A bill that would expand Social Security benefits for millions of public sector workers such as teachers and firefighters is making its way to President Joe Biden's desk. For decades, federal policies have limited Social Security payments for many public service workers who also receive pensions. If the bill becomes law, it will expand Social Security benefits for an estimated 3 million Americans. My King City View Room is compact but not cramped and, as with all Moxy hotels, it uses clever space-saving hacks including a fold-away desk, storage hutches under the bed and pegs for hanging clothes. A large flatscreen TV includes complimentary streaming apps. The bathroom has a rain shower, terrazzo floors, a lava stone sink, MUK bath products and a mirror framed with bulbs, making you feel as if you’re backstage and about to go on. The on-site 24/7 fitness centre has a range of Pelotons and state-of-the-art equipment. Food + drink The crowning glory... The Highlight Room rooftop bar. There are five food and beverage destinations, so good luck dragging yourself outside. The Fix has complimentary filter coffee, juices, muffins, yoghurt and fruit every morning, and there’s also a small cafe with espresso machine, baked goods and sandwiches. As the sun sets, the same space becomes an atmospheric and buzzy cocktail bar. Sake No Hana... there’s no shortage of bar or dining options at the Moxy. Downstairs, modern Japanese restaurant Sake No Hana is a huge space decorated with big kimono-like tapestries and hot air balloon-style light fittings. Food is next level, with shareable dishes including chili crunch edamame, black truffle steak tartare, and inventive sushi and teppanyaki dishes. Silver Lining is a speakeasy-style piano lounge inspired by Andy Warhol’s Factory from the ’60s, thus the mural that includes Edie Sedgewick and the famous banana design for the first Velvet Underground album. Settle into blue velvet upholstered chairs, order the Warhol Margarita, and enjoy the solo pianists and combos who keep the room humming. NEW DELHI, India (AP) — A 13-year-old cricketer from India’s northern state of Bihar could become the sport's latest Twenty20 batting sensation. The Rajasthan Royals think so highly of Vaibhav Suryavanshi that they paid $130,000 in the Indian Premier League's mega auction for his services, making him the youngest ever to be selected. Suryavanshi came to the limelight last month when he scored a century against Australia's under-19 team off just 58 balls before he got out for 104. At the age of 13 years and 187 days, Suryavanshi broke the record of Bangladesh’s present test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who at the age of 14 years and 241 days held the previous record of scoring a century at youth level. On a protest in north London after a police raid on a Kurdish community centre The British state has escalated its repression of Kurds . Police arrested six people at the Kurdish Community Centre (KCC) in Haringey, north London, on Wednesday. Cops raided KCC claiming there was activity linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is based in Turkey. As around 100 people from the wider community protested against the raid, police barricaded KCC and arrested eight of the protesters. The British state proscribed the PKK as a terrorist organisation in 2001. “Any attack of this kind is unprecedented—I can say that without hesitation,” a spokesperson for Day-Mer, another Kurdish community organisation, told Socialist Worker. “The centre is under a barricade. The police have occupied it, people have been detained and some have been injured by the police.” The spokesperson said that there has been a “very broad and wide response against the police repression”. “The state’s heavy handedness is a concern and the community will continue to protest and be engaged with local politics so that the pressure is lifted,” they said. “Democratic organisations representing the community’s diversity have come together to call for an end to the repression of Kurdish people, organisations and institutions.” The attacks are an escalation, but come against a backdrop of repression. The spokesperson said, “For a number of years there has been pressure on the community centre from the Charity Commission. It was under pressure due to its recognition of the Kurdish national freedom struggle.” The British state has joined Turkey’s repressive regime to “quell and silence Kurdish efforts”. The Turkish state also is pressuring other governments to “stop any support and any tolerance of Kurdish issues”. When Sweden joined the Nato warmonger’s alliance earlier this year, it was pressured by president Recep Erdogan into repressing Kurdish organisations. “The Turkish government’s efforts to silence the Kurdish movement have increased,” the spokesperson explained. “And it’s obvious they want to weaken the Kurdish movement to have a better vantage point. “Since Brexit, Britain’s connection with Erdogan and Turkey has taken a different shape and there is a kind of collusion now. In February, former defence minister Grant Schapps met with Turkish defence minister Yasar Guler to strengthen that relation.” Following the raids, Day-Mer released a statement saying, “We demand the immediate release of those detained and an end to the police blockade of the Kurdish Community Centre, as well as the repression of Kurdish people. “We will not remain silent and will continue to stand in solidarity with the community and against the criminalisation of Kurdish institutions, their leaders and Kurds who stand for their freedom.” Police plan to continue to control the community centre over the next few days.
