IRVING, Texas (AP) — The NFL will consider expanding replay assist to include facemask penalties and other plays. Officials have missed several obvious facemask penalties this season, including two in a three-week span during Thursday night games. “When we see it, because I see it like yourselves and the fans, I have an opportunity to see it from a different angle and see it from a slow-mo,” NFL executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday at the league’s winter meetings. “When you think about the position of where the officials are, things are happening so fast. Sometimes the facemask can be the same color as the gloves. There’s a lot happening. Concerning? Yes, because that’s a big miss. That’s a big foul. That’s why we would like to consider putting that for the membership to consider putting that foul category that we can see, putting that (penalty flag) on the field to help. There is a frustration, and we believe that is one category we can potentially get right." Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was grabbed by his facemask and brought down in the end zone to end Minnesota’s comeback attempt against the Rams on Oct. 24. But there was no call. On Oct. 3, officials missed a facemask on Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving while he ran for 7 yards late in the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay instead was called for holding on the play, got forced out of field-goal range and Kirk Cousins rallied the Falcons to an overtime victory. “That is one this year, the facemask seems like it was the obvious one” Vincent said. “That keeps showing up.” Vincent also cited hits on a defenseless player, tripping, the fair catch, an illegal batted ball, an illegal double-team block, illegal formations on kickoffs and taunting as other areas that warrant consideration for replay assist. Current rules only allow replay assist to help officials pick up a flag incorrectly thrown on the field, or in assisting proper enforcement of a foul called on the field. The NFL’s Competition Committee will review potential recommendations for owners to vote on for expanding replay assist. Vincent was emphatic about the league’s desire to eliminate low blocks that could lead to serious injuries. “The low block below the knee needs to be removed from the game,” Vincent said. “You look at high school, you look at college, too. Every block should be above the knee, but below the neck. All the work that we’ve done for the head and neck area, all the things that we’ve taken out of the game, this is the right time for us to remove the low block out of the game. Be consistent with high school. Be consistent with college. Every block should be above the knee and below the neck.” The league will consider changes to the onside kick after dramatically overhauling the kickoff rule on a one-year basis. “We need to look at that. That’s a dead play,” Vincent said of the onside kick’s low success rate. “That is a ceremonial play. Very low recovery rate. When we look at the kickoff and maybe where the touchback area should be during the offseason, we need to revisit the onside kick.” Options include giving the team an opportunity to run one play to gain a certain number of yards to keep possession. The Washington Commanders’ search for a new stadium site includes options in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and work has escalated on one in particular. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and controlling owner Josh Harris met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill last week about the RFK Stadium site in Washington, which requires a bill getting through Congress to transfer the land to the District government before anything else can happen. “I think there’s a bipartisan support for this,” Goodell said, adding he’d like to see it get to a vote soon. “We hope that it will be addressed and approved so that it’s at least an alternative for the Commanders if we go forward. The world of milk has changed drastically in the last few years. Talking about milk once boiled down to two things -– whether or not you drink it and what percentage of fat you prefer if you do. Now, that are likely to taste quite different from one another while also having unique nutritional impacts on your body. In this sea of dairy products comes organic milk. While many see the term as a one-size-fits-all definition, knowing what organic milk is and what it isn't is very important to consumers paying more for what they believe is a healthier alternative to standard milk. Organic milk is essentially milk that is gathered by grass-fed cows who haven't been tampered with via hormones or antibiotics which can affect the animal's physical growth and milk production. The Las Vegas Raiders are riding a nine-game losing streak and are tied for the NFL ’s worst record at 2-11. When he was asked at the NFL league meetings Wednesday about head coach Antonio Pierce, Davis declined to commit to bringing him back in 2025. Advertisement “I’m very disappointed, obviously. I want to see progress,” Davis said. “There’s no excuses. We have injuries and all of those things, but your team has to figure out how to get around those issues. The bottom line ... is it comes down to me. And, if there’s going to be a finger pointed, it should be at me because, again, I’m the one who’s hiring the people who make the decisions on the field. “There’s a misconception that I’m making a lot of decisions on the football field, but I continue to tell y’all that I don’t. I delegate to the people who I hire. I give them goals. And then I get out of the way and let them try to do it and let the results speak for themselves. At this point, obviously, we’re not happy, but you have to go through the season and then we’ll re-evaluate. On Oct. 15, he cut Pierce some slack for being “young as a head coach” and said, “We’ll be OK.” Almost two months later, Davis didn’t give Pierce a huge vote of confidence. He did, however, express that he’s been pleased that the team’s effort hasn’t waned as the losses have piled up. “The one thing that this team has done is they’ve fought hard,” Davis said. “In every game, they’re fighting hard. That’s something that you don’t find all the time when things aren’t as good as you want them to be. While they were both hired this offseason, Pierce had a nine-game stint as interim head coach in 2023. This is Telesco’s first year on the job, but Pierce has a 22-game sample size. “They didn’t come in as a team,” Davis said. “They are individuals.” Telesco’s first free agency class didn’t pan out well. Defensive tackle Christian Wilkins was the headliner but played just five games before suffering a Jones fracture, and quarterback Gardner Minshew II was terrible in 10 games before suffering a season-ending broken collarbone. But Telesco did put together a strong 2024 draft class. It has already produced four starters: star tight end Brock Bowers , center Jackson Powers-Johnson , right tackle DJ Glaze and cornerback Decamerion Richardson . And although his 11-year tenure as Los Angeles Chargers GM had its ups and downs, he still has a more proven track record than Pierce. Davis won’t make any in-season changes to the front office or coaching staff, but this offseason is shaping up to be an eventful one for the Raiders. On Wednesday, he gained several new partners to help him navigate it as the NFL owners voted to approve the Raiders’ sale of 15 percent of the franchise to Silver Lake co-CEO and Endeavor board chairman Egon Durban and Discovery Land Company founder and chairman Michael Meldman, who each acquired a 7.5 percent stake. The transaction marks the second time this year that Davis has sold a chunk of the Raiders equity. In October, he sold about 10.5 percent of the franchise to former NFL quarterback Tom Brady , co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management Tom Wagner and former NFL defensive lineman Richard Seymour. Brady and Wagner purchased stakes worth about 5 percent each, while Seymour purchased a 0.5 percent stake. Brady is expected to help the football operations department , but his role will be somewhat limited by his duties as a Fox television analyst. Davis said they communicate often, but “there’s not a day-to-day role or anything that’s been defined” for Brady. “When Tom was hired (as an analyst), I promised to Fox that we would not get in the way of Tom’s job and that he’s going to be one of the best announcers in the game,” Davis said. “Anything he does with the Raiders will be in the future, as far as that goes. Obviously, I talk to him all of the time and his input is greatly valued and will always be valued. We’ll see as time goes on how his role evolves.” Davis said he expects to benefit from Brady’s competitiveness and experience. But it sounds like the plan isn’t for Brady to have a formal role until his contract with Fox expires following the 2033 season. “I want Tom to have a huge voice — no question about it,” Davis said. “It’s part of building the infrastructure of the organization ... a football person on that side of it that’s not a coach or a general manager. He’s somebody who can oversee the whole picture. And Davis has already stated that Brady will help with the team’s pursuit of a long-term answer at quarterback. The Raiders are currently slotted to get the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, so they could be in position to land one this offseason. “You’re always looking for a quarterback,” Davis said. “There’s no question about it.” Minshew will likely be released this offseason, and Aidan O’Connell likely hasn’t shown enough to be the starting quarterback. Despite that, Davis said he hasn’t issued any mandate for a quarterback to be drafted in the first round. “You’d have to talk to Tom Telesco,” Davis said. “And, of course, Tom Brady at some point will have something to say on that.” It stood out that Davis mentioned Telesco and Brady, but not Pierce. Davis ultimately will decide who the Raiders’ coach and general manager are in 2025, but he intends to largely delegate the football responsibilities from there. “I always have input,” Davis said. “I play devil’s advocate because I just want people to think about it from all different angles, but I let them make the decision. ... At times, I’m really happy about it, and there’s times when I’m not, but I think it’s the best way for me to go about doing the business.
