Former Green Party leader Caroline Lucas has also resigned as vice-president of the animal welfare organisation, with both of them expressing their “sadness” over leaving the roles. It comes after an Animal Rising investigation made claims of cruelty at “RSPCA Assured” slaughterhouses in England and Scotland, with the campaign group sharing footage of alleged mistreatment. RSPCA Assured is a scheme whereby approved farms must comply with the organisation’s “stringent higher welfare standards”, according to its website. Mr Packham shared the news of his resignation on social media, saying: “It is with enormous sadness that I have resigned from my role as president of the RSPCA. “I would like to register my respect and admiration for all the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to protect animals from cruelty.” Ms Lucas said she and Mr Packham failed to get the charity’s leadership to act. She posted on X, formerly Twitter: “With huge sadness I’m resigning as VP of the RSPCA, a role I’ve held with pride for over 15 years. “But their Assured Schemes risk misleading the public & legitimising cruelty. “I tried with @ChrisGPackham to persuade the leadership to act but sadly failed.” In June, the RSPCA commissioned an independent review of 200 farms on its assurance scheme which concluded the scheme was “operating effectively” to assure animal welfare on member farms. Following Animal Rising’s release of footage last week, the charity said it was “appalled” by what was shown, adding that it launched an immediate investigation and suspended three slaughterhouses from the scheme. In the wake of Mr Packham and Ms Lucas’ resignations, an RSPCA spokesperson said it is “simply not true” that the organisation has failed to take urgent action. They said: “We agree with Chris and Caroline on so many issues and have achieved so much together for animals, but we differ on how best to address the incredibly complex and difficult issue of farmed animal welfare. “We have discussed our work to drive up farmed animal welfare standards openly at length with them on many occasions and it is simply not true that we have not taken urgent action. “We took allegations of poor welfare incredibly seriously, launching an independent review of 200 farms which concluded that it was ‘operating effectively’ to improve animal welfare. “We are taking strong steps to improve oversight of welfare, implementing the recommendations in full including significantly increasing unannounced visits, and exploring technology such as body-worn cameras and CCTV, supported by £2 million of investment.” The charity insisted that while 94% of people continue to choose to eat meat, fish, eggs and dairy, it is the “right thing to do” to work with farmers to improve the lives of animals. “RSPCA Assured visit all farms on the scheme every year, but last year just 3% of farms were assessed for animal welfare by state bodies,” the spokesperson continued. “No-one else is doing this work. We are the only organisation setting and regularly monitoring animal welfare standards on farms. “We have pioneered change through RSPCA Assured, which has led to improvements throughout the industry including CCTV in slaughterhouses, banning barren battery cages for hens and sow stalls for pigs, giving salmon more space to swim and developing slower growing chicken breeds who have better quality of life.”

The EU market, with its diverse consumer base, presents opportunities for Kenyan products, including textiles, processed foods, and manufactured goods. By investing in capacity building and technology, local manufacturers can create high-quality products that meet EU standards. The Commission noted this proposed modification, which will modify 32 of the 51 active LMDS licenses held by GeoLinks, will provide more contiguous spectrum, and ensure its customers receive improved access to high-speed broadband services. Police in Georgia on Saturday fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse pro-EU protesters rallying for a ninth consecutive day against the prime minister's decision to shelve talks on joining the bloc. The Caucasus nation has been engulfed in turmoil since the governing Georgian Dream party declared that it had won a disputed October 26 election. The party's critics have accused it of creeping authoritarianism and of steering the country back towards Russia. Thousands of defiant pro-EU protesters in Georgia rallied Friday after the prime minister claimed victory in a "battle" against the opposition. Tens of thousands have taken to the streets since the election to protest against alleged electoral fraud. Fresh rallies took place across the country after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced last week that Georgia would not hold talks on European Union membership until 2028. Therefore, our priorities include further cooperation with Keidanren and its members. In particular, we have offered Japanese businesses the opportunity to establish joint ventures with Ukrainian companies, localize their technologies and production, open business representative offices, and supply high-tech industrial equipment and spare parts to Ukraine. Turnover stood at approximately Rs 5 billion with nine crossings. Mumbai: The voter turnout in buildings and highrises on Nov 20 was higher than in the slum and chawl pockets of the Mulund assembly constituency, showed booth-wise data procured by political parties from election officials. The turnout from highrises averaged 71% against the slum average of 51%. Mulund secured the third position across the city for maximum voter turnout at 61.4%. The top two positions were held by Bhandup and Borivli constituencies. "We typically observe substantial turnout from slum and chawl voters, who significantly contribute to increased voting percentages in most assembly constituencies. Additionally, the participation from buildings and high-rises is customarily lower than slums," said an observer. The data indicated that slum and chawl voting across various Mulund pockets ranged from 37% to 55%, averaging 51%. In comparison, buildings and highrise voting across various Mulund areas ranged from 55% to 79%, averaging 71%, showed the data. Citizens who exercised their franchise in Mulund comprised 93,971 male, 88,253 female voters and 14 under the ‘others' category, totalling 1,82,238 voters. The total registered electors in the constituency number of 2.9 lakh. Enhanced voter awareness amongst residents, particularly young and elderly citizens, in numerous societies across Mulund East and West contributed to increased voter turnout, according to a local activist. NGOs, including AGNI, generated substantial awareness through social media platforms. "I personally visited 250 housing societies, conducted meetings with executive committees and members, urging them to disseminate the message and ensure comprehensive voting participation," said local BJP candidate Mihir Kotecha. He highlighted that Mulund recorded the highest applications for home voting facility among 26 suburban assembly constituencies, with 498 applications from elderly citizens (above 85 years of age). NGOs and activists ensured maximum voter registrations and verification of electoral lists, said a Congress worker. Several housing societies in Mulund East and West had designated polling booths within their premises, encouraging resident participation. The mid-week election timing potentially influenced higher voter turnout. It comes after an Animal Rising investigation made claims of cruelty at “RSPCA Assured” slaughterhouses in England and Scotland, with the campaign group sharing footage of alleged mistreatment. RSPCA Assured is a scheme whereby approved farms must comply with the organisation’s “stringent higher welfare standards”, according to its website. Mr Packham shared the news of his resignation on social media, saying: “It is with enormous sadness that I have resigned from my role as president of the RSPCA. “I would like to register my respect and admiration for all the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to protect animals from cruelty.” Ms Lucas said she and Mr Packham failed to get the charity’s leadership to act. She posted on X, formerly Twitter: “With huge sadness I’m resigning as VP of the RSPCA, a role I’ve held with pride for over 15 years. “But their Assured Schemes risk misleading the public & legitimising cruelty. “I tried with @ChrisGPackham to persuade the leadership to act but sadly failed.” In June, the RSPCA commissioned an independent review of 200 farms on its assurance scheme which concluded the scheme was “operating effectively” to assure animal welfare on member farms. Following Animal Rising’s release of footage last week, the charity said it was “appalled” by what was shown, adding that it launched an immediate investigation and suspended three slaughterhouses from the scheme. In the wake of Mr Packham and Ms Lucas’ resignations, an RSPCA spokesperson said it is “simply not true” that the organisation has failed to take urgent action. They said: “We agree with Chris and Caroline on so many issues and have achieved so much together for animals, but we differ on how best to address the incredibly complex and difficult issue of farmed animal welfare. “We have discussed our work to drive up farmed animal welfare standards openly at length with them on many occasions and it is simply not true that we have not taken urgent action. “We took allegations of poor welfare incredibly seriously, launching an independent review of 200 farms which concluded that it was ‘operating effectively’ to improve animal welfare. “We are taking strong steps to improve oversight of welfare, implementing the recommendations in full including significantly increasing unannounced visits, and exploring technology such as body-worn cameras and CCTV, supported by £2 million of investment.” The charity insisted that while 94% of people continue to choose to eat meat, fish, eggs and dairy, it is the “right thing to do” to work with farmers to improve the lives of animals. “RSPCA Assured visit all farms on the scheme every year, but last year just 3% of farms were assessed for animal welfare by state bodies,” the spokesperson continued. “No-one else is doing this work. We are the only organisation setting and regularly monitoring animal welfare standards on farms. “We have pioneered change through RSPCA Assured, which has led to improvements throughout the industry including CCTV in slaughterhouses, banning barren battery cages for hens and sow stalls for pigs, giving salmon more space to swim and developing slower growing chicken breeds who have better quality of life.”

Disparities in value, seasonal shortages, and the challenge of matching each other’s needs fairly, often led to conflicts and stalled exchanges. Such misalignments in wants and resources made transactions cumbersome and hindered economic growth. Over time, these inefficiencies drove societies to adopt currency, which streamlined trade and gave value a more universal measure. However, as trade grew beyond local communities and regions, new challenges arose, demanding structure and predictability in cross-border exchanges. This paved the way for trade agreements, which have become the foundation of international commerce today. Designed to reduce barriers like tariffs and quotas, these agreements enable smoother, fairer exchanges between nations, fostering both bilateral and multilateral relationships. Where barter was once limited to immediate needs and resources, modern trade agreements now support an interconnected global economy, encouraging growth, innovation, and mutual prosperity. Local manufacturers can plug into this framework by leveraging the advantages offered through the EPA, such as accessing European markets without facing prohibitive tariffs. Trade between Kenya and the EU has not been entirely balanced. According to International Trade Centre (ITC), Kenya Exported products worth $1.1 billion to the EU while importing $1.7 billion, representing a slight trade imbalance of $0.6 billion in favour of EU in 2022. To scale up trade and bridge this imbalance, Kenyan industries must focus on manufacturing high-quality value – added products, moving beyond the agriculturally based products and raw materials. The EU market, with its diverse consumer base, presents opportunities for Kenyan products, including textiles, processed foods, and manufactured goods. By investing in capacity building and technology, local manufacturers can create high-quality products that meet EU standards. As Kenya awaits the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act by the US, there is an opportunity to further enhance our trade relations with the EU. By aligning its manufacturing strategies with the requirements of EU, Kenya can ensure that its products meet the necessary quality and regulatory standards, thus enhancing its competitiveness on the global stage. However, the journey towards seamless trading between Kenya and the EU is not without its challenges. A myriad of issues continue to hinder trade at national level, including competitiveness, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of access to finance for local manufacturers. To foster a conducive trading environment, both governments must engage in dialogue to address these barriers. The public notice outlines a three-step process in which licensees must first categorize and transfer their existing PA operations to new service codes PB or PF (base/mobile or fixed stations). Licensees are then required to submit information related to the respective codes, including but not limited to, coordinates, antenna specifications, and the number of units in operation. Finally, licensees must cancel their PA licenses or the licenses will be cancelled by the FCC after June 9, 2025. FCC Releases Proposed Order Modifying GeoLink’s LMDS licenses The Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB) released a proposed Order of Modification offering to substitute unassigned frequencies held by the Commission with frequencies currently held by GeoLink’s Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS). The Commission noted this proposed modification, which will modify 32 of the 51 active LMDS licenses held by GeoLinks, will provide more contiguous spectrum, and ensure its customers receive improved access to high-speed broadband services. GeoLinks will also return the remaining 19 unchanged active LMDS licenses to the Commission, which can repurpose them for future assignments. FCC Adopts 6 GHz Band Access for VLP Devices During the Open Meeting held on December 11th, the FCC adopted rules permitting very low power (VLP) devices to operate in the U-NII-6 (6.425-6.525 GHz) and U-NNI-8 (6.875-7.125) portions of the 6 GHz band. The rules are targeted at opening spectrum for unlicensed devices, such as wearable technology and AR/VR headsets, which have a wide range of industry applications, and follows on the FCC’s past actions to support the growth of 6G and Wi-Fi 7 infrastructure. While VLP devices will mostly be unrestricted, the Report and Order specifies employing a contention-based protocol and power controls to reduce the risk of interference, especially when operating as part of outdoor infrastructure. FCC Adopts Order Modifying Letter of Credit Rules The FCC adopted a Report and Order during their December Open Meeting which instituted changes to the letter of credit rules for broadband providers. Under the R&O, the Commission altered the qualification standard U.S. banks must meet to issue letters of credit to eligible telecommunications providers, increasing the number of qualifying banks in the process. Specifically, instead of relying on banks maintaining a Weiss bank safety rating of B- or better, the Commission will now only require a bank to be “well capitalized” based on definitions provided by the FDIC, Federal Reserve, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Letters of credit serve an important purpose of providing carriers with necessary financial support while ensuring banks can recover disbursed funds in the event of a default. Police in Georgia on Saturday fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse pro-EU protesters rallying for a ninth consecutive day against the prime minister's decision to shelve talks on joining the bloc. The Caucasus nation has been engulfed in turmoil since the governing Georgian Dream party declared that it had won a disputed October 26 election. The party's critics have accused it of creeping authoritarianism and of steering the country back towards Russia. Thousands of defiant pro-EU protesters in Georgia rallied Friday after the prime minister claimed victory in a "battle" against the opposition. Tens of thousands have taken to the streets since the election to protest against alleged electoral fraud. Fresh rallies took place across the country after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced last week that Georgia would not hold talks on European Union membership until 2028. Georgia's rights ombudsman, Levan Ioseliani, said police "had no legal grounds for the dispersal of peaceful rally." He called on the interior ministry "to immediately halt the dispersal of the protest, cease the detention of participants, and refrain from using special measures, ensuring that protesters can continue their demonstration peacefully." Thousands blocked the street outside parliament on Friday, with some blowing whistles and others setting off firecrackers. "People will continue the protest," said one demonstrator, 23-year-old Giorgi, wearing a Georgian flag and a back scarf pulled over his nose. "They're patient, I will be here for the rest of my life if it is necessary to save my country." Separate protests were held outside Georgia's public broadcaster -- accused of being a government propaganda tool -- as well as the education ministry and the country's tourism administration offices. Thousands have also staged anti-government rallies in the second city of Batumi on the Black Sea coast. On Friday, a court in Tbilisi put a 19-year-old youth activist in pre-trial detention on charges of "organising, leading, and participating in group violence". Zviad Tsetskhladze told the judge "the rule of law has been crushed. "Our actions are a form of resistance, aimed at preserving the rule of law, defending democracy, and protecting the rights of every individual." The prime minister on Friday praised his security forces for "successfully neutralising the protesters' capacity for violence". "We have won an important battle against liberal fascism in our country," he told a news conference, using language reminiscent of how the Kremlin in Russia targets its political opponents. "But the fight is not over. Liberal fascism in Georgia must be defeated entirely," Kobakhidze said. With both sides ruling out a compromise, there appeared to be no clear route out of the crisis. The leader of the opposition Lelo party, Mamuka Khazaradze, said the government "has resorted to arresting young activists and political opponents out of fear of relentless public protests and growing civil disobedience by public servants." Local media has also reported protests across the country, including in the cities of Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Rustavi and Telavi. Critics of Georgian Dream are enraged by what they call its betrayal of Tbilisi's bid for EU membership, enshrined in the constitution and supported by around 80 percent of the population. Mumbai: The voter turnout in buildings and highrises on Nov 20 was higher than in the slum and chawl pockets of the Mulund assembly constituency, showed booth-wise data procured by political parties from election officials. The turnout from highrises averaged 71% against the slum average of 51%. Mulund secured the third position across the city for maximum voter turnout at 61.4%. The top two positions were held by Bhandup and Borivli constituencies. "We typically observe substantial turnout from slum and chawl voters, who significantly contribute to increased voting percentages in most assembly constituencies. Additionally, the participation from buildings and high-rises is customarily lower than slums," said an observer. The data indicated that slum and chawl voting across various Mulund pockets ranged from 37% to 55%, averaging 51%. In comparison, buildings and highrise voting across various Mulund areas ranged from 55% to 79%, averaging 71%, showed the data. Citizens who exercised their franchise in Mulund comprised 93,971 male, 88,253 female voters and 14 under the ‘others' category, totalling 1,82,238 voters. The total registered electors in the constituency number of 2.9 lakh. Enhanced voter awareness amongst residents, particularly young and elderly citizens, in numerous societies across Mulund East and West contributed to increased voter turnout, according to a local activist.
