The Indian automotive industry is poised to achieve its ambitious target of up to ₹25,000 crore (about $3 billion) reduction in import value in the five years through this fiscal-year end by accelerating localisation of advanced parts such as electric motors, airbags and automatic transmissions, said industry executives. As per the plan, several projects were initiated to cut parts imports and boost localisation by up to 20% from FY20 levels across 11 critical categories including drive transmissions, engines, steering, electronics and electrical parts. These components comprise about 70% of total imports. Auto and parts makers achieved net localisation or gains of localisation efforts minus incremental imports due to increase in volumes of ₹7,018 crore in the two years through FY22, as per an assessment on localisation programmes conducted by industry bodies SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) and ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association). The industry is working on realising net localisation of an additional ₹17,977 crore in the three years to FY25. A reassessment of the localisation targets achieved by the domestic automotive industry will be undertaken after March-end, following which fresh targets will be set in consultations between the industry and government to further strengthen local manufacturing of automobiles and auto parts, the executives said. "Value-addition from the Indian auto components industry has gone up significantly in the last couple of years. In the first phase (till FY22), we achieved double the target of attaining localisation level at about 6%," said Shradha Suri Marwah, president, Acma. "The second phase is underway. The industry is targeting deepening localisation by another 15%". Google has announced that it is rolling out a new generative AI experiment, “Whisk.” This innovative tool allows users to create images using other photos as prompts, rather than relying on traditional text descriptions. How Whisk works According to a company blog, Whisk simplifies the image generation process by letting users drag and drop images to define the subject, scene and style of their desired creation. “Whisk lets you input images for the subject, one for the scene and another image for the style. Then, you can remix them to create something uniquely your own, from a digital plushie to an enamel pin or sticker,” the company added. The underlying Gemini AI model then analyses these images, extracts key characteristics and generates a detailed text description. This description is then fed into Google's Imagen 3 image generation model, which then creates a final image. This approach allows for unique and creative remixing of visual elements, enabling users to generate novel images that capture the essence of their input, rather than simply replicating them. “This process captures your subject's essence, not an exact replica. That way, you can easily remix your subjects, scenes and styles in novel ways,” the company added. Refine the final image While Whisk's ability to extract key characteristics offers creative flexibility, it can also lead to unexpected results. The generated images may differ from user expectations in terms of details like height, weight, hairstyle, or skin tone. To address this, Whisk allows users to view and edit the underlying text prompts, providing greater control over the final output. “In our early testing with artists and creatives, people have been describing Whisk as a new type of creative tool — not a traditional image editor. We built it for rapid visual exploration, not pixel-perfect edits. It’s about exploring ideas in new and creative ways, allowing you to work through dozens of options and download the ones you love,” Google added. Whisk is currently available for users in the US to experiment with at labs.google/whisk.Harris: Fine Gael ‘will gain seats’ amid further fragmentation of Irish politicsStrictly Come Dancing fans were left furious during the semi-final when they believed that Shirley Ballas was unfairly dishing out compliments and over-marking Pete Wicks . The ex-TOWIE star has made it through to the penultimate week without ever being in the dance-off - despite those considered superior dancers to him being eliminated along the way. In fact, just minutes into the show, fans were already venting their dismay on social media believing he didn't deserve to be there alongside fellow semi-finalists Chris McCausland, Tasha Ghouri , JB Gill and Sarah Hadland. And their frustrations escalated following Pete's first performance when head judge Shirley lavished him with praise even dubbing him 'Mr Strictly'. Shirley told Pete that she judged him on how he'd progressed during the competition rather than against anyone else. She said: "You are Mr Strictly Come Dancing . You are what this show is about. Everybody at home, all the parents, will be sitting there and thinking, 'if Pete can do it, I can do it' and you will inspire people to go to the dance studio. "You had no experience whatsoever coming in. I thought you did a very good job on your footwork and your neckline.... week one you were like this and today you were shining. You didn't make any mistakes, you did a grand job. You should walk with your head high - you are absolutely Mr Strictly Come Dancing." She went on to award him the highest mark of all the judges - nine out of 10 - giving him a total of 32 out of 40. But fans took exception to Shirley's lavish praise and rushed to social media platform X to call out her 'bias'. One said: "SHIRLEY CALLING PETE MR STRICTLY COME DANCING LIKE MONTELL DIDNT ALSO START FROM NOTHING BUT NEVER GOT THAT PRAISE. The bias is RIDICULOUS." A second said: "Sh*rley can retire after calling pete mr strictly come dancing after criticising tasha for coming out of lifts, it’s completely unfair to treat contestants so differently. Pete is not the first or last person to start at nothing NOT EVEN IN THIS SERIES." Another commented: "shirley calling pete “mr strictly come dancing” when he shouldn’t even be in the semi finals in the first place..." And: "Shirley acting like Pete is God’s gift to dancing and giving him a bloody 9." A fifth said: "Shirley giving that a 9?? I’ve defended her all series but scoring that the same as JB and Sarah? Please..." The semi-final followed last weekend's surprise dance-off which saw Olympian Montell Douglas and Tasha Ghouri in the bottom two with Montell eliminated after the judges' votes. Canada should support the peaceful resolution of Taiwan’s destiny according to the will of Taiwanese, Canadian lawmakers said in a resolution marking the second anniversary of that nation’s Indo-Pacific strategy on Monday. The Canadian House of Commons committee on Canada-Chinese relations made the comment as part of 34 recommendations for the new edition of the strategy, adding that Ottawa should back Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, first published in October 2022, emphasized that the region’s security, trade, human rights, democracy and environmental protection would play a crucial role in shaping Canada’s future. 請繼續往下閱讀... The strategy called for Canada to deepen its ties with Taiwan and other regional partners sharing democratic values, and oppose any unilateral attempt to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Ottawa should improve Taiwan’s resilience, trade ties and cooperation between the two nations’ peoples by strengthening bilateral collaboration in economics, technology, supply chains, public health, democratic governance and countering disinformation, it said. The Canadian House of Commons Special Committee on the Canada-People’s Republic of China Relationship — whose members include lawmakers from across the political divide — was created in December 2019 to review all aspects governing the two nations’ relations. Ottawa’s China policy represents substantial differences from Beijing’s “one China principle,” the special committee said in a report entitled “Canada and Taiwan: A Strong Relationship in Turbulent Times.” The Canadian Indo-Pacific Strategy should govern the nation’s relationship with Taiwan, it added. Representative to Canada Harry Tseng (曾厚仁) hailed the report as the most important development in bilateral relations since Ottawa switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China. The special committee’s report last year already included a series of recommendations to improve collaboration on issues concerning diplomacy, security, trade, technology and affairs affecting indigenous people. The previous report underscored the instability in the cross-strait security situation and the importance of enhancing Taiwan-Canada relations to counter China’s growing threat toward Taiwan. Meanwhile, a statement issued after a meeting between the British foreign secretary and defence secretary and the Australian foreign minister and defence minister on Monday reiterated support for Taiwan’s international participation and opposition to unilateral change in the Taiwan Strait. “Ministers underscored the critical importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. They emphasised that differences should be resolved peacefully and not through the threat or use of force or coercion; and reaffirmed their shared opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo,” it said. “They recognised that the international community benefits from the expertise of the people of Taiwan and committed to working together to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations, as a member where statehood is not a prerequisite or as an observer or guest where it is.” In Taipei, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “applauds and welcomes” the UK’s and Australia’s support for Taiwan, adding that they share Taiwan’s belief in the universal values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, and that they are a force for peace in the Indo-Pacific region. Taiwan is an indispensable member of the international community and would continue to cooperate closely with like-minded nations to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, participate in international organizations, defend the rules-based international order and contribute to peace and stability in the region, it said. Working with representatives from Dumas Contracting Ltd., the Garden Shaft in the Money Pit area will extend the refurbished 82-foot deep, mid-18th century structure down some twenty feet deeper underground. It is there, where they hope to breach a mysterious tunnel discovered one year ago that runs almost directly beneath the shaft and into an area known as “The Baby Blob” where high trace evidence of gold, silver and other metals was previously detected through cutting edge water testing. Meanwhile, the Lagina’s Fellowship will proceed with a strategic core drilling program across the area in search of other valuable targets that Dumas can potentially help them reach by constructing new underground tunnels. On Lot 5, located on the western side of the island, working with archaeologist Laird Niven and his associates, the team will continue investigating the entire area, including two mysterious stone features that may date back more than a century prior to the discovery of the Money Pit in 1795. Last year, it was on this newly acquired property that metal detection expert Gary Drayton unearthed not only an ancient Roman coin but also a lead barter token, which may be connected to the 14th century lead cross that was discovered back in 2017 at Smith’s Cove. Meanwhile, in the swamp, the team reconstitutes their investigations of numerous man-made structures, some of which, have been dated back as much as eight centuries. As stunning discoveries continue to be unearthed during all of these endeavors on Oak Island, the team’s research will lead to the most monumental journey overseas yet to multiple European and North American destinations that will offer new, shocking evidence that the medieval order of the Knights Templar may very well be connected to the world’s longest running treasure hunt. About the series According to History Channel’s official synopsis, “Oak Island is a tree-covered island on the south shore of Nova Scotia that has intrigued treasure hunters for more than 200 years. It is believed that the island is hiding one of the greatest treasures of all time, but no one has been able to find it. The two use modern technology and good old American know-how to look for the treasure. The Greens may not actually lose all their seats; there are hopes that they might cling on to one. Either way, it’s the end of the party as a serious player in Irish politics for now. At a time when the effects of climate change are increasingly visible around the world, the party most associated with climate action has been decimated by Irish voters. The Greens knew that this was a possibility when they negotiated a programme for government with muscular climate measures and got stuck into several ministries, often doing unpopular things. After all, it happened to them before. But it’s still a pretty cruel blow. Politics is a tough business. Sinn Féin’s performatively ecstatic celebrations may well be genuine – after all, the party has staged a dramatic recovery after disastrous local and European elections in May and several months of internal scandal and controversy. If you offered them 19 per cent of the vote at the start of the campaign they would probably have taken your hand off for it. Mary Lou McDonald had a barnstorming campaign. But it couldn’t hide strategic and structural problems and the fact is the party has lost a significant share of its vote since the last election, when it worn 24.5 per cent. And last year, the party was polling in the mid-30s and considered a shoo-in for government. Now it is facing another five years in opposition. The count is continuing in Dublin Central where Gerard “the Monk” Hutch, a gangland criminal though one with deep roots in his community, is edging towards a seat. It’s hard to know what to think about that. Except that it probably says a few things that do not reflect well on successive governments, the city authorities, the gardaí – and some of the voters of Dublin Central. There is a massive generational divide in Irish politics. On party choice, preferred government, attitude to issues and perception of politicians, younger people are deeply sceptical about the established parties and are seeking an alternative – in some cases, any alternative. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will return to power backed largely by older voters and opposed by younger voters. The housing issue isn’t the only thing going on here, but it is at the heart of it. Unless the next government makes significant progress on addressing the housing crisis, and finds homes for younger voters, it’s hard to see them turning around the antipathy of younger voters. NEW YORK (AP) — The leaders of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign insist they simply didn't have enough time to execute a winning strategy against Donald Trump , pointing to “ferocious" political headwinds that were ultimately too much to overcome in the 107-day period after President Joe Biden stepped aside . Harris' leadership team, speaking on the “Pod Save America” podcast that aired on Tuesday, defended strategic decisions over the campaign's closing days, some of which have faced scrutiny in the weeks since Trump's decisive victory . Specifically, they defended Harris' outreach to Republican voters, her unwillingness to distance herself from Biden, her silence on Trump's attacks on her transgender policies and her inability to schedule an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan. “In a 107-day race, it is very difficult to do all the things you would normally do in a year and a half, two years,” said Harris campaign senior adviser Jen O'Malley Dillon. David Plouffe, another senior adviser, added, “There was a price to be paid for the short campaign." The pointed reflections on Harris' loss came just before she declared she was “proud of the campaign we ran” during a conference call with supporters as the party begins a painful process of self-examination. Trump won every swing state and made gains among key voting groups traditionally aligned with Democrats — young voters and voters of color, among them. Backed by the resounding win, the Republican president-elect is claiming a mandate to enact his populist agenda as he prepares to return to the White House on Jan. 20. Harris acknowledged her defeat during the conference call, but praised the political organization her team built that featured more than 408,000 volunteers who knocked on nearly 20 million doors and made over 219 million phone calls. “What we did in 107 days was unprecedented,” she said, noting that her campaign also raised more than $1.4 billion, which marks a record for U.S. presidential campaigns. Still, Harris' campaign finished the election in debt . And none of the Harris advisers acknowledged any mistakes during the wide-ranging podcast interview hosted by former Democratic operatives. Instead, they indicated that Harris had few options given the compressed timeframe and the broad anti-incumbent headwinds that have challenged elected officials across the world. They also gave Trump's team some credit. They specifically pointed to Trump's closing attack ad, which highlighted Harris' support for taxpayer-funded sex reassignment surgeries for transgender prisoners. “Obviously, it was a very effective ad at the end,” said Harris deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks. “I think that it made her seem out of touch.” The campaign tested several potential response ads but, in the end, decided it was best to avoid a specific rebuttal. “There’s no easy answers to this,” O'Malley Dillon said. Plouffe said he thought the Trump attack ad against “Bidenomics” was even more effective, but he acknowledged that the transgender attacks were not helpful. “She was on tape," he said. "Surgery for trans people who want to transition in prison was part of the Biden-Harris platform in 2020. It was part of what the administration did, right?” And while the campaign has faced lingering questions about its media strategy, Harris' team said she actually wanted to participate in a podcast with Rogan, who is among the world's most popular podcasters and ultimately endorsed Trump. Stephanie Cutter, another Harris senior adviser, said the campaign wasn't able to “find a date” to make it work. “We had discussions with Joe Rogan’s team. They were great. They wanted us to come on. We wanted to come on,” she said. “Will she do it sometime in the future? Maybe. Who knows. But it didn’t ultimately impact the outcome one way or the other.” Plouffe noted that the campaign offered to do the Rogan podcast on the road in Austin, Texas. Trump ultimately did his interview with Rogan in the podcaster's studio. Harris' campaign brass also defended her decision to court moderate Republicans in the campaign's closing days. The decision has drawn ire from some progressives, who believe Harris should have worked harder to turn out more traditional Democratic voters. “This political environment sucked, OK? We were dealing with ferocious headwinds,” Plouffe said. “So we had a complicated puzzle to put together here in terms of the voters.” He acknowledged some “drift” toward Trump among non-college-educated voters, particularly voters of color, which made Harris' outreach to moderate voters even more important. “Yes, of course, you have to maximize your turnout and your vote share amongst liberal voters if you’re a Democrat. That was a huge focus,” he said. He added, “You’ve got to couple that with dominating in the middle. Not just winning it a little. We have to dominate the moderate vote." Speaking on Tuesday's conference call, Harris' running mate Tim Walz described the election result as “incredibly disappointing” and “a bit scary." But he praised the campaign's effort. “There will be a day of reckoning when it will be asked, ‘What did you do during the 2024 campaign?’ Well, I know the people on this call can say, everything they possibly could,” Walz said. “And for that, as an American, I’m incredibly grateful.” ___ Steve Peoples, The Associated PressIntech Investment Management LLC Makes New Investment in Kadant Inc. The New York Rangers have had a change of fortune, as today they faced off against the Montreal Canadiens. The Blueshirts would secure the victory, with a score of 4-3. The Rangers would have nine players who'd score a point or more against a rebuilding Habs squad. One those who added a point were Mika Zibanejad, who scored a goal as a new resident on the third line, centering Chris Kreider and Kaapo Kakko. Will Cuylle continued his point streak, adding another assist to his bucket. Of course, there'd be a fight between Captain Jacob Trouba and winger Josh Anderson, which would see the Captain fail to perform in a way that'd inspire a team. But he showed up! Peter Laviolette was interviewed at a post-game conference in Madison Square Garden. He felt positive about the team's play today. With this victory, the Rangers improve to a slightly better 13-9-1 this season, but is it a sign of play to come? There's no guarantee the team is fully out of their slump until they can put some wins together, against tougher opponents. Once they can take down teams like the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes, and contenders like the Edmonton Oilers, it's fair to say they're back. For now, it sounds as if Peter Laviolette is exercising optimism cautiously, and that is an honest approach compared to giving a fluff answer. It's good to see players like Will Cuylle be rewarded for his play as he's earned a spot on the top line. Let's see how long of a fixture he is in the top-six as an up-and-coming forward in the system. It's a good thing that Zibanejad has finally found the back of the net again, but can continue to be a reliable contributor once again? Rwanda's annual honey production reached 7,000 tonnes at the end of 2023/2024 fiscal year. The government targets 10,000 tonnes by 2029. ALSO READ: Beekeepers weigh in on how to boost honey production Allocating state forests to beekeeping projects is one of the strategies to boost honey production. Ibanda-Makera is a 169-hectare natural gallery forest in Kirehe District in Eastern Province, which has savanna trees, swamps, and large trees watered by the Makera stream. Sanza is a relict forest located in Ngororero District in Western Province. Until its restoration, the forest was among three natural ecosystems, that had been classified as “collapsed,” the two others being Ndoha forest and Mashyuza forest. ALSO READ: How charcoal production and hunting threatened Kibirizi-Muyira Natural Forest The rehabilitation of Sanza and Ibanda-Makera forests exemplifies how ecosystem restoration can uplift communities according to Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA). These forests were restored by REMA through the Building Resilience of Communities Living in Degraded Forests, Savannahs, and Wetlands project using an ecosystem-based adaptation approach. In addition to supporting beekeeping, the project addressed climate change challenges, particularly in the drought-prone Eastern Province. The restoration of Sanza and Ibanda-Makera forests has led to improved biodiversity, soil conservation, and water regulation. These ecosystem services not only support [the sources of] livelihoods like beekeeping but also play a crucial role in mitigating climate change impacts, REMA said in a statement. ALSO READ: Beekeepers weigh in on how to boost honey production Beekeepers with beehives in the Sanza and Ibanda-Makera forests were upbeat after these ecosystems were restored, with revitalized vegetation, and ideal conditions for bees to forage. The beekeepers said honey production has begun to increase, providing them with a more reliable source of income. “With more flowers and a better habitat for our bees, honey production has increased significantly, said Jean Baptiste Ngirinshuti, the president of Itezimbere Muvumvu Cooperative operating Sanza Forest. Ngirinshuti said the cooperative used to harvest 10-15kg per beehive and the yield has increased to 30kg per hive. “The forest benefits us by providing a place for our bees to gather nectar and pollen. When the forest was being cut down, our bees had nowhere to forage, and the yields were very small. But now, with the forest protected, our bees have a good yield and security, which we find very beneficial,” said Gorette Bahirumwe, a member of the cooperative. For Marina Babonampoze, who has 10 beehives in Ibanda-Makera forest, beekeeping is becoming more professional as incomes increase, attracting women like her in the activity. Beekeeping was traditionally considered a male activity, but the income it generates today has encouraged more women to participate more actively, Babonampoze said. The REMA project supported beekeepers with training in modern beekeeping methods and provided modern beehives, enabling them to increase production. The flourishing beekeeping activities highlight the direct link between healthy ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods. The government had targeted to reach more than 8,600 tonnes of annual honey production by June 2024, but challenges disrupted some of the efforts taken in that regard, according to officials. Solange Uwituze, the Deputy Director-General in charge of animal resources research and technology transfer at Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), said that achieving the previous target was challenging due to issues such as habitat loss caused by urbanization and monoculture, which limited the foraging options for bees. Uwituze said efforts to restore bee habitats were underway, with different projects targeting biodiversity conservation to create pollinator-friendly environments. She said that under the five-year Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation, which runs until 2029, the government aims to address the current challenges in order to meet the targeted 10,000 tonnes in honey production.", "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Michel Nkurunziza" }, "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "The New Times", "url": "https://www.newtimes.co.rw/", "sameAs": ["https://www.facebook.com/TheNewTimesRwanda/","https://twitter.com/NewTimesRwanda","https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuZbZj6DF9zWXpdZVceDZkg"], "logo": { "@type": "ImageObject", "url": "/theme_newtimes/images/logo.png", "width": 270, "height": 57 } }, "copyrightHolder": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "The New Times", "url": "https://www.newtimes.co.rw/" } }

The Indian automotive industry is poised to achieve its ambitious target of up to ₹25,000 crore (about $3 billion) reduction in import value in the five years through this fiscal-year end by accelerating localisation of advanced parts such as electric motors, airbags and automatic transmissions, said industry executives. As per the plan, several projects were initiated to cut parts imports and boost localisation by up to 20% from FY20 levels across 11 critical categories including drive transmissions, engines, steering, electronics and electrical parts. These components comprise about 70% of total imports. Auto and parts makers achieved net localisation or gains of localisation efforts minus incremental imports due to increase in volumes of ₹7,018 crore in the two years through FY22, as per an assessment on localisation programmes conducted by industry bodies SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) and ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association). The industry is working on realising net localisation of an additional ₹17,977 crore in the three years to FY25. A reassessment of the localisation targets achieved by the domestic automotive industry will be undertaken after March-end, following which fresh targets will be set in consultations between the industry and government to further strengthen local manufacturing of automobiles and auto parts, the executives said. "Value-addition from the Indian auto components industry has gone up significantly in the last couple of years. In the first phase (till FY22), we achieved double the target of attaining localisation level at about 6%," said Shradha Suri Marwah, president, Acma. "The second phase is underway. The industry is targeting deepening localisation by another 15%". Google has announced that it is rolling out a new generative AI experiment, “Whisk.” This innovative tool allows users to create images using other photos as prompts, rather than relying on traditional text descriptions. How Whisk works According to a company blog, Whisk simplifies the image generation process by letting users drag and drop images to define the subject, scene and style of their desired creation. “Whisk lets you input images for the subject, one for the scene and another image for the style. Then, you can remix them to create something uniquely your own, from a digital plushie to an enamel pin or sticker,” the company added. The underlying Gemini AI model then analyses these images, extracts key characteristics and generates a detailed text description. This description is then fed into Google's Imagen 3 image generation model, which then creates a final image. This approach allows for unique and creative remixing of visual elements, enabling users to generate novel images that capture the essence of their input, rather than simply replicating them. “This process captures your subject's essence, not an exact replica. That way, you can easily remix your subjects, scenes and styles in novel ways,” the company added. Refine the final image While Whisk's ability to extract key characteristics offers creative flexibility, it can also lead to unexpected results. The generated images may differ from user expectations in terms of details like height, weight, hairstyle, or skin tone. To address this, Whisk allows users to view and edit the underlying text prompts, providing greater control over the final output. “In our early testing with artists and creatives, people have been describing Whisk as a new type of creative tool — not a traditional image editor. We built it for rapid visual exploration, not pixel-perfect edits. It’s about exploring ideas in new and creative ways, allowing you to work through dozens of options and download the ones you love,” Google added. Whisk is currently available for users in the US to experiment with at labs.google/whisk.Harris: Fine Gael ‘will gain seats’ amid further fragmentation of Irish politicsStrictly Come Dancing fans were left furious during the semi-final when they believed that Shirley Ballas was unfairly dishing out compliments and over-marking Pete Wicks . Shirley told Pete that she judged him on how he'd progressed during the competition rather than against anyone else. She said: "You are Mr Strictly Come Dancing . You are what this show is about. Everybody at home, all the parents, will be sitting there and thinking, 'if Pete can do it, I can do it' and you will inspire people to go to the dance studio. "You had no experience whatsoever coming in. I thought you did a very good job on your footwork and your neckline.... week one you were like this and today you were shining. You didn't make any mistakes, you did a grand job. You should walk with your head high - you are absolutely Mr Strictly Come Dancing." She went on to award him the highest mark of all the judges - nine out of 10 - giving him a total of 32 out of 40. But fans took exception to Shirley's lavish praise and rushed to social media platform X to call out her 'bias'. One said: "SHIRLEY CALLING PETE MR STRICTLY COME DANCING LIKE MONTELL DIDNT ALSO START FROM NOTHING BUT NEVER GOT THAT PRAISE. The bias is RIDICULOUS." A second said: "Sh*rley can retire after calling pete mr strictly come dancing after criticising tasha for coming out of lifts, it’s completely unfair to treat contestants so differently. Pete is not the first or last person to start at nothing NOT EVEN IN THIS SERIES." Another commented: "shirley calling pete “mr strictly come dancing” when he shouldn’t even be in the semi finals in the first place..." And: "Shirley acting like Pete is God’s gift to dancing and giving him a bloody 9." A fifth said: "Shirley giving that a 9?? I’ve defended her all series but scoring that the same as JB and Sarah? Please..." The semi-final followed last weekend's surprise dance-off which saw Olympian Montell Douglas and Tasha Ghouri in the bottom two with Montell eliminated after the judges' votes. Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer

Canada should support the peaceful resolution of Taiwan’s destiny according to the will of Taiwanese, Canadian lawmakers said in a resolution marking the second anniversary of that nation’s Indo-Pacific strategy on Monday. The Canadian House of Commons committee on Canada-Chinese relations made the comment as part of 34 recommendations for the new edition of the strategy, adding that Ottawa should back Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, first published in October 2022, emphasized that the region’s security, trade, human rights, democracy and environmental protection would play a crucial role in shaping Canada’s future. 請繼續往下閱讀... The strategy called for Canada to deepen its ties with Taiwan and other regional partners sharing democratic values, and oppose any unilateral attempt to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Ottawa should improve Taiwan’s resilience, trade ties and cooperation between the two nations’ peoples by strengthening bilateral collaboration in economics, technology, supply chains, public health, democratic governance and countering disinformation, it said. The Canadian House of Commons Special Committee on the Canada-People’s Republic of China Relationship — whose members include lawmakers from across the political divide — was created in December 2019 to review all aspects governing the two nations’ relations. Ottawa’s China policy represents substantial differences from Beijing’s “one China principle,” the special committee said in a report entitled “Canada and Taiwan: A Strong Relationship in Turbulent Times.” The Canadian Indo-Pacific Strategy should govern the nation’s relationship with Taiwan, it added. Representative to Canada Harry Tseng (曾厚仁) hailed the report as the most important development in bilateral relations since Ottawa switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China. The special committee’s report last year already included a series of recommendations to improve collaboration on issues concerning diplomacy, security, trade, technology and affairs affecting indigenous people. The previous report underscored the instability in the cross-strait security situation and the importance of enhancing Taiwan-Canada relations to counter China’s growing threat toward Taiwan. Meanwhile, a statement issued after a meeting between the British foreign secretary and defence secretary and the Australian foreign minister and defence minister on Monday reiterated support for Taiwan’s international participation and opposition to unilateral change in the Taiwan Strait. “Ministers underscored the critical importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. They emphasised that differences should be resolved peacefully and not through the threat or use of force or coercion; and reaffirmed their shared opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo,” it said. “They recognised that the international community benefits from the expertise of the people of Taiwan and committed to working together to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations, as a member where statehood is not a prerequisite or as an observer or guest where it is.” In Taipei, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “applauds and welcomes” the UK’s and Australia’s support for Taiwan, adding that they share Taiwan’s belief in the universal values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, and that they are a force for peace in the Indo-Pacific region. Taiwan is an indispensable member of the international community and would continue to cooperate closely with like-minded nations to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, participate in international organizations, defend the rules-based international order and contribute to peace and stability in the region, it said. Working with representatives from Dumas Contracting Ltd., the Garden Shaft in the Money Pit area will extend the refurbished 82-foot deep, mid-18th century structure down some twenty feet deeper underground. It is there, where they hope to breach a mysterious tunnel discovered one year ago that runs almost directly beneath the shaft and into an area known as “The Baby Blob” where high trace evidence of gold, silver and other metals was previously detected through cutting edge water testing. Meanwhile, the Lagina’s Fellowship will proceed with a strategic core drilling program across the area in search of other valuable targets that Dumas can potentially help them reach by constructing new underground tunnels. On Lot 5, located on the western side of the island, working with archaeologist Laird Niven and his associates, the team will continue investigating the entire area, including two mysterious stone features that may date back more than a century prior to the discovery of the Money Pit in 1795. Last year, it was on this newly acquired property that metal detection expert Gary Drayton unearthed not only an ancient Roman coin but also a lead barter token, which may be connected to the 14th century lead cross that was discovered back in 2017 at Smith’s Cove. Meanwhile, in the swamp, the team reconstitutes their investigations of numerous man-made structures, some of which, have been dated back as much as eight centuries. As stunning discoveries continue to be unearthed during all of these endeavors on Oak Island, the team’s research will lead to the most monumental journey overseas yet to multiple European and North American destinations that will offer new, shocking evidence that the medieval order of the Knights Templar may very well be connected to the world’s longest running treasure hunt. The two use modern technology and good old American know-how to look for the treasure. The Greens may not actually lose all their seats; there are hopes that they might cling on to one. Either way, it’s the end of the party as a serious player in Irish politics for now. At a time when the effects of climate change are increasingly visible around the world, the party most associated with climate action has been decimated by Irish voters. The Greens knew that this was a possibility when they negotiated a programme for government with muscular climate measures and got stuck into several ministries, often doing unpopular things. After all, it happened to them before. But it’s still a pretty cruel blow. Politics is a tough business. Sinn Féin’s performatively ecstatic celebrations may well be genuine – after all, the party has staged a dramatic recovery after disastrous local and European elections in May and several months of internal scandal and controversy. If you offered them 19 per cent of the vote at the start of the campaign they would probably have taken your hand off for it. Mary Lou McDonald had a barnstorming campaign. But it couldn’t hide strategic and structural problems and the fact is the party has lost a significant share of its vote since the last election, when it worn 24.5 per cent. And last year, the party was polling in the mid-30s and considered a shoo-in for government. Now it is facing another five years in opposition. The count is continuing in Dublin Central where Gerard “the Monk” Hutch, a gangland criminal though one with deep roots in his community, is edging towards a seat. It’s hard to know what to think about that. Except that it probably says a few things that do not reflect well on successive governments, the city authorities, the gardaí – and some of the voters of Dublin Central. There is a massive generational divide in Irish politics. On party choice, preferred government, attitude to issues and perception of politicians, younger people are deeply sceptical about the established parties and are seeking an alternative – in some cases, any alternative. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will return to power backed largely by older voters and opposed by younger voters. The housing issue isn’t the only thing going on here, but it is at the heart of it. Unless the next government makes significant progress on addressing the housing crisis, and finds homes for younger voters, it’s hard to see them turning around the antipathy of younger voters. NEW YORK (AP) — The leaders of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign insist they simply didn't have enough time to execute a winning strategy against Donald Trump , pointing to “ferocious" political headwinds that were ultimately too much to overcome in the 107-day period after President Joe Biden stepped aside . Harris' leadership team, speaking on the “Pod Save America” podcast that aired on Tuesday, defended strategic decisions over the campaign's closing days, some of which have faced scrutiny in the weeks since Trump's decisive victory . Specifically, they defended Harris' outreach to Republican voters, her unwillingness to distance herself from Biden, her silence on Trump's attacks on her transgender policies and her inability to schedule an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan. “In a 107-day race, it is very difficult to do all the things you would normally do in a year and a half, two years,” said Harris campaign senior adviser Jen O'Malley Dillon. David Plouffe, another senior adviser, added, “There was a price to be paid for the short campaign." The pointed reflections on Harris' loss came just before she declared she was “proud of the campaign we ran” during a conference call with supporters as the party begins a painful process of self-examination. Trump won every swing state and made gains among key voting groups traditionally aligned with Democrats — young voters and voters of color, among them. Backed by the resounding win, the Republican president-elect is claiming a mandate to enact his populist agenda as he prepares to return to the White House on Jan. 20. Harris acknowledged her defeat during the conference call, but praised the political organization her team built that featured more than 408,000 volunteers who knocked on nearly 20 million doors and made over 219 million phone calls. “What we did in 107 days was unprecedented,” she said, noting that her campaign also raised more than $1.4 billion, which marks a record for U.S. presidential campaigns. Still, Harris' campaign finished the election in debt . And none of the Harris advisers acknowledged any mistakes during the wide-ranging podcast interview hosted by former Democratic operatives. Instead, they indicated that Harris had few options given the compressed timeframe and the broad anti-incumbent headwinds that have challenged elected officials across the world. They also gave Trump's team some credit. They specifically pointed to Trump's closing attack ad, which highlighted Harris' support for taxpayer-funded sex reassignment surgeries for transgender prisoners. “Obviously, it was a very effective ad at the end,” said Harris deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks. “I think that it made her seem out of touch.” The campaign tested several potential response ads but, in the end, decided it was best to avoid a specific rebuttal. “There’s no easy answers to this,” O'Malley Dillon said. Plouffe said he thought the Trump attack ad against “Bidenomics” was even more effective, but he acknowledged that the transgender attacks were not helpful. “She was on tape," he said. "Surgery for trans people who want to transition in prison was part of the Biden-Harris platform in 2020. It was part of what the administration did, right?” And while the campaign has faced lingering questions about its media strategy, Harris' team said she actually wanted to participate in a podcast with Rogan, who is among the world's most popular podcasters and ultimately endorsed Trump. Stephanie Cutter, another Harris senior adviser, said the campaign wasn't able to “find a date” to make it work. “We had discussions with Joe Rogan’s team. They were great. They wanted us to come on. We wanted to come on,” she said. “Will she do it sometime in the future? Maybe. Who knows. But it didn’t ultimately impact the outcome one way or the other.” Plouffe noted that the campaign offered to do the Rogan podcast on the road in Austin, Texas. Trump ultimately did his interview with Rogan in the podcaster's studio. Harris' campaign brass also defended her decision to court moderate Republicans in the campaign's closing days. The decision has drawn ire from some progressives, who believe Harris should have worked harder to turn out more traditional Democratic voters. “This political environment sucked, OK? We were dealing with ferocious headwinds,” Plouffe said. “So we had a complicated puzzle to put together here in terms of the voters.” He acknowledged some “drift” toward Trump among non-college-educated voters, particularly voters of color, which made Harris' outreach to moderate voters even more important. “Yes, of course, you have to maximize your turnout and your vote share amongst liberal voters if you’re a Democrat. That was a huge focus,” he said. He added, “You’ve got to couple that with dominating in the middle. Not just winning it a little. We have to dominate the moderate vote." Speaking on Tuesday's conference call, Harris' running mate Tim Walz described the election result as “incredibly disappointing” and “a bit scary." But he praised the campaign's effort. “There will be a day of reckoning when it will be asked, ‘What did you do during the 2024 campaign?’ Well, I know the people on this call can say, everything they possibly could,” Walz said. “And for that, as an American, I’m incredibly grateful.” ___ Steve Peoples, The Associated PressIntech Investment Management LLC Makes New Investment in Kadant Inc. The New York Rangers have had a change of fortune, as today they faced off against the Montreal Canadiens. The Blueshirts would secure the victory, with a score of 4-3. The Rangers would have nine players who'd score a point or more against a rebuilding Habs squad. One those who added a point were Mika Zibanejad, who scored a goal as a new resident on the third line, centering Chris Kreider and Kaapo Kakko. Will Cuylle continued his point streak, adding another assist to his bucket. Of course, there'd be a fight between Captain Jacob Trouba and winger Josh Anderson, which would see the Captain fail to perform in a way that'd inspire a team. But he showed up! Peter Laviolette was interviewed at a post-game conference in Madison Square Garden. He felt positive about the team's play today. With this victory, the Rangers improve to a slightly better 13-9-1 this season, but is it a sign of play to come? There's no guarantee the team is fully out of their slump until they can put some wins together, against tougher opponents. Once they can take down teams like the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes, and contenders like the Edmonton Oilers, it's fair to say they're back. For now, it sounds as if Peter Laviolette is exercising optimism cautiously, and that is an honest approach compared to giving a fluff answer. It's good to see players like Will Cuylle be rewarded for his play as he's earned a spot on the top line. Let's see how long of a fixture he is in the top-six as an up-and-coming forward in the system. It's a good thing that Zibanejad has finally found the back of the net again, but can continue to be a reliable contributor once again? Rwanda's annual honey production reached 7,000 tonnes at the end of 2023/2024 fiscal year. The government targets 10,000 tonnes by 2029. ALSO READ: Beekeepers weigh in on how to boost honey production Allocating state forests to beekeeping projects is one of the strategies to boost honey production. Ibanda-Makera is a 169-hectare natural gallery forest in Kirehe District in Eastern Province, which has savanna trees, swamps, and large trees watered by the Makera stream. Sanza is a relict forest located in Ngororero District in Western Province. Until its restoration, the forest was among three natural ecosystems, that had been classified as “collapsed,” the two others being Ndoha forest and Mashyuza forest. ALSO READ: How charcoal production and hunting threatened Kibirizi-Muyira Natural Forest The rehabilitation of Sanza and Ibanda-Makera forests exemplifies how ecosystem restoration can uplift communities according to Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA). These forests were restored by REMA through the Building Resilience of Communities Living in Degraded Forests, Savannahs, and Wetlands project using an ecosystem-based adaptation approach. In addition to supporting beekeeping, the project addressed climate change challenges, particularly in the drought-prone Eastern Province. The restoration of Sanza and Ibanda-Makera forests has led to improved biodiversity, soil conservation, and water regulation. These ecosystem services not only support [the sources of] livelihoods like beekeeping but also play a crucial role in mitigating climate change impacts, REMA said in a statement. ALSO READ: Beekeepers weigh in on how to boost honey production Beekeepers with beehives in the Sanza and Ibanda-Makera forests were upbeat after these ecosystems were restored, with revitalized vegetation, and ideal conditions for bees to forage. The beekeepers said honey production has begun to increase, providing them with a more reliable source of income. “With more flowers and a better habitat for our bees, honey production has increased significantly, said Jean Baptiste Ngirinshuti, the president of Itezimbere Muvumvu Cooperative operating Sanza Forest. Ngirinshuti said the cooperative used to harvest 10-15kg per beehive and the yield has increased to 30kg per hive. “The forest benefits us by providing a place for our bees to gather nectar and pollen. When the forest was being cut down, our bees had nowhere to forage, and the yields were very small. But now, with the forest protected, our bees have a good yield and security, which we find very beneficial,” said Gorette Bahirumwe, a member of the cooperative. For Marina Babonampoze, who has 10 beehives in Ibanda-Makera forest, beekeeping is becoming more professional as incomes increase, attracting women like her in the activity. Beekeeping was traditionally considered a male activity, but the income it generates today has encouraged more women to participate more actively, Babonampoze said. The REMA project supported beekeepers with training in modern beekeeping methods and provided modern beehives, enabling them to increase production. The flourishing beekeeping activities highlight the direct link between healthy ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods. The government had targeted to reach more than 8,600 tonnes of annual honey production by June 2024, but challenges disrupted some of the efforts taken in that regard, according to officials. Solange Uwituze, the Deputy Director-General in charge of animal resources research and technology transfer at Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), said that achieving the previous target was challenging due to issues such as habitat loss caused by urbanization and monoculture, which limited the foraging options for bees. Uwituze said efforts to restore bee habitats were underway, with different projects targeting biodiversity conservation to create pollinator-friendly environments. She said that under the five-year Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation, which runs until 2029, the government aims to address the current challenges in order to meet the targeted 10,000 tonnes in honey production.", "author": { "@type": "Person", "name": "Michel Nkurunziza" }, "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "The New Times", "url": "https://www.newtimes.co.rw/", "sameAs": ["https://www.facebook.com/TheNewTimesRwanda/","https://twitter.com/NewTimesRwanda","https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuZbZj6DF9zWXpdZVceDZkg"], "logo": { "@type": "ImageObject", "url": "/theme_newtimes/images/logo.png", "width": 270, "height": 57 } }, "copyrightHolder": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "The New Times", "url": "https://www.newtimes.co.rw/" } }
