The tech company, Evolv, revealed in a public filing that it “received a voluntary document request from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York” on Nov. 1. It was unclear what the request was seeking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan declined to comment on the request, which was first reported by the Daily News. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Evolv said the company was “pleased to cooperate with all government agencies and regulators who request information from our company.” The Massachusetts-based tech company, whose scanners have also been used at sports stadiums and schools, has faced allegations of misconduct. Last month, Evolv’s board of directors fired its chief executive following an internal investigation that found certain sales had been “subject to extra-contractual terms and conditions.” On Tuesday, the company announced it had resolved a previous probe launched by the Federal Trade Commission last year over allegations of deceptive marketing practices. The company is also under separate investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Despite the legal and regulatory scrutiny, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a pilot program this summer to bring a handful of scanners to the city's subways to deter gun violence. The initiative drew immediate criticism from civil liberties groups who said the searches were unconstitutional, along with questions about its efficacy. In October, the city revealed the scanners did not detect any passengers with firearms — but falsely alerted more than 100 times. Adam Pemble, an Associated Press video journalist who covered some of the biggest global news of the past two decades, from earthquakes and conflicts to political summits and elections, has died. He was 52. Pemble died Thursday in Minneapolis surrounded by friends and family, according to his friend Mike Moe, who helped care for him in the final weeks of his fight against cancer. Known for bringing stories alive with his camera, Pemble epitomized the best of television news traditions, casting a curious and compassionate lens onto the lives of the people and communities whose stories he told. He joined the AP in 2007 in New York before moving to Prague in 2011 to help launch AP’s first cross-format operation combining photography, text stories and video. He enhanced Eastern European news coverage, creating distinctive stories highlighting the region’s culture and society. “Adam was an incredibly talented and passionate journalist and an empathetic storyteller. He had this amazing ability to get anyone to talk to him on camera, which I attribute to the Midwestern charm he embodied throughout his life.” said Sara Gillesby, AP’s Director of Global Video and Pemble’s former manager in New York when he joined the AP. “He was the best of us.” Pemble was born in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, in 1972 and grew up in Minneapolis. After graduating with a degree in mass communications from Minnesota State University Moorhead, he started his journalism career in 1997 at KVLY, a television station in Fargo, North Dakota, and later worked at WCCO in Minneapolis. “He had the skills of the old-school camera people to meet a deadline and turn a beautiful story,” said Arthur Phillips, a cameraman who worked with Pemble at WCCO. “But he had a calling for greater things.” Moving to New York, Pemble covered some of the biggest stories in the city, including the trial of Bernie Madoff, interviews with former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and with then-real estate developer, now U.S. president-elect, Donald Trump. He went to Haiti to cover the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, where he captured shocking images of devastation. A few weeks later he was in Vancouver, covering the Winter Olympics. With his transfer to Prague, Pemble quickly became the go-to video journalist deployed to the biggest news events in Europe, interviewing government leaders, covering violent protests, the aftermath of terror attacks and numerous national elections across the continent. “An inquiring mind, a keen eye and a healthy skepticism for those in power who tried to spin away from the truth all combined to make Adam’s stories as rich in colour as he was in character,” said Sandy MacIntyre, former AP head of global video. “Time and again he was asked to do the impossible and without fail he delivered the exceptional.” ”But more than all of that, he was the colleague and friend you wanted by your side because if Adam was there we knew we were going to be the winning team.” As civil unrest rocked Ukraine in 2014, Pemble reported from Kyiv and later Donetsk, where he covered the first Russian-backed demonstrations before spending weeks in Crimea during Russia’s annexation of the strategic peninsula. His video reports included the last remaining Ukrainian sailors loyal to Kyiv, who had finally abandoned their ship and came ashore. With the Russian national anthem playing from a car in the background, his final shot showed two distraught sailors heckled as they walked away. Pemble returned to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country in 2022. Among his many assignments was March 2023 AP interview by Executive Editor Julie Pace with across Ukraine to cities near some of the fiercest fighting. “Adam showed up to every assignment with enthusiasm, creativity and commitment to his work and his colleagues. He loved what he did, and so many of us at AP are better for having worked alongside him,” Pace said. When not deployed overseas, set his camera’s gaze on his new home in the Czech Republic, offering insight into the traditions and unique stories of Eastern Europe. From Christmas carp fishing at sunrise to graffiti artists in Prague to the intimate story of a Slovak priest challenging the celibacy rules of the Catholic Church, he brought his unmistakable style. He worked with a traditional large broadcast camera in an era where many video shooters shifted to smaller, lighter cameras. He always put himself in the right place to let reality unfold like “an old school analog painter in an often fast and furious digital age,” former AP cameraman Ben Jary recalled. Pemble’s interest in visual storytelling led to experimenting with new technologies, including aerial videography. In 2015, he was the first major news agency camera operator to film live drone footage when reporting on the migration crisis in the Balkans. An avid gardener who planted trees and chilis on his rooftop in Prague, he was adventurous in the kitchen and especially proud of his vegan “meatloaf,” friends said. He loved a seedy dive bar as much as a Michelin restaurant and foods as varied as charcoal choux pastry with truffle creme and his favourite road trip junk food, Slim Jim’s jerky and Salted Nut Rolls. New research shows restaurant chains and food concepts are helping shopping malls regain their footing, driving consumers to the once-struggling spaces. The data from Yelp shows restaurants have become a driving force in this ever-changing retail landscape, helping to catapult visitor numbers above pre-pandemic levels at malls. Shoppers grab a bite to eat and then spend their money at various businesses before and after they dine out — creating a bounce-back effect for what has often been dubbed a "struggling industry." Days of packed shopping malls are beginning to return, but they look a bit different than what we were used to in the 1990s and early 2000s. More are on the way, including a Texas Roadhouse in the near future. "Five times more traffic," Tony Ke, the owner of TJ Hibachi and Sushi said. Ke said through the ups and downs of the coronavirus pandemic, and many folks opting for online shopping over the years, things are finally turning around. He said business is booming with five times more traffic in the mall food court than in years past. "It's really getting better and better," Ke said. And he's not alone. "We've had some other malls approach us. Actually, use the space where Mrs. Fields used to be in," Bolton said. The organization that tracks retail foot traffic reports the primary reason is restaurants and food concepts in malls. They are up 7% from 2019 to 2024. Yelp recently released a report of the top 25 mall brands, and 17 of the top 25 mall brands are restaurant chains: Cheesecake Factory at number 1 BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse at 4 Starbucks at 6 Olive Garden at 7 Panera at 10 Chili's at 21 Food concepts are a driving force as well. This includes Filipino, Vegan and specifically Bubble Teas —which are up 100% over the last five years, according to Yelp. Michael Goldberg, a professor in the Department of Design Innovation at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, said a generation that has virtually lived online plays a critical role in the process. "Many Americans, particularly younger Americans, are focused on experiences and nothing is better than sharing food with friends," Goldberg said. Young social media influencers are eating food on camera, providing reviews and driving people to dive in and try the food. The TikTok generation has given a major boost to once-struggling brands and revived them tenfold. Case in point: Chili's Triple Dipper. "The thought that Chili's is back and being driven by influencer videos on TikTok is quite fascinating and, you know, I mean, there is a nostalgia for brands," Goldberg said. Localized community programming and holiday events like pictures with Santa are a mainstay at malls like Great Northern. Lori Weidleman, who has been cranking out pretzels at Auntie Anne's since 1997, said change is constant. However, she added it's become apparent people will pay for a quality product that takes them back to a special moment in life. "Ohio's doing really good. We're strong and beating our goals and our targets. And it's multi-generational interest," Weidleman said. The first of the two Christmas Day episodes will air at 7:30pm on the big day, while the second is scheduled for 10:35pm - meaning a nail-biting three-hour wait after what is sure to be a huge cliffhanger. Additionally, Boxing Day (Thursday 26th December 2024) will also not air early on BBC iPlayer and will be available in line with the terrestrial release at 8.30pm . Daniel Fernando told the Bulacan youth in his state of the children's address (SOCA) he delivered during the Provincial Children's Congress held on Nov. 16 at The Pavilion, Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center here. Fernando also highlighted the efforts of the provincial government of Bulacan in combating malnutrition and ensured that there are enough funds allotted for nutrition-related programs. "Cases of malnutrition went down due to efficient implementation of our Bulacan Nutrition Action Plan, but this has to be streamlined further and align it to the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition or PPAN 2023-2028," said Fernando. The governor also commended Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office head Rowena Tiongson for being recognized as the Outstanding Provincial Nutrition Action Officer in the 2024 Gitnang Luzon Gawad Parangal sa Nutrisyon held recently. Fernando announced the province's second consecutive recognition in the Gawad Edukampyon for Local Governance Award (province category) after being ranked first in the entire region for Early Childhood Care and Development Accreditation. Currently, Bulacan has 995 public learning centers, catering to 48,644 enrolled children in child development centers. Discovery, the parent company of TNT Sports, sued the NBA in New York state court in August after the league did not accept the company’s matching offer for one of the packages in its new 11-year media rights deal, which will begin with the 2025-26 season. Even though “Inside the NBA” will be on ESPN and ABC, TNT Sports will continue to produce the show. It will air from Atlanta, except when the show goes on the road. The quartet of Ernie Johnson Jr., Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal will remain with the show. Barkley signed an extension with Warner Bros. The tech company, Evolv, revealed in a public filing that it “received a voluntary document request from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York” on Nov. 1. It was unclear what the request was seeking. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan declined to comment on the request, which was first reported by the Daily News. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for Evolv said the company was “pleased to cooperate with all government agencies and regulators who request information from our company.” The Massachusetts-based tech company, whose scanners have also been used at sports stadiums and schools, has faced allegations of misconduct. Last month, Evolv’s board of directors fired its chief executive following an internal investigation that found certain sales had been “subject to extra-contractual terms and conditions.” On Tuesday, the company announced it had resolved a previous probe launched by the Federal Trade Commission last year over allegations of deceptive marketing practices. The company is also under separate investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Despite the legal and regulatory scrutiny, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a pilot program this summer to bring a handful of scanners to the city's subways to deter gun violence. Adam Pemble, an Associated Press video journalist who covered some of the biggest global news of the past two decades, from earthquakes and conflicts to political summits and elections, has died. He was 52. Pemble died Thursday in Minneapolis surrounded by friends and family, according to his friend Mike Moe, who helped care for him in the final weeks of his fight against cancer. Known for bringing stories alive with his camera, Pemble epitomized the best of television news traditions, casting a curious and compassionate lens onto the lives of the people and communities whose stories he told. He joined the AP in 2007 in New York before moving to Prague in 2011 to help launch AP’s first cross-format operation combining photography, text stories and video. He enhanced Eastern European news coverage, creating distinctive stories highlighting the region’s culture and society. “Adam was an incredibly talented and passionate journalist and an empathetic storyteller. He had this amazing ability to get anyone to talk to him on camera, which I attribute to the Midwestern charm he embodied throughout his life.” said Sara Gillesby, AP’s Director of Global Video and Pemble’s former manager in New York when he joined the AP. “He was the best of us.” Pemble was born in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota, in 1972 and grew up in Minneapolis. After graduating with a degree in mass communications from Minnesota State University Moorhead, he started his journalism career in 1997 at KVLY, a television station in Fargo, North Dakota, and later worked at WCCO in Minneapolis. “He had the skills of the old-school camera people to meet a deadline and turn a beautiful story,” said Arthur Phillips, a cameraman who worked with Pemble at WCCO. “But he had a calling for greater things.” Moving to New York, Pemble covered some of the biggest stories in the city, including the trial of Bernie Madoff, interviews with former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and with then-real estate developer, now U.S. president-elect, Donald Trump. He went to Haiti to cover the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, where he captured shocking images of devastation. A few weeks later he was in Vancouver, covering the Winter Olympics. With his transfer to Prague, Pemble quickly became the go-to video journalist deployed to the biggest news events in Europe, interviewing government leaders, covering violent protests, the aftermath of terror attacks and numerous national elections across the continent. “An inquiring mind, a keen eye and a healthy skepticism for those in power who tried to spin away from the truth all combined to make Adam’s stories as rich in colour as he was in character,” said Sandy MacIntyre, former AP head of global video. “Time and again he was asked to do the impossible and without fail he delivered the exceptional.” ”But more than all of that, he was the colleague and friend you wanted by your side because if Adam was there we knew we were going to be the winning team.” As civil unrest rocked Ukraine in 2014, Pemble reported from Kyiv and later Donetsk, where he covered the first Russian-backed demonstrations before spending weeks in Crimea during Russia’s annexation of the strategic peninsula. His video reports included the last remaining Ukrainian sailors loyal to Kyiv, who had finally abandoned their ship and came ashore. With the Russian national anthem playing from a car in the background, his final shot showed two distraught sailors heckled as they walked away. Pemble returned to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country in 2022. Among his many assignments was March 2023 AP interview by Executive Editor Julie Pace with across Ukraine to cities near some of the fiercest fighting. “Adam showed up to every assignment with enthusiasm, creativity and commitment to his work and his colleagues. He loved what he did, and so many of us at AP are better for having worked alongside him,” Pace said. When not deployed overseas, set his camera’s gaze on his new home in the Czech Republic, offering insight into the traditions and unique stories of Eastern Europe. From Christmas carp fishing at sunrise to graffiti artists in Prague to the intimate story of a Slovak priest challenging the celibacy rules of the Catholic Church, he brought his unmistakable style. He worked with a traditional large broadcast camera in an era where many video shooters shifted to smaller, lighter cameras. He always put himself in the right place to let reality unfold like “an old school analog painter in an often fast and furious digital age,” former AP cameraman Ben Jary recalled. Pemble’s interest in visual storytelling led to experimenting with new technologies, including aerial videography. In 2015, he was the first major news agency camera operator to film live drone footage when reporting on the migration crisis in the Balkans. An avid gardener who planted trees and chilis on his rooftop in Prague, he was adventurous in the kitchen and especially proud of his vegan “meatloaf,” friends said. New research shows restaurant chains and food concepts are helping shopping malls regain their footing, driving consumers to the once-struggling spaces. The data from Yelp shows restaurants have become a driving force in this ever-changing retail landscape, helping to catapult visitor numbers above pre-pandemic levels at malls. Shoppers grab a bite to eat and then spend their money at various businesses before and after they dine out — creating a bounce-back effect for what has often been dubbed a "struggling industry." Days of packed shopping malls are beginning to return, but they look a bit different than what we were used to in the 1990s and early 2000s. More are on the way, including a Texas Roadhouse in the near future. "Five times more traffic," Tony Ke, the owner of TJ Hibachi and Sushi said. Ke said through the ups and downs of the coronavirus pandemic, and many folks opting for online shopping over the years, things are finally turning around. He said business is booming with five times more traffic in the mall food court than in years past. "It's really getting better and better," Ke said. And he's not alone. "We've had some other malls approach us. Actually, use the space where Mrs. Fields used to be in," Bolton said. Yelp recently released a report of the top 25 mall brands, and 17 of the top 25 mall brands are restaurant chains: Cheesecake Factory at number 1 BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse at 4 Starbucks at 6 Olive Garden at 7 Panera at 10 Chili's at 21 Food concepts are a driving force as well. This includes Filipino, Vegan and specifically Bubble Teas —which are up 100% over the last five years, according to Yelp. Michael Goldberg, a professor in the Department of Design Innovation at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, said a generation that has virtually lived online plays a critical role in the process. "Many Americans, particularly younger Americans, are focused on experiences and nothing is better than sharing food with friends," Goldberg said. Young social media influencers are eating food on camera, providing reviews and driving people to dive in and try the food. The TikTok generation has given a major boost to once-struggling brands and revived them tenfold. Case in point: Chili's Triple Dipper. "The thought that Chili's is back and being driven by influencer videos on TikTok is quite fascinating and, you know, I mean, there is a nostalgia for brands," Goldberg said. Localized community programming and holiday events like pictures with Santa are a mainstay at malls like Great Northern. Lori Weidleman, who has been cranking out pretzels at Auntie Anne's since 1997, said change is constant. However, she added it's become apparent people will pay for a quality product that takes them back to a special moment in life. "Ohio's doing really good. We're strong and beating our goals and our targets. And it's multi-generational interest," Weidleman said. The first of the two Christmas Day episodes will air at 7:30pm on the big day, while the second is scheduled for 10:35pm - meaning a nail-biting three-hour wait after what is sure to be a huge cliffhanger. Daniel Fernando told the Bulacan youth in his state of the children's address (SOCA) he delivered during the Provincial Children's Congress held on Nov. 16 at The Pavilion, Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center here. Fernando also highlighted the efforts of the provincial government of Bulacan in combating malnutrition and ensured that there are enough funds allotted for nutrition-related programs. "Cases of malnutrition went down due to efficient implementation of our Bulacan Nutrition Action Plan, but this has to be streamlined further and align it to the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition or PPAN 2023-2028," said Fernando. The governor also commended Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office head Rowena Tiongson for being recognized as the Outstanding Provincial Nutrition Action Officer in the 2024 Gitnang Luzon Gawad Parangal sa Nutrisyon held recently. Fernando announced the province's second consecutive recognition in the Gawad Edukampyon for Local Governance Award (province category) after being ranked first in the entire region for Early Childhood Care and Development Accreditation. Currently, Bulacan has 995 public learning centers, catering to 48,644 enrolled children in child development centers. Fernando said that 477 out of 569 barangay in the province now have child representatives as part of the Local Council for the Protection of Children. The popular studio show will appear on ESPN and ABC beginning next season as part of a settlement between Warner Bros. Discovery and the NBA that was announced on Monday. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of TNT Sports, sued the NBA in New York state court in August after the league did not accept the company’s matching offer for one of the packages in its new 11-year media rights deal, which will begin with the 2025-26 season. Even though “Inside the NBA” will be on ESPN and ABC, TNT Sports will continue to produce the show. It will air from Atlanta, except when the show goes on the road. The quartet of Ernie Johnson Jr., Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal will remain with the show. Barkley signed an extension with Warner Bros.
