The RSM Classic ScoresMourinho best summed up how quickly a footballer’s career can come and go – Amorim may now have that chat with RashfordAP 12:16 JST, December 30, 2024 When LeBron James broke another NBA record earlier this month, the one for most regular-season minutes played in a career, his Los Angeles Lakers teammates handled the moment in typical locker room fashion. They made fun of him. “They told me I’m old as hell,” James quipped. By NBA standards, they’re not wrong. He was dubbed “The Kid from Akron” when the Ohio native entered the league with a limitless future nearly 22 years ago. He’s now the 40-year-old from Los Angeles with wisps of gray in his beard. His milestone birthday comes Monday, one that will make him the first player in NBA history to play in his teens, 20s, 30s and 40s. Such a feat has happened a couple of dozen times in baseball before. It has happened in hockey — Gordie Howe was a five-decade player, appearing in the NHL from his teens to his 50s — but never in the NFL or the NBA. Until now. James is making more basketball history and creating a club all of his own. “In some ways he’s a freak of nature,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “I’ve been around a lot of great players and he’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve been around. I mean, he doesn’t take a day off. He seems to not take an afternoon off. He’s always working on some part of his body. You meet with him and he’s always soaking something or eating something with some contraption attached to him.” A 40th birthday, in NBA terms, means the on-court end is near. James will become the 30th player to appear in a regular-season game with a “4” as the first digit of his age; only nine logged more than 51 games after that birthday. He’ll be the 32nd player to play after turning 40 overall; Tim Duncan and Danny Schayes both turned 40 during playoff runs in what became their final seasons. And for the most part, big numbers are largely nonexistent at that age. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (who did it three times), John Stockton (twice), Michael Jordan, Robert Parish and Karl Malone have averaged more than 10 points in a season after turning 40. Jordan averaged 22.4 points in 30 games after turning 40 in his final season with Washington; Malone is the most recent to do it, averaging 13.2 points in 42 games after turning 40 while with the Lakers in 2003-04. James, meanwhile, is still putting up All-Star level numbers: 23.5 points, 9 assists and 7.5 rebounds per game. Forget how doing that at 40 is unheard of. Doing that at 30 is practically unheard of. The only players to have those numbers in all three categories in a season after turning 30 are James (who did it at 33 and 35) and James Harden (who did it at 31). “The size, the strength and the IQ ... with his frame and the way he takes care of himself, he doesn’t have to be the best athlete on the planet. At one time he was,” Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We’re not talking about the best athlete in the association. He was the best athlete on the planet arguably, just size, strength, agility, explosiveness combined. But at this size and if he just wants to slow the game down and just play off his brain and IQ, he could do that for another decade. I doubt he’ll find interest in that. But he could.” Nobody knows when James will stop playing. And it surely isn’t going to get any easier: James wanted to play all 82 games this season and couldn’t, was widely criticized when the Lakers went through a slump earlier this season and took tons of backlash when his team drafted his son Bronny in the second round last summer in what many thought was simple nepotism. He has always been a lightning rod. If his play declines at 40, his naysayers will be lined up to revel in that. “It’s a lot harder, physically and emotionally, to face what those guys face night after night after night,” Golden State coach Steve Kerr said of top NBA stars getting up in years, like James and the Warriors’ Stephen Curry — who’ll turn 37 in March. “There’s a reason players have to retire. You know, they can’t do it forever.” James won’t either. But even while playing alongside elite 30-year-olds like Giannis Antetokounmpo, James — who reportedly spends more than $1.5 million annually on his fitness and has an on-site mechanic of sorts at all times for anything his body needs in personal athletic training guru in Mike Mancias — has shown how to play long past what used to be considered an NBA player’s peak years. “What he’s done is incredible, never been done, especially at the level he’s playing,” Antetokounmpo said. “For me, I always look at the other players that kind of set the blueprint for us, and this is something that’s never been done before. I definitely want to play late into my career, like 37, 38, 39, as much as my body can allow me to play. But I have to do a good job of taking care of my body, which I believe I do, but he kind of set the path for us, set the blueprint for us. We’ve just got to follow.” The accolades are countless: James is the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, has a place in the GOAT conversation, most minutes played, four NBA championships, three Olympic gold medals, 20 and likely soon to be 21 All-Star selections, oldest to do this, oldest to do that, generational wealth with a net worth exceeding $1 billion, and on and on and on. It begs the question: What does one get a 40-year-old who has everything? “I don’t even know,” lamented Bronny James — another example of how James is one of one, becoming the first dad in NBA history to have his son as a teammate. James has hinted that the end is near. “Don’t make me feel old right now,” he said, only half-kiddingly, when asked earlier this month about the looming 40th birthday. He is under contract for next season but hasn’t offered any guarantees about how long he will play, saying he isn’t “going to play that much longer, to be completely honest” and insisting that he won’t be “playing till the wheels fall off” because he doesn’t want to disrespect the game. No player scored more points in his teens than James did. Same goes for his 20s. Only Malone and Abdul-Jabbar scored more points in their 30s than James. And now, here comes his 40s, with James still going strong. It’s the final decade of a basketball career like none other. “Fans pay attention every time he steps on the court because they’re watching one of the greatest ever and still playing an incredibly high level, despite turning 40 this month,” Silver said. “I marvel at him.”

As ski resorts across the Pacific Northwest begin to open, anticipation is growing for what experts predict could be an unforgettable season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a 60% chance of La Niña conditions, leading skiers and snowboarders to gear up for a winter filled with fresh powder, stunning views, and epic runs. In the 2023-2024 season, the National Ski Areas Association reported that 60.4 million people hit the slopes nationwide, but only 16.5 million chose the Pacific Northwest. However, that number may rise this season as renowned resorts like Mount Baker, Crystal Mountain, and Stevens Pass prepare for what could be one of their snowiest winters. Here's what you need to know to take full advantage of this potentially record-breaking ski season in the PNW. I've skied at more than 20 resorts across the United States, from the East Coast to the West Coast. I can attest that skiing in the Pacific Northwest offers an entirely different experience, primarily due to heavy snowfall and the Pacific Northwest's distinct type of snow. According to AccuWeather's Senior Meteorologist Brian Wimer , "Ski resorts on the West Coast, such as in Washington, Oregon, and California, have much more moisture available in comparison to interior Western states like Utah and Colorado." Coastal states experience more frequent snowstorms than ski areas in other parts of the United States. For example, Mount Baker in Washington is famous for being the world's snowiest ski resort , largely due to its prime location close to the coast. Another result of the Pacific Northwest’s location is the snow’s water content, which influences its texture. Areas closer to the ocean tend to have snow with higher water content, while this decreases as you move inland. As water content lowers, snow becomes drier and more powdery, much like the conditions found in the Rockies. While you'll enjoy plenty of powder days in the Pacific Northwest, the snow won't feel quite the same as Colorado's. You can still carve through fresh snow, but it tends to be heavier and wetter, making many PNW skiers opt for thicker skis. One of the great things about the Pacific Northwest is how long the winter season lasts. From November to May, there's plenty of time to enjoy the slopes. As someone who loves skiing here, I can confidently say there's no wrong time to visit. However, I recommend coming between January and April, as the mountains receive the most snowfall during this period. The base layers have time to build up, ensuring most runs are open and ready for action. My favorite time to ski in the Pacific Northwest is early spring. While many skiers and snowboarders race to get the first tracks after a fresh snowstorm or overnight grooming, spring skiing in the PNW offers a special experience. The best time to enjoy spring skiing is in the afternoon, so most people don't hit the slopes until lunchtime. You still get the occasional snowstorm, but the warmer temperatures make it unique. There's something about skiing in lighter layers, with many opting for just a t-shirt, that makes it feel like a whole new adventure. Experts at the NOAA expect above-average precipitation across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho in early winter, leading to favorable snow conditions at their ski resorts. The Pacific Northwest offers various ski resorts , from charming local mountains to world-famous destinations. With La Niña's predicted snowfall this winter, several spots are worth considering for your trip. My personal favorite in Oregon is Mount Bachelor. Over in Washington, you can't go wrong with Summit at Snoqualmie, Mission Ridge, or Crystal Mountain. And while Idaho might not always be the first place you think of for skiing, the state has some incredible resorts, including Schweitzer and Sun Valley. To fully enjoy this ski season, I highly recommend planning ahead and booking your trip to one of the top resorts in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. In addition, keeping up with weather apps and following resort social media accounts is essential for tracking snowstorms and staying informed. While chasing storms may not be feasible for everyone, it remains one of the best ways to guarantee optimal conditions. If you're anticipating a significant storm and can take time off, seizing that opportunity to hit the slopes could make for an unforgettable ski experience. The Pacific Northwest offers something extraordinary with its heavy snowfall, breathtaking views, and diverse range of resorts. While many skiers and snowboarders anxiously monitor weather forecasts and resort updates, planning early is always smart. By booking your lift tickets, flights, and accommodations at the start of the season, you'll avoid price hikes and set yourself up for an incredible winter adventure in the Pacific Northwest. Thousands upon thousands of veterans’ headstones across the United States will have wreaths placed on them on December 14 to honor them and to keep their sacrifices fresh in the minds of all who see. “For me, to see the American people — what they can do when they all come together — there’s so much volunteerism here and love of our military, and there’s also a great understanding. Our mission is to remember the fallen, and honor of those that serve, and teach the next generation the cost and value of freedom. And the ‘teach’ piece, to me, is what really hits home. It’s grown into an amazing thing,” Wreaths Across America Executive Director Karen Worcester said on Friday in an appearance on Breitbart News Daily . The tribute is one that has occurred annually for roughly 30 years, starting quietly with the Worcester family and their business, Worcester Wreath, in 1992. Worcester Wreath had extra wreaths at the end of the holiday season that year and ended up partnering with a trucking company and volunteers to decorate graves at Arlington National Cemetery with 5,000 wreaths. LISTEN: “A volunteer trucker friend helped us load them up, and we went down. It impacted my kids, who went with my husband, so much. It was such a personal experience,” Worcester recalled, describing how they laid wreathes on the graves as they paid tribute to the veterans by reading their names aloud. “These are people — these aren’t just row after row of stones,” she added. “And we literally did that up until 2005, so that’s a good stretch. A Pentagon photographer actually took a picture and put it on their website and it went viral. And by January of 2006, we were just inundated. So in 2006, we donated the wreaths, but the amount of attention was crazy.” The sudden boom and thousands of requests across the nation ultimately led to the creation of Wreaths Across America in 2007, a nonprofit with the mission: “Remember. Honor. Teach.” The organization has gone on to have thousands of participating locations across the United States who have laid hundreds of thousands of wreaths on the graves of our nation’s heroes. “[Wreaths Across America] literally was founded on the suggestion of veterans, Gold Star families, people who were telling us, ‘Please, we need to do this,'” she said. “...This year, we have 4,908 locations all over the country. We even do some overseas... We are looking for about 4 million people to come out and place wreathes on Dec. 14. It’s unbelievable.” Wreaths Across America will start its annual “ Escort to Arlington ” on Saturday, Dec. 7 , and will travel down the east coast before arriving at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 14 for National Wreaths Across America Day. On that day, ceremonies honoring those who served will take place at nearly 5,000 locations nationwide. The organization is still taking sponsors and volunteers . “It’s very humbling. Because I, as a mother of six and a grandmother of nine, I now have Gold Star moms who are my dear, dear friends who are my age, some younger, whose children are buried in these cemeteries. It’s a responsibility now,” she said. “One of the most important things we do is tell the stories of those men and women who served, and tell what made them step up, and to teach our children what’s so wonderful about freedom that, should they be the next generation called, that they value freedom enough to step up,” she continued. The Minister for Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has outlined a new strategy focused on advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and enhancing the overall quality of learning in the country. The Minister stated this in Abuja on Tuesday while declaring open the stakeholders’ consultative dialogue on the Education Sector Renewal Initiative (ESRI) 2024-2027. The meeting had in attendance representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the World Bank Group, and the European Union (EU), amongst others. Alausa said his strategic goals include reducing the number of out-of-school children, addressing learning poverty, and enhancing skills development and human capital for the labour market. He also emphasised the integration of out-of-school children (OOSC) and Almajiris into formal education, alongside initiatives such as conditional cash transfers, school feeding programme, and Social and Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) for the education of girls and vulnerable populations. Alausa also stressed the importance of strengthened governance and management in the education sector, which involves organisational reforms of relevant institutions, enhanced oversight of programmes and subnational implementation, improved planning, resource allocation, tracking, research, and monitoring. Additionally, the Minister announced plans to build a robust data architecture and strengthen the Education Management Information System (EMIS) to improve decision-making and accountability across the sector. “As we all know, the education sector is filled with numerous challenges. As we are aware, infrastructural decay, funding issues, unreliable data intake, cutting, planning, poor capacity, development for teachers, problem of out-of-school, we have one of the highest number of out-of-school children in the nation, in the country. “As a ministry, we are committed to providing quality education to all Nigerians as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the land as beautiful, which ensures inclusive, equitable, and quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all,” he said In her welcome address, Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, the Minister of State for Education, acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector, including infrastructural issues, inadequate funding, poor teacher development, and the out-of-school children crisis. She emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to providing quality education in line with global standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that achieving this required collaboration with development partners, stakeholders, and the private sector.POWW Deadline: Rosen Law Firm Urges AMMO, Inc. across various industries, supporting over 8,000 positions that will offer participants an average wage of $32 per hour. The funding, announced by Governor Gavin Newsom , will be distributed among 65 apprenticeship programs spanning healthcare, transportation, education, advanced manufacturing, information technology, and public sector jobs. “We’re taking a bottom-up approach to making sure Californians get the skills they need to get good-paying jobs in every region of the state,” said Governor Newsom, highlighting the program’s potential impact on family wages. This second round of the Apprenticeship Innovation Funding (AIF) program aims to create earn-and-learn pathways meeting current workforce demands. The initiative is part of California’s larger goal to serve 500,000 apprentices by 2029, with 190,915 already participating, maintaining the state’s position as the nation’s leader in registered apprenticeships. Related Story: According to Katie Hagen, DIR Director, “This investment reflects California’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that our labor sectors have access to a steady pipeline of skilled talent, while also opening doors for many Californians to train for high-demand careers and earn a paycheck.” The announcement follows the unveiling of the California Jobs First Economic Blueprint, which will guide state investments over the next decade. A leading economist from the University of Ghana, Patrick Asuming, has warned that the country’s economic challenges demand more than just election promises, urging political parties to present concrete, long-term solutions. Speaking in an interview with Berla Mundi on Ghana Decides on TV3, Asuming expressed concern over the disconnect between political manifestos and the realities of the Ghanaian economy. While both major political parties emphasize job creation, he argued that their proposed solutions fail to address the root cause of the nation’s economic struggles. Asuming highlighted that although there is a significant focus on youth training, the critical issue remains: the economy is not generating enough jobs to accommodate the growing number of skilled workers. “The economy itself is not generating enough jobs,” he stated, underscoring the mismatch between political promises and the economic landscape. The renowned economist pointed to a disconnect between macroeconomic indicators, which may show positive growth, and the lived experiences of ordinary Ghanaians. “When you speak to Ghanaians, you see that there’s a disconnect between what the growth numbers are telling us and what people are feeling,” he explained. This gap, according to Asuming, is partly due to the dominance of foreign-controlled sectors like mining and quarrying, which limit the participation of Ghanaian workers. Additionally, Asuming expressed concern about the informal sector, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are grappling with issues such as currency instability and rising costs. Asuming criticized the manifestos for focusing on youth unemployment without adequately addressing the structural issues that prevent young people from benefiting from economic growth. He specifically addressed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) proposed 24-hour economy policy, acknowledging that while it could foster a more attractive business environment, its long-term effectiveness remains uncertain. “The 24-hour economy could create a better environment for businesses, but we need to assess how it will be implemented,” Asuming explained. He expressed cautious optimism, noting that its success would depend on stabilizing the macroeconomic environment and ensuring that any incentives offered would benefit ordinary Ghanaians. He also raised concerns about the cost of such incentives and their potential impact on taxpayers. “Any incentive offered to businesses must be carefully considered to ensure it benefits the average Ghanaian,” he added. Asuming concluded that for the policy to have a meaningful impact, more detailed and actionable plans are needed, and the underlying economic challenges must be addressed. As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, the real question remains whether these political promises will result in tangible changes for the nation’s youth and broader economic landscape.
Kurtenbach: Do the 49ers have any pride? We’re about to find outPro Picks is a weekly column where AP Pro Football Writer Rob Maaddi shares his picks for upcoming games. For all previous Pro Picks, head here . Week 13 features only three games between two teams with winning records. All three matchups are on Sunday. Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry face off when the streaking Philadelphia Eagles (9-2) take on the Baltimore Ravens (8-4) in a potential Super Bowl preview. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,392 yards rushing and Henry is next at 1,325. The Los Angeles Chargers (7-4) visit the Atlanta Falcons (6-5) in a matchup between first-year coaches who’ve turned their teams around. Two surprise teams meet when the Minnesota Vikings (9-2) host the Arizona Cardinals (6-5). It’s a full schedule with no byes, beginning with three games on Thanksgiving and another on Black Friday. Five road teams are favorites, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Pro Picks aims for another winning week. Line: Cowboys minus 3 1/2 The Giants are a total mess. General manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll are barely hanging onto their jobs. Drew Lock could become the third starting QB in three games. Standout rookie receiver Malik Nabers called his team “soft” after they played like a group that’s quit last week. The Cowboys aren’t much better, though they fought hard in an upset win at Washington. Cooper Rush had his best game filling in for Dak Prescott. A soft schedule has Dallas thinking the playoffs aren’t out of reach. The Cowboys can’t overlook New York. They’re 0-6 in their past six home games but have won seven straight matchups vs. the Giants. BEST BET: COWBOYS: 26-17 Line: Rams minus 2 1/2 The Saints are 2-0 under interim coach Darren Rizzi and are coming off a bye with a chance to keep their playoff hopes alive. An offense that was unstoppable in the first two games this season is getting back on track thanks to an improved run game and back-to-back sharp outings from Derek Carr. Alvin Kamara should be excited to get the ball against the Rams, who just gave up 255 yards rushing to Saquon Barkley. Los Angeles needs to protect Matthew Stafford better and give him time to get the ball to Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp. UPSET SPECIAL: SAINTS: 24-23 Line: Lions minus 9 1/2 The Lions have lost seven straight games on Thanksgiving, including three times to the Bears. It would be a major upset if that happens again. Detroit has won nine straight games since losing to Tampa Bay in Week 2. The Lions are not only winning but dominating opponents with six victories by a double-digit margin during their streak. Jared Goff leads a prolific offense while the defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown the past two games. The Bears are trying to snap a five-game losing streak. Caleb Williams hasn’t thrown a pick in 193 passes. Detroit is 15-3 against the spread in its past 18 division games and 8-1 ATS in the past nine games overall this season. LIONS: 31-19 Line: Packers minus 3 1/2 Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending concussion the previous time the Dolphins faced Green Bay on Christmas Day in 2022. He has 11 TDs and only one interception in the five games since returning from his latest concussion and has led Miami to three straight wins. The Packers face a tough test in the middle of a stretch where they play three games in a 12-day span with a showdown against the Lions looming next Thursday. Jordan Love has bounced back from two rough games to play two solid ones. He’ll face a strong challenge against Miami’s top-10 defense. PACKERS: 23-21 Line: Chiefs minus 13 The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs keep finding ways to win barely. They’ve won 12 straight games decided by seven points or fewer, the longest streak in NFL history, and have won five games decided on the final play this season. Patrick Mahomes is the difference-maker in many of the close ones. Kansas City could use a rout. The struggling Raiders provide an opportunity for a lopsided victory. Las Vegas has lost seven straight and lost quarterback Gardner Minshew last week. The team will turn to Aidan O’Connell back off injured reserve to start on Black Friday. The Chiefs are due for an easy one, but they’re 0-5 ATS in the past five games. CHIEFS: 27-16 Line: Chargers minus 2 The Chargers hit the road on a short week after losing the “Harbowl” at home to the Ravens. Their offense could be without running back J.K. Dobbins and the defense has allowed 57 points in the past two games after giving up just 13.6 per game the previous five. Meanwhile, the rested Falcons are coming off a bye and eager to snap a two-game losing streak to maintain their hold on first place in the NFC South. FALCONS: 23-22 Line: Bengals minus 3 The AFC North-leading Steelers are road underdogs following a road loss at Cleveland. Russell Wilson has been hitting his deep throws but needs better protection. A usually stingy defense that couldn’t make stops against Jameis Winston in the snow now has to contain Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. The underachieving Bengals need to stack wins to have any shot at climbing back into the playoff race. Cincinnati is 1-3 ATS as a home favorite this season. BENGALS: 24-23 Line: Vikings minus 3 1/2 Stout defense and solid play by QB Sam Darnold has helped Minnesota become the surprise team in the NFL this season. Only the Lions and Chiefs have a better record. The Cardinals are in a four-way battle in the NFC West. A disappointing offensive performance led to their four-game winning streak being snapped. It won’t be easy for Kyler Murray and Co. to score against the Vikings. VIKINGS: 23-17 Line: Colts minus 2 1/2 It’s no longer Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning in this rivalry. Anthony Richardson and Drake Maye go head-to-head in a matchup between young QBs taken in the top five of the draft over the past two seasons. The Colts can’t get their offense and defense to play well in the same game. That could turn around against the lowly Patriots. COLTS: 20-16 Line: Seahawks minus 2 Geno Smith faces the team that drafted him after turning his career around on his fourth stop and going to the Pro Bowl the past two seasons. The Seahawks are fighting for the playoffs while the Jets have fallen apart. Their coach and GM already have been fired. Aaron Rodgers’ future is uncertain. Yet, the team still has plenty of talent. SEAHAWKS: 20-17 Line: Commanders minus 6 Jayden Daniels and the Commanders have hit a detour on their road to the playoffs, losing three straight games. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s offense has stalled during Washington’s recent skid. The Titans are coming off a big upset in Houston and Will Levis has asserted himself since returning from an injury a month ago. Tennessee has the No. 2 defense in the league so it’ll be tough for Daniels and the Commanders to get back on track in this one. COMMANDERS: 24-17 Line: Texans minus 4 1/2 C.J. Stroud and the Texans are having some issues this season. Not even close to Jacksonville’s troubles, though. The Jaguars could have Trevor Lawrence back after he missed two games. That won’t be enough. Houston has won 11 of the past 13 games vs. Jacksonville. The Texans are 2-6 ATS in their past eight games vs. AFC opponents. The Jaguars are 4-1 ATS in their past five games. TEXANS: 24-20 Line: Buccaneers minus 6 Panthers coach Dave Canales has the team playing better and Bryce Young is showing some of the potential that made him a No. 1 overall pick. Canales’ familiarity with Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay’s offense should help Carolina’s defense. The Buccaneers can’t afford a letdown as they try to make a push to get back in the playoff race. They’re getting key players healthy, their three-headed rushing attack has added balance to the offense and the defense needs to build off a solid performance last week. BUCCANEERS: 24-20 Line: Ravens minus 3 Both teams are coming off impressive wins in the same stadium in Los Angeles one night apart. The Ravens had shorter rest following the Monday night win. Barkley has been a sensational addition for the Eagles. Henry has made a major impact in Baltimore. Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson go head-to-head for the first time. The Ravens have won two in a row in the series. Philadelphia has the better defense and that could be the difference. EAGLES: 26-23 Line: Bills minus 7 The inconsistent 49ers need Brock Purdy, Trent Williams and Nick Bosa back from injuries. The defending NFC champions have lost two in a row, but they’re only one game back in their division. The rested Bills have won six in a row and are coming off a bye. Josh Allen in the MVP favorite and Buffalo can clinch another division title this weekend. BILLS: 26-23 Line: Broncos minus 5 1/2 Maybe Jameis Winston gets to play in the snow again. Winston has reinvigorated the Browns, though too late for it to matter this season. Rookie QB Bo Nix has helped turn the Broncos into a playoff contender with plenty of help from receiver Courtland Sutton and a strong defense. BRONCOS: 23-19 Last week: Straight up: 9-4. Against spread: 8-5. Overall: Straight up: 121-68. Against spread: 97-80-2. Prime-time: Straight up: 28-12. Against spread: 21-18-1. Best Bet: Straight up: 8-4. Against spread: 7-5. Minutes of an Executive meeting from June of that year state further action would be considered “as appropriate” if the DUP went ahead with a threat to rotate its ministers. The minutes are within files which have been declassified at the Public Record Office in Belfast. Devolved powersharing had been restored to Northern Ireland in May 2000 when Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble had received the backing of his party to go back into the Assembly, despite there having been no decommissioning of IRA arms at that point. Then DUP deputy leader Mr Robinson and Mr Dodds took up the offices as ministers for regional development and social development, but refused to attend Executive meetings due to the presence of Sinn Fein ministers. The party also said it would rotate its ministerial posts to prevent other parties from taking them. A minute of an Executive meeting on June 8 said Mr Robinson and Mr Dodds had refused a request from First Minister Mr Trimble and deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon to meet with them “to discuss recent public comments by the DUP concerning their positions as ministers”. The minute records that the Executive endorsed a proposal from the First and deputy First Ministers to write again to the two DUP ministers setting out sanctions against them. It says: “The First Minister and and Deputy First Minister would assume responsibility for representing the Executive Committee on transport matters at the British-Irish Council in place of the Minister for Regional Development. “The Minister for Social Development and the Minister for Regional Development would not be nominated to attend meetings of the Joint Ministerial Committee. “Pending the receipt of satisfactory assurances from DUP Ministers regarding the confidentiality and integrity of Executive Committee business, the Minister for Social Development and Minister for Regional Development would not receive Executive Committee papers as of right. “The First Minister and Deputy First Minister would seek briefing, as appropriate, from officials in the Department for Regional Development and Department for Social Development.” The minute continues: “If the DUP carried out their threat to change the holders of the two Ministerial offices on a frequent basis, the Executive Committee would consider other action as appropriate.” Mr Robinson and Mr Dodds resigned as ministers on June 27 and were replaced by party colleagues Gregory Campbell and Maurice Morrow. A minute from an Executive meeting that day says: “The Executive Committee noted that the Minister for Social Development and Minister for Regional Development would be resigning their posts that afternoon, and expressed concern at the proposed rotation of the ministries held by their Party Members.”Mayor Jacob Frey proposed to cut his recommended 2025 budget’s property tax levy increase on Friday as the city council dug into his plan and days after a Council Member Emily Koski announced a run for mayor and proposed a nearly identical change. Frey unveiled a $1.9 billion budget blueprint in August with a proposed 8.1% tax levy increase. His new proposal would increase the city’s overall levy by 6.4%. The levy is the total amount of money raised through property taxes; changes to individual tax bills will vary. The Minneapolis City Council on Friday began debating revisions to Frey’s budget in what promises to be a series of marathon “markup” meetings before the council votes on a final budget Tuesday night. Council members proposed a whopping 73 amendments to Frey’s budget, and began going through them on Friday. The meeting was contentious from the start, with Council Member Linea Palmisano accusing her colleagues of locking her out of talks. “We are equal members of this body and we need to start acting like it,” she said. Frey said the council amendments add “wants” while cutting needs; divert city funds to private organizations; and irresponsibly deplete the city’s cash reserves. He said the council’s amendments cut core services in order to increase spending to nonprofits, “pet projects” in wards and “unvetted, one-time programs.” Frey said if the council disposed of amendments like that, he’d support reducing his proposed hike by using over $780,000 in unspent federal pandemic funds; cutting $2.3 million from 20 departments; and cutting $5.7 million from a technology improvement plan. The council declined, however, to go along with Koski’s proposed levy decrease, but approved other cuts that bring the levy increase down to 6.9%. Some council members were offended by Frey’s characterization of ward projects as “pet projects.” Council Member Katie Cashman suggested the mayor was trying to “one-up” the council’s budget cuts. Much was made of the fact that Frey put out a news release and letter Friday laying out his proposal to reduce the levy increase. Council Member Jason Chavez accused the mayor of “legislating through press releases” instead of talking to council members. Asked about the mayor’s proposal coming on the heels of hers, Koski said, “Months after the mayor proposed the highest projected levy increase in a decade, then he decided to finally come to work.” Frey said the council skipped his amendments, most likely for political reasons, but he’s happy to see the council wants to cut taxes. “I love that they now have an appetite to reduce taxes,” he said. “I would like to see property taxes reduced further. We can get down to that 6.4% levy [increase].” The council continues work on the budget Monday.Inheritance tax is an 'attack on British farming'

Upset Special: Straight up: 7-5. Against spread: 7-5. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
