And instead of wondering if their quarterback is “the guy” to stake the franchise, like the Bears with rookie Caleb Williams, the Niners are trying to figure out how much to pay the quarterback on whom they’ll stake the franchise. That’s totally different! But, hey, the Niners will be at home on Sunday. That has to count for something. Ok, the margins between these two teams might be tighter than initially expected, but this Niners’ season still matters. If not the quixotic quest for the playoffs, then as a testament to quality for players and coaches and a momentum starter for the 2025 season. “Just flush the things that have happened. Don’t worry about what has happened in the past,” George Kittle said this week. “Flush it, try to be your best self, and just move forward because we still have a lot of great players on this team that can all make really special plays. And all it takes is a spark to get the boys going, and then after that, we’ll see what can happen.” This is the beauty of the NFL — every game has meaning, even if neither team should have any interest in actually playing the game. And for all the conversation around the Niners tanking for a good draft pick, wouldn’t it be better to pull it together and play — for the first time all season — some solid football final weeks, making the Seahawks and Cardinals — who need a playoff berth more than the Niners — sweat until the very end, and put a dent in the notion that this team’s stock is in a tailspin? IT WAS a day to forget for Cowes Sports and East Cowes Vics, but Newport continued their fine unbeaten run with a draw, despite the disappointment of conceding two goals late on. But the Islanders will be kicking themselves they did not take all three points. After nine minutes, a Fleetlands defender deliberately handballed as Joe Butcher charged in on goal and was given a straight red card. Up against ten men, Newport took advantage of having the extra man. They are enrolling thousands of dogs, goats, and other farmyard animals – as well as a wide range of wildlife – in studies that will monitor their movements from space. The programme uses tiny transmitters that are being fitted to mammals, birds and insects. The detailed movements of these creatures will then be monitored from a dedicated satellite to be launched next year. The aim is not just to study how they react to imminent natural events like volcanic eruptions but to gain new insights into migration, the spread of diseases among animals and the impact of the climate crisis, say researchers. “Ultimately, we hope to launch a fleet of around six satellites and establish a global observation network that will not only provide details of wildlife movements and animal health across the planet but reveal how creatures respond to natural phenomena like earthquakes,” said the project leader, Martin Wikelski, of the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour in Germany. The value of studying tagged animals in this latter area has already been demonstrated in early experiments in Sicily on the slopes of Mount Etna, said Wikelski last week. “We have found the behaviour of goats is pretty good at predicting large volcanic eruptions.” Sensors have shown the animals become nervous before an eruption and refuse to move to higher pastures that they would normally be happy to visit. “They know beforehand what is coming. We don’t how they do it, but they do,” said Wikelski. Similarly, researchers have monitored dogs, sheep and other farm animals on the Abruzzo mountains outside Rome and found that they also reacted in ways that predicted seven out of eight major earthquakes in the region over the past 12 years. Tiny digital transmitters – using small lithium batteries – and cheap and plentiful minuscule GPS devices have made it possible to make tags that are only a few grams in weight. “We are going from where we couldn’t really track most vertebrate species on the planet to flipping it,” Michigan University ecologist Scott Yanco told . “We are now able to track most things.” Understanding how creatures react to geological changes is only one area of interest in that revolution, added Wikelski. “For instance, we can survey wildlife health from space,” he said. An example is provided by electronic ear tags – fitted with tiny 30g accelerometers – that have been attached to wild boar. From changes in an animal’s movements, these show that if a boar develops African swine fever – a highly contagious virus – it spreads easily between wild boar and domestic pigs. Knowing when a disease outbreak occurs in the wild could be important for curbing the disease’s impact on farms, say researchers. “This is a gamechanger for wildlife disease monitoring,” said Kevin Morelle, a scientist based at the Max Planck Institute. The technology should also help scientists to understand the processes that drive migrations. Transmitters have been fitted to creatures as small as death’s-head hawkmoths, and their movements could soon reveal the mysteries that lie behind the 2,000-mile migrations they make between Europe and Africa every year. “Similarly, we will be able to study animal populations to determine how they are responding to habitat changes triggered by global warming,” said Wikelski. Icarus had originally been scheduled to be in full operation several years ago when the team began working with Russian scientists to use a radio telescope on the International Space Station to monitor tagged animals. “After the invasion of Ukraine we decided to halt that cooperation,” said Wikelski. As a replacement, the team has built a small satellite called the Icarus CubeSat, which is set for launch next year. “After that, we will scale up our operations until we have around six CubeSats and a permanent system for monitoring animals as they move and migrate across the world,” said Wikelski. “That should provide us with a massive amount of data about the way animals behave.”

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals Scotland (CILIPS) has written to Finance Secretary Shona Robison warning of cuts at a level "never seen before". A number of cash-strapped local authorities have proposed permanent closures, staff cuts and reduction in opening hours. Libraries earmarked for closure include 13 in Aberdeenshire, seven in Moray and five in Perth and Kinross. Councils say fewer people are using libraries and they are accessing books and information in new ways. However, six facilities were saved in North Lanarkshire in October, after the council reversed an earlier decision to close them. Sean McNamara, director of CILIPS, said the level of cuts was "something we've never seen before in Scotland". He described the council proposals as "uncharted territory". Councils have a legal obligation to provide library services. They have suggested mitigations, such as click-and-collect services and mobile libraries, as an alternative way of delivering library provisions. But Mr McNamara considers these useful add-ons, not adequate replacements to libraries staffed by professional librarians. He said: "Losing these libraries as well as losing opening hours in different parts of the country would have a huge impact. "It would go against a lot of the Scottish government priorities at the moment - eradicating child poverty, economic growth and tackling the climate emergency "All of these things libraries play a key part in." Say what you will about the Niners (I’ve said it all by now), but at least they’re not possibly starting former Seahawk special teamer Travis Homer at running back Sunday—no, they’ll have rookie Issac Guerendo in the backfield. And while Bears fans wondered if interim head coach Thomas Brown (who was promoted to offensive coordinator 17 days prior) would fulfill his new gig from the booth, the Niners haven’t dealt with coaching-from-the-booth issues for over a year. And instead of wondering if their quarterback is “the guy” to stake the franchise, like the Bears with rookie Caleb Williams, the Niners are trying to figure out how much to pay the quarterback on whom they’ll stake the franchise. Whatever lie the 49ers need to tell themselves to get up for this game needs to be said. The Niners’ best might not be all that great anymore, but it’s time for that best to show itself. Great players and teams are self-motivated, after all. Consider this the 2025 preseason, folks. The aim is not just to study how they react to imminent natural events like volcanic eruptions but to gain new insights into migration, the spread of diseases among animals and the impact of the climate crisis, say researchers. “Ultimately, we hope to launch a fleet of around six satellites and establish a global observation network that will not only provide details of wildlife movements and animal health across the planet but reveal how creatures respond to natural phenomena like earthquakes,” said the project leader, Martin Wikelski, of the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour in Germany. The value of studying tagged animals in this latter area has already been demonstrated in early experiments in Sicily on the slopes of Mount Etna, said Wikelski last week. “We have found the behaviour of goats is pretty good at predicting large volcanic eruptions.” Sensors have shown the animals become nervous before an eruption and refuse to move to higher pastures that they would normally be happy to visit. “They know beforehand what is coming. We don’t how they do it, but they do,” said Wikelski. Similarly, researchers have monitored dogs, sheep and other farm animals on the Abruzzo mountains outside Rome and found that they also reacted in ways that predicted seven out of eight major earthquakes in the region over the past 12 years. Stories of or eruptions are not new. The Greek historian Thucydides claimed that rats, dogs, snakes and weasels deserted the city of Helice just before an earthquake struck in 373BC. Similarly, the 1975 Haicheng earthquake in China occurred after snakes and rats were witnessed leaving their burrows. Why these is less clear. “During the build-up to an earthquake, tectonic plates slide across each other under enormous pressures, and that throws out ions from the rocks into the air. The animals may be reacting to that,” said Wikelski, the founder of the (Icarus), an international collaboration involving teams of scientists across the globe. Icarus has become possible because of a revolution in tagging technology. Tiny digital transmitters – using small lithium batteries – and cheap and plentiful minuscule GPS devices have made it possible to make tags that are only a few grams in weight. “We are going from where we couldn’t really track most vertebrate species on the planet to flipping it,” Michigan University ecologist Scott Yanco told . “We are now able to track most things.” Understanding how creatures react to geological changes is only one area of interest in that revolution, added Wikelski. “For instance, we can survey wildlife health from space,” he said. An example is provided by electronic ear tags – fitted with tiny 30g accelerometers – that have been attached to wild boar. From changes in an animal’s movements, these show that if a boar develops African swine fever – a highly contagious virus – it spreads easily between wild boar and domestic pigs. Knowing when a disease outbreak occurs in the wild could be important for curbing the disease’s impact on farms, say researchers. “This is a gamechanger for wildlife disease monitoring,” said Kevin Morelle, a scientist based at the Max Planck Institute. The technology should also help scientists to understand the processes that drive migrations. Transmitters have been fitted to creatures as small as death’s-head hawkmoths, and their movements could soon reveal the mysteries that lie behind the 2,000-mile migrations they make between Europe and Africa every year. “Similarly, we will be able to study animal populations to determine how they are responding to habitat changes triggered by global warming,” said Wikelski. Icarus had originally been scheduled to be in full operation several years ago when the team began working with Russian scientists to use a radio telescope on the International Space Station to monitor tagged animals. “After the invasion of Ukraine we decided to halt that cooperation,” said Wikelski. As a replacement, the team has built a small satellite called the Icarus CubeSat, which is set for launch next year. “After that, we will scale up our operations until we have around six CubeSats and a permanent system for monitoring animals as they move and migrate across the world,” said Wikelski. “That should provide us with a massive amount of data about the way animals behave.”

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals Scotland (CILIPS) has written to Finance Secretary Shona Robison warning of cuts at a level "never seen before". A number of cash-strapped local authorities have proposed permanent closures, staff cuts and reduction in opening hours. Libraries earmarked for closure include 13 in Aberdeenshire, seven in Moray and five in Perth and Kinross. Councils say fewer people are using libraries and they are accessing books and information in new ways. However, six facilities were saved in North Lanarkshire in October, after the council reversed an earlier decision to close them. Sean McNamara, director of CILIPS, said the level of cuts was "something we've never seen before in Scotland". He described the council proposals as "uncharted territory". Councils have a legal obligation to provide library services. They have suggested mitigations, such as click-and-collect services and mobile libraries, as an alternative way of delivering library provisions. But Mr McNamara considers these useful add-ons, not adequate replacements to libraries staffed by professional librarians. He said: "Losing these libraries as well as losing opening hours in different parts of the country would have a huge impact. "It would go against a lot of the Scottish government priorities at the moment - eradicating child poverty, economic growth and tackling the climate emergency "All of these things libraries play a key part in." Several campaign groups have been fighting against proposed closures in various areas, with the most recent protest taking place in Moray. "It's offering some real hope and it shows how much the Scottish public value the libraries," Mr McNamara said. Richard Rutnagur is a part of Save Our Rural Libraries, a group formed by residents from Auchterarder, Birnam, Comrie and Scone. They are trying to stop the closure of five libraries in Perth and Kinross. Mr Rutnagur thinks councils see library services as an easy target. He said: "Superficially, there are less book transactions and borrowings because people have e-books, people consume more stuff digitally. "That traditional model of book-lending is an out of date way of looking at libraries and if you just go on that data, you miss the point. He thinks that, for the elderly widower, these visits are a way of retaining independence and stimulation. "It becomes so much more than just a transaction of our books," he said. The campaigners have appealed to Perth and Kinross Council to halt the closure plans until its budget and the Scottish government's budget are approved. They say proposed extra money allocated to councils, along with a council tax increase, could be used to keep the at-risk facilities open. Speaking after a meeting of Perth and Kinross Council, where a three-year council tax increase strategy was passed, council leader Grant Laing said: "I believe that the approach we are taking locally will give us the flexibility to reconsider difficult decisions that we have made in the past." He considered library provisions to be one of these "difficult decisions". He said the planned council tax rise and the extra funding from Scottish government might give "an opportunity to focus on local needs rather than just where we can make savings". However, Mr Laing said, there were areas that would be prioritised when budgetary decisions were made, such as health and social care services. The council's final budget proposal will be voted on at a meeting in February 2025. Other local authorities that have proposed cuts to library provisions are consulting the residents or evaluating their feedback. It plans to run a network of 18 remaining libraries alongside doorstep deliveries, click and collect and other digital services. Moray council, where seven libraries are earmarked for closure, said it received "an exceptional" response to the recent public consultation. The residents' feedback will be analysed and reported to councillors, who are expected to make a decision on the current proposals to close seven libraries early in the new year. The Scottish government has been approached for comment. Outlining her plans for next year's budget on Wednesday, Finance Secretary Shona Robison allocated what she called a "record" investment of more than £15bn to local authorities. She said a proposed £1bn uplift in funding for councils should prevent them from introducing any "large" tax increases.
