No. 24 Arizona is coming off consecutive defeats for the first time in the Tommy Lloyd era when it faces undefeated Davidson on Wednesday to begin the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Arizona (2-2) lost at Wisconsin 103-88 on Nov. 15 and followed that with a home loss against Duke 69-55 on Friday. The Wildcats have dropped 15 spots in the Associated Press Top 25 poll in two weeks. Arizona's record is .500 this early in a season for the first time since it was 3-3 to start the 2017-18 schedule. "I've got work to do, so let's get to work," said Lloyd, in his fourth year as Arizona's head coach. "Let's see where we're at in a month, and if we're still struggling, you know what I'll do? I still got work to do, but I'm gonna get to it." Arizona shot 39.6 percent from the field against Duke, and just 26.1 percent (6 of 23) from 3-point range. The Wildcats were outrebounded by 43-30 and their 15 turnovers led to 19 points. Jaden Bradley led Arizona with 18 points and KJ Lewis added 12. Preseason All-American Caleb Love had eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Arizona made only one field goal in the last 5:39 as Duke pulled away after its lead was trimmed to six points. "We didn't play great," Lloyd said. "Now we need to take a step back and figure out why. Are there some schematic problems? Are there some problems with how our personnel is kind of put together? "We got to figure out what our certainties are, and the things we have to have, and then over the course of the next couple of days, if there's adjustments we need to make, we need to figure out what those are." Davidson is 4-0 after a 15-17 record last season, in which it lost its last six games to put an end to postseason hopes. A 93-66 win over visiting VMI on Friday followed a 91-85 win at Bowling Green and 76-70 victory over visiting East Tennessee State. The two wins by 10 points or fewer are important because Davidson was 6-12 in such games last season. It was 4-11 in games decided by five points or fewer. "The goal (is) to get better," Davidson head coach Matt McKillop said after the season opener. "We talk about fighting to win every possession. I think we had to figure out what that really felt like with the lights on." Davidson made 13 shots from 3-point range in the win over VMI. Reed Bailey had 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Bobby Durkin added 19 points, including 17 of them and a career-best five 3-pointers in the first half. Bailey leads Davidson in scoring (19 points per game) and rebounding (7.8). Durkin is shooting 57.9 percent (22 of 38) from the field and 54.2 percent (13 of 24) from 3-point range. By contrast, Arizona's Love is shooting 32 percent (16 of 50) from the field and 21.4 percent (6 of 28) from beyond the arc. Bradley leads Arizona with 15.5 points per game. He is shooting 50 percent (24 of 48) from the field and is 35.7 percent (5 of 14) from 3-point range. --Field Level Media

ADVERTISEMENT Try as she might, the Harris campaign didn’t mount an effective response–either in person or through its unprecedented $1.4 billion advertising budget–to counter the damaging claims. And the complaints had traction; for a month they rolled right over Harris. The Trump campaign wasn’t wrong about rising food costs in the Biden years; it was wrong, however, to blame it entirely on Biden Administration policies. The stage was set for higher prices–and not just in food–during the first Trump Administration's painfully slow initial response to the Covid-19 pandemic that took root in Jan. 2020. At least that’s what the best food price analysts on the planet, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS), noted in their latest “Food Prices and Spending” report on Nov. 1. According to ERS, “From 2019 to 2023, the all-food Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 25.0 percent–a higher increase than the all-items CPI, which grew at 19.2 percent over the same period.” While food prices increased less than transportation costs, “(T)hey rose faster than housing, medical care, and all other major categories.” So, yes, food prices soared during the Biden Administration but the rise wasn’t because Democrats lived in the White House, the ERS report continues. Instead, “Food price increases in 2020-21 were largely driven by shifting consumption patterns and supply chain disruptions resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic,” explains ERS. Recall the spring of 2020 when Covid hit the food market like a meteor. It knocked everything–production, delivery, sales, worker safety–miles from any semblance of normal. Hoarding then quickly undermined the food sector even more. ADVERTISEMENT Then two big shocks, neither related to American politics, slammed the slowly recovering food sector in 2022: an outbreak of deadly avian influenza (which, to date, has killed 71 million egg-laying hens and 14 million turkeys in the U.S.) and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a global leader in food exports. “In 2022, food prices increased faster than any year since 1979,” given the impact of both events, “which compounded other economy-wide inflationary pressures,” ERS says. Afterwards, however, “Food price growth slowed in 2023 and wholesale food prices and these other inflationary factors eased.” So, according to ERS, food prices spiked 25 percent between President Trump’s second to last year, 2019, and President Biden’s second year, 2022, due to a human pandemic, a poultry pandemic, and a bloody regional war between a global food superpower, Ukraine, and a global nuclear superpower, Russia. And that’s just one side–the grocery side–of a fluid, worldwide ag commodity market that “regularly rises or falls by more than 10 percent from one year to the next,” explains ERS’s food price report. For example, “In 2023 the production-weighted price” of corn, soybeans, and wheat “fell by 12.1 percent, while food prices increased by 5.8 percent.” In other words, food sellers boosted their prices by almost 6 percent while the collective price for “the top three U.S. field crops (that) comprise the majority of field crop inputs” in U.S. food dropped more than twice that amount. If the Trump campaign knew these facts, they simply ignored them and, instead, wisely began stockpiling tin cans and string.Federal appeals court upholds law requiring sale or ban of TikTok in the US
First treatment in 50 years for serious asthma attacks is ‘game-changer’ISLAMABAD — Pakistani police Monday fired tear gas canisters at supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to stop them from entering the capital, where they hoped to stage a sit-in to demand his release, officials said. The firing of tear gas came shortly after demonstrators — who traveled 93 miles from the restive northwest — began arriving and gathering near Islamabad. They defied a lockdown, previous tear gas and widespread arrests despite a ban on rallies in the city. The development came a day after the leadership of Khan’s party went ahead with the “long march” even as Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko arrived for a three-day visit. He was received at an airport near the capital by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday evening. Authorities said at least one police officer was killed and several officers and demonstrators were injured in clashes. The marchers appeared determined to enter Islamabad, where the lockdown, which has been in place for two days, has disrupted daily life. The government was in talks with Khan’s party to avoid any further violence, officials said. Khan, who has been in jail for over a year and faces more than 150 criminal cases, remains popular. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI, says the cases are politically motivated. A convoy of vehicles carrying protesters was expected to enter the capital Monday night. Security officials say they expect between 9,000 and 11,000 demonstrators, while the PTI says the number will be much higher. Video on social media showed Khan supporters donning gas masks and protective goggles. Travel between Islamabad and other cities has become nearly impossible. Ambulances and cars were seen turning back from areas along the key Grand Trunk Road highway in Punjab province, where shipping containers were used to block roads. Video circulating online showed some protesters operating heavy machinery to remove the containers.

The 17-year-old son of musicians Sinéad O’Connor and Dónal Lunny was found dead in an area of secluded wasteland behind Corke Abbey housing estate between Bray and Shankill on January 7th, 2022. He was admitted to TUH on December 29th, 2021 after he made a “serious” attempt to take his own life two days earlier, a sitting of Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard on Monday. Viewed as a “high-risk” patient by psychiatrists due to the seriousness of his suicide attempt, Shane was prescribed 24-hour, one-to-one supervision during his hospital stay. At the time of his admission, he was under the care of Tusla , the Child and Family Agency. The court heard evidence that on various occasions during his admission, supervision was not provided to Shane. On the morning of January 6th – when he absconded from TUH – there were no healthcare assistants available at the hospital to supervise him due to understaffing, the court heard. Prof Anthony O’Connor, a gastroenterology consultant overseeing Shane’s care while at TUH, said that “generally” one-to-one supervision of patients is provided by hospital staff. He said Shane’s supervision was “cobbled together” during his admission, provided at different times by his father Mr Lunny, care workers who were familiar with Shane and hospital healthcare assistants. Prof O’Connor said that while it was clear that Shane was unwell and troubled, his “gentleness, kindness and creativity” were apparent to all who cared for him. Florence Lambert, a clinical nurse manager, said nurses on Shane’s ward realised he was missing from his single room at about 10.30am on January 6th, the court heard. The ward was understaffed that day, the court heard. After hospital staff reviewed CCTV footage, it was determined that Shane had left the hospital at about 10am, and both gardaí and Tusla were subsequently informed he was missing. Dr Paula McKay, a consultant psychiatrist at TUH who cared for Shane during his admission, said she was not made aware of gaps in his supervision. She told coroner Dr Cróna Gallagher that had she known, she would have “escalated” the case, “because this was a very high risk”. Dr McKay outlined plans that were in train to involuntarily admit Shane to Linn Dara, a HSE Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Camhs) facility, following his stay at TUH. At the time he absconded, Shane was awaiting transfer to Linn Dara – subject to a court order – having recovered from the impacts of the suicide attempt. Mary Rose McCarthy, a psychiatrist attached to Camhs in Co Kildare, gave detailed evidence of Shane’s prior admissions to Linn Dara, his various diagnoses with mental and behavioural disorders and psychotic episodes, the impact of his sustained cannabis use and previous instances of his suicidal ideation and behaviour. Seán O’Connor, Shane’s grandfather, had objected to Ms McCarthy providing detailed evidence. He said it was “accepted” that Shane had a difficult youth and had a difficult time “with the politics of the day”. The court heard that Shane had spent time in care since he was 11 years old. He said Shane’s late mother Sinéad often spoke about her son, and to do them both justice there was no use in “raking over dead embers”. “A child arrived in hospital sick,” he said. “We’re talking about the systems that allowed him to escape.” A brief deposition provided by Ms O’Connor was read on to the court record. In the deposition, she said she identified her son to gardaí at the mortuary at St Columcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown, south Dublin, on January 8th. Several members of Shane’s family were present in court on Monday, including his father and his uncle, the writer Joseph O’Connor. Fiachra Gallagher is an Irish Times journalist
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Dejounte Murray plans to return to the New Orleans Pelicans ' lineup on Wednesday night for the first time since fracturing his left hand in a season-opening victory over Chicago on Oct. 23. And when Murray takes the court against the Toronto Raptors , his mother will be on his mind. After practice on Tuesday, Murray discussed his impending return and disclosed more details about the previously unspecified “personal matters” that caused him to leave the team during the final days of the preseason. His mother had a stroke, he said. “It was tough to leave and go deal with that. As she got better, she wanted me to come play,” Murray said of his last-minute decision to start against Chicago. He added that his hand injury near the end of that game was God's way of telling him, “‘Nah, you need to stay with your mom.’” “I was more concerned about my mother. That was my priority,” Murray continued. “I wasn’t really worried about my recovery.” Murray's mother has recovered well, he said, while he is “healthy and ready to help this team.” “I’m ready to hoop. Play for my mother — she’s going to be watching," Murray said. “I’m ready to compete, bring that winning spirit.” The Pelicans (4-14) certainly could use the help, having lost 14 of 16 games since opening the season with a pair of victories. Injuries have ravaged the roster. At times, all five starters have been out. Star power forward Zion Williamson has missed 12 games this season — one with an illness and 11 with a hamstring injury. Herb Jones has been sidelined by a shoulder strain and Brandon Ingram's status is in doubt after he sat out practice on Tuesday with calf soreness that also sidelined him during a loss on Monday night at Indiana. But at least two starters — Murray and fellow guard CJ McCollum — are expected to play against the Raptors. “I don’t care how many games we’ve lost. I just know every time I step on the floor I feel like we can win games,” said Murray, who had 14 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in his lone game with the Pelicans. "That’s just my mentality, and I feel like it can carry over to a lot of guys.” AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA
MAHOMET — Minutes before she and two family members were fatally shot Wednesday night, a Mahomet woman described the man thought to be the killer in a social-media post. On a Twitter account where she shared occasional selfies, life updates and memes, Sara Mason, 26, posted about a man in a motorcycle helmet being outside her home the night of Wednesday, Dec. 18, less than 20 minutes before police were called to the scene. "Trying not to be scared suburban white woman about the dude waiting outside of my house for a .... While now? Wanting to speak to my brother while wearing a motorcycle helmet (drive in a car)," she posted at 9:22 p.m. Within a minute, she added, "He like left but will probably be back. Anyway." Mahomet police were called at 9:41 p.m. to the residence on Riverside Court, where they discovered Mason, who was pronounced dead at the scene; and her mother, 61-year-old Janis Mason, and brother, 23-year-old Caleb Mason, who both died a little later after being taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. It does not appear that Sara Mason recognized John R. Lyons, 24, the man police suspect in the triple homicide. Lyons fled to suburban Chicago, where he was killed in a confrontation with police in Berwyn. Champaign County court records indicate that in June, Lyons filed a lawsuit alleging Caleb Mason had harmed him in some way and requesting compensation in an amount between $15,000 and $50,000. Mahomet police Chief Mike Metzler said Lyons knew one of the victims. Police reports thus far have not included details about whether Lyons was wearing a motorcycle helmet. However, on Thursday, Dec. 19, far-right political pundit and streamer Nicholas Fuentes posted that an armed individual who arrived at his house late Wednesday night wearing a motorcycle helmet had "committed a triple homicide in southern Illinois." "Last night an armed killer made an attempt on my life at my home, which was recently doxed on this platform," Fuentes wrote. He said the killer broke into his neighbor's home in Berwyn, where police said Lyons broke in and killed two dogs while attempting to evade arrest. Fuentes posted multiple clips of footage from Ring security cameras that show a man in brown pants, a blue coat and a white motorcycle helmet who is carrying a firearm and crossbow. In the footage, the man gets out of a car while wearing a motorcycle helmet and appears to ring the doorbell and knock on the front door, then attempt to gain access through multiple entry points. The only audio in any of the clips is while the man is at the front door and apparently says "Yo, Nick." Timestamps on footage Fuentes posted indicate the events around his home in Berwyn beginning at 11:29 p.m., about one hour and 50 minutes after police were called to the home in Mahomet. About 10 minutes later, at 11:38 p.m., Berwyn police responded to a report of a man with a gun. "It is to the freedom of the people of Illinois that we are addressing this law," Gov. J.B. Pritzker said May 10, referring to the state's semiautomatic weapons ban, "their freedom to be at the Highland Park parade without getting shot and killed." Frequency Electronics Announces Second Quarter Fiscal 2025 Financial Results Conference Call: Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 4:30 PM ETOTTAWA - The Liberal government introduced a stand-alone bill to implement its proposed GST holiday Wednesday, hours after the NDP threatened it would not pass the legislation if it was linked to a $250 rebate for working Canadians. The bill would give people a two-month GST exemption on items like premade food at grocery stores, children’s clothes, toys, some alcoholic beverages and other holiday season staples. The Liberals announced the tax break last week at the same time as they pledged to send $250 benefit cheques for people who earned a working income up to $150,000 last year. Speaking on background, a finance ministry official said that legislation on the GST moved first because of a “real time crunch” compared to the rebate. The GST holiday is expected to begin Dec. 14 and last until mid-February, while the benefit payments are not expected until early spring. “People are desperate for relief, and the NDP has won a little help for them,” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in a statement on Wednesday evening. He added that his party would go further. “This is not enough — the NDP will permanently take the tax off daily essentials and monthly bills if we win the election, including bills like internet, cellphone and home heating.” The NDP plan was forecast to cost about $5 billion permanently. The Liberal’s temporary tax break is to cost about $1.6 billion this year. MPs began debating the bill Wednesday night and are expected to vote on it Thursday. While the NDP initially said it would support the whole plan, Singh said Wednesday his party would only support legislation to implement the GST break. He said the benefit plan needs to be fixed to include fully retired seniors and people who rely on disability benefits. The Bloc Québécois is also calling on the government to expand the benefit payments to more seniors. The Liberals need support from at least one opposition party to pass the bill to implement the GST break, which is now expected to come to a vote on Thursday. The NDP introduced a motion to pause the ongoing privilege debate in order to get the bill introduced, debated and passed with extended sitting days Wednesday and Thursday. The House has been mired in a debate since late September, due to an ongoing filibuster by the Opposition Conservatives. The Tories are demanding the government turn over unredacted documents to the RCMP about misspending at a green technology fund. The Conservatives insist that debate will continue until the documents are given to the RCMP or the NDP join them and the Bloc Québécois to vote non-confidence in the minority government. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week that both the GST holiday and the $250 cheques are aimed at helping people struggling with the cost of living. The benefit payments would be issued to an estimated 18.7 million Canadians in the spring at a cost of around $4.7 billion. The government has been resistant to calls to expand who gets that money, but some Liberal MPs said earlier on Wednesday that they were open to the idea. Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Marcus Powlowski said if the government can afford to include seniors in the payments, it absolutely should. “If you’re a senior and living on $15,000 to $20,000 a year and you don’t get the $250, and someone making $150,000 gets the $250, yeah I’d be ticked off. I understand that, and it’s a matter of if we can afford that, absolutely,” he said after the weekly caucus meeting. Milton MP Adam van Koeverden said about one million working seniors would receive the money, but more could be done. “I would love to see more ambition to support seniors who need a little bit of extra help,” he said. “I also think that the conversation that we had today was great and more conversations on affordability are really, really necessary because look, our economy is doing well and that’s not a sentiment that’s broadly felt.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called the GST measure a “tiny, two-month tax trick” in question period and said if Trudeau cared about affordability he’d get rid of the carbon tax. The sales tax break will include provincial sales taxes in the four Atlantic provinces and Ontario, which harmonized their sales taxes with the federal government. It means the tax break in Atlantic Canada will be15 per cent and in Ontario 13 per cent, while in other provinces it will be less unless those governments choose to match it. New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have asked for compensation from Ottawa to cover their lost revenues from that, while Newfoundland and Labrador has not. Nova Scotia was in the midst of an election when the GST measure was floated, which concluded Tuesday. Ontario said Wednesday it will match the GST break and not seek compensation, however many items on the federal list were already exempted in Ontario, including children’s clothes. Ford said it will cost his province $1 billion to match all the exemptions. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 27, 2024.None

Falcons drafting Penix no longer a head-scratcher with rookie QB shining in place of benched Cousins It was the most surprising first-round pick in a long time when the Atlanta Falcons chose Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall selection in the NFL draft last April. That came just six weeks after the Falcons had signed free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal with $100 million in guarantees. But that move is no longer a head-scratcher after Penix's solid starting debut in place of a benched and turnover-prone Cousins. Glaser said before last Thursday’s game between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers that doing her “Late Hits” segment was a no-brainer following her success at the Brady roast. Leaving Thunder, Bucks off the NBA's Christmas game list has those teams feeling snubbed Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference and has a MVP candidate in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Milwaukee has the NBA’s leading scorer in Giannis Antetokounmpo. They were the teams that made their way to the NBA Cup final. By any measure, they’re both very good teams. And neither will play on Christmas Day this year. Bah, humbug. The NBA faces the same challenge every summer, figuring out which 10 teams will get the honor of playing on Christmas Day. But the Bucks and Thunder are right to feel snubbed. Heat lose guard Dru Smith for remainder of season with torn Achilles Miami Heat guard Dru Smith has suffered another season-ending injury, this one a torn Achilles in his left leg. It is the third time that Smith has had a season cut short since February 2022. Smith got hurt Monday night in Miami’s 110-95 win over Brooklyn. The Achilles tear was the preliminary diagnosis once he left the court for evaluation, and an MRI exam on Tuesday confirmed the severity of the injury. This injury comes 13 months after he was lost for most of the 2023-24 season with a right knee injury. Smith also saw his 2021-22 season in the G League cut short by a knee injury.Davis scores 15, Southern Illinois knocks off Florida Tech 81-54The Bruins knocked off South Carolina on Sunday to rise to the top of the polls and are out to a 5-0 start.
