senior officers and officials who oversaw the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan in 2021. It also comes as Trump’s transition team weighs possible court-martial proceedings against current and former officers involved in the withdrawal, as NBC News previously reported. Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7 Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue was nominated for promotion to become a four-star general and to oversee U.S. Army forces in Europe. His nomination was among more than 900 proposed nominations sent to the Senate but Donahue’s was put on hold by Sen. Mullin, according to the Senate aide. Mullin’s office declined to comment. Donahue was the last American service member to board the final U.S. military plane out of Afghanistan in 2021. A night-vision photograph of Donahue boarding a cargo plane went viral, capturing the symbolism of the end of America’s 20-year-long war. After the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan fell to Taliban militants, Donahue — then commander of the 82nd Airborne Division — was ordered to Kabul to oversee the withdrawal of U.S. forces, American embassy staff and Afghans who fought alongside American troops. Retired Gen. Tony Thomas, former head of Special Operations Command, said in a social media post that the decision was a “disgrace” and that Donahue was being treated as a “political pawn.” Heather Nauert, who worked for the State Department in Trump’s first presidential term, said in a social media post that she is a Trump supporter and likes Sen. Mullin but disagreed with the hold put on Donahue’s promotion. “Unless there are facts I don’t know, holding up military promotions bc of our disgraceful Afghanistan withdrawal is wrong,” she wrote. Donahue is currently commander of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty in North Carolina. His promotion could now be at risk as the current Senate will soon go into recess and the new Republican-controlled Congress will start its work in 2025. This article first appeared on NBCNews.com . Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) has decided to discontinue sourcing of auto components from Lokesh Machines in the wake of the supplier figuring in the United States Department of the Treasury’s OFAC sanctions list. “We have received communication from one of our customers regarding discontinuance of transactions owing to the fact that while there are ongoing efforts towards delisting from United States Department of the Treasury’s OFAC sanctions list, the timeline for this process is not suitable for the customer,” machine tools and small arms maker Lokesh Machines said on Saturday. The move of M&M is expected to impact around 8% of total revenue, compared with the previous financial year. The company is, however, determined to add other customers to compensate for the loss of business resulting from the development and remains optimistic about achieving this goal particularly given its recent defence foray, the Hyderabad-based firm said in a filing. Machine tools and auto components and defence divisions are two business segments of the company. As part of the auto components business, it manufactures cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, connecting rods and forgings. The company operates through five manufacturing units in Hyderabad and 1 in Pune. Following the October 30 sanctions list, in which its name figured with a clutch of other entities from India, Lokesh Machines said it was in the process of reaching out to the OFAC, after becoming aware through media reports, to gather more information and provide clarifications, including that it has been exporting machines to Russia since 2011. “Our machines are being sourced by distributors who stock these or further sell. None of our distributors are featured on any sanctions list. The news articles stated we have been sanctioned for supplying Russia with technology and equipment that could be used for military operations. It must be noted that we are not aware of any machines being used or dealt with any sanctioned entities or individuals,” the company had said in a filing. In India, Lokesh Machines is the first private firm to manufacture and supply small arms to elite forces like the Indian Army, NSG, Assam Rifles, and BSF. Keir Starmer pledges 13,000 more neighbourhood police officersMumbai: The Congress is furious with its ally, the Shiv Sena (UBT), since the latter's MLC Milind Narvekar has openly applauded the demolition of Babri masjid. In a post on the social media X (formerly Tweet) Narvekar, who is also a long-term personal assistant to his party chief Uddhav Thackeray, quoted the late Bal Thackeray as stating that he is proud of those who demolished the masjid. For good measure Narvekar included a picture of the demolition and also photos of himself, Uddhav Thackeray and Aaditya Thackeray. The post was to mark the 32nd anniversary of the demolition which was followed by massive communal riots in Mumbai and other parts of the country. The post has exposed a major faultline in the MVA. It won't be surprising if the Congress decides to pull out of the MVA. pic.twitter.com/3nZYC4EK0e Senior MLA of the Congress Amin Patel told the FPJ n Saturday that the X post was not in keeping with the coalition dharma and was most unacceptable. He said the matter will be taken up at the highest level of the Congress. Senior Congress leader and former minister Arif Naseem Khan said it was shocking that Narvekar was openly applauding those who carried out the demolition. "Uddhav Thackeray should immediately clarify whether he agreed the post. I will escalate the matter with my party leadership. The Shiv Sena (UBT) cannot be a part of the MVA and yet adopt the line of the BJP." Spokesperson of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Atul Londe said "our alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT) was based on a common minimum programme aimed at ousting the BJP and defending the Constitution. We do not believe in the politics of religion." However, it is learnt that the Congress leadership is under pressure from the rank and file to snap ties with the Shiv Sena (UBT). Their fear is that the party will not get votes of Muslims in the elections to the BMC which may be declared any day now and this will adversely affect its poll prospects. According to sources, Narvekar, who is the Man Friday of Uddhav Thackeray, would not have done the controversial X post without the concurrence of his boss. The post appears to be a part of the party's efforts to reclaim the Hindutva agenda which was heavily compromised because of its alliance with the Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar). The Shiv Sena (UBT) benefited in a big way during the Lok Sabha elections when Muslims supported it and other MVA allies. However, this fact was highlighted by the BJP during the assembly election campaign. The BJP accused the Shiv Sena (UBT) of appeasing the Muslim bank a la the Congress. BJP-inspired social media was very active in the run up to the assembly elections in portraying the Shiv Sena (UBT) as another version of the Congress which has often been accused of pandering to Muslim interests in the name of secularism. BJP supporters pointed out that Uddhav even felt shy of calling his father Bal Thackeray "Hindu Hriaday Samrat" lest he lose Muslim votes. The BJP also highlighted the fact that when the Wakf Amendment Bill was introduced in Parliament Shiv Sena (UBT) members were conspicuous by their absence. The Shiv Sena (UBT) is afraid that if the narrative about the party being pro-Muslim is continued then it will have to pay a heavy price in the BMC elections. With an obvious effort to counter that narrative it appears to have asked Narvekar to go ahead with the controversial post. "Narvekar wont dare do anything without the endorsement of Uddhav. So his X post appears to have been done with the full knowledge of Uddhav," a Sena source observed. Despite the raging controversy neither Uddhav nor Aaditya, who is the second most important leader in the party have distanced themselves from Narvekar's controversial post.THE FBI whistleblower who helped crush a global drug cartel has angrily told Hollywood superstar Mark Wahlberg to set the record straight and rectify a new documentary about his astonishing story. High-stakes gambler RJ Cipriani , known as "Jackpot," found himself entangled in the dark underworld of Owen Hanson — a former USC football walk-on turned drug kingpin who ran a massive illegal sports betting and money laundering empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Cipriani told The U.S. Sun earlier this year that, following Hanson's release from prison, he was ready to meet him again - this time in a boxing ring rather than a casino to help raise money for the "broke" former crime boss. Hanson has just released a book entitled The California Kid, which details his astonishing rise and fall. However, Cipriani is seething with the contents, which he says omits key elements of the tale, while leaving his name linked to Hanson's money laundering network. Wahlberg 's Unrealistic Ideas production company has used Hanson's work to produce a warts-and-all documentary due early next year. READ MORE EXCLUSIVES Cipriani, 63, said he will use "every legal remedy at my disposal to clear my good name" and stressed he would have no problem taking Wahlberg , his organization and Amazon "to the cleaners". "I wouldn't buy the book no matter what, but friends have sent me excerpts that, once I read them, are defamatory and slanderous toward my involvement with Owen Hanson," a raging Cipriani told The U.S. Sun. " Wahlberg and Unrealistic Ideas are now put on notice..... If the docuseries paints me in any way as being knowingly complicit with Owen Hanson and his crimes, then do so at your own legal peril." The Philadelphia-born high-stakes gambler is fuming with the Departed star and has been ignored by the actor and his team despite numerous attempts to contact him. Most read in The US Sun "If I was a violent person, which I'm not, I would bitch slap him," Cipriani continued. "I want my name cleared now." In 2017, Hanson was sentenced to 21 years and ordered to forfeit $5 million in assets. These included $100,000 in gold coins, luxury cars, high-end jewelry, vacation properties, a sailboat, and shares in several businesses. Authorities also seized six encrypted cell phones linked to a Canadian company under investigation for allegedly providing secure technology to organized crime groups. Hanson’s downfall began with his arrest at a San Diego golf course in September 2015. Months after the FBI arrested him for arranging sales of cocaine and methamphetamine , Hanson was federally indicted as the leader of a crime ring called O-Dog Enterprises . Officials accused the former football player of using his connections in the sports world to build a multimillion-dollar criminal empire consisting of drug trafficking, money laundering, and sports betting. I go after bad guys no matter who they are, where they are, or how dangerous, rich or connected they are. By Hanson's sentencing in 2017, authorities had made over 1,000 arrests connected to the case, with 800 occurring in a single day. A key figure in Hanson’s capture was Cipriani, who called himself "Robin Hood 702," a nod to his habit of donating substantial gambling winnings to charity (702 being the Las Vegas area code). Cipriani became pivotal in exposing Hanson, triggering multiple international investigations and arrests. Since their first meeting in Sydney, Australia , in 2011, Hanson claimed the two had an arrangement where he would give Cipriani his drug money to gamble, trusting he'd win and return the funds while keeping the rest for his Robin Hood mission. Cipriani, however, vehemently denied the claims. In August 2015, Hanson enlisted Cipriani in a $2.5 million money-laundering scheme, instructing him to gamble the funds. Instead, Cipriani deliberately lost the money at Sydney's Star Casino while playing blackjack. Furious at the betrayal, Hanson escalated his threats, even going so far as to send photos of masked men vandalizing Cipriani’s mother’s grave in Philadelphia. The disturbing images were the final straw for Cipriani. He tipped off the FBI and Hanson's downward spiral began. OUT OF PRISON After serving nearly seven years in federal prison in Colorado, Hanson was released early into California transitional housing in March. Upon his release, Cipriani offered to pay for a one-bedroom apartment in Irvine, California, for Hanson while he got back on his feet. "I said to him, 'If you've reformed yourself and you're going talk to kids about how harmful drugs are, and you've changed your life, then I'll help you,'" Cipriani told The U.S. Sun earlier this year. "I always hope for the good in people. And I'm hoping that he's changed. But if he walks off the straight line, guess who will be there." Big-hearted Cipriani wanted to help Hanson - but this latest betrayal has reignited explosive tension between the pair. FEUD REIGNITED Wahlberg initially approached the now LA-based high-stakes gambler about appearing in the Amazon series but turned him down because they wouldn't give him an EP credit or fee. He is working on a Sony Pictures Television production instead. "Pray it up, Marky Mark!" snapped Cipriani, cheekily nodding to Wahlberg's religious social media posts. He continued, "Mark understand this, I go after bad guys no matter who they are, where they are, or how dangerous, rich or connected they are. Read More on The US Sun "I'm the real life super hero that you always pretend to be in your dumb, fake ass movies. Remember, I'm Jackpot, govern yourselves accordingly." The U.S. Sun contacted Wahlberg and his production company but didn't hear back.

That was the case when a container ship slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing it to collapse and crumple around the vessel, killing construction workers on the bridge. As flames torched the landscape in California , another image captured firefighters and sheriff’s deputies pushing a vintage car away from a burning home. Elsewhere in California , one photo is aglow with bright orange flames, broken up only by the subtle features of an animal running through them. But hope also persevered in the face of devastation. In Helene’s aftermath , an image from Crystal River, Florida, shows Dustin Holmes holding hands with his girlfriend, Hailey Morgan, as they sloshed through floodwaters with her 4- and 7-year-old children to return to their flooded home. And in Manasota Key, Florida, a family was lit up by the glow of flashlights as they walked to check on their home damaged by Milton. Other photos from 2024 also grabbed the darkness and shadows to emphasize light: among them, a rocket liftoff and a total solar eclipse . And, yes, eclipse glasses were back in style for a shared moment of skygazing. But many other photos delivered a blast of color, from the spectrum of the northern lights across a Maine sky to a crew of workers wading into the deep-red of a Massachusetts cranberry bog . And, once again, Taylor Swift captured the country’s attention, even as a part of the crowd. She rushed down from the stands to kiss her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, after the Chiefs won the AFC Championship , en route to another Super Bowl win.None
