In an unprecedented move, South Korean investigators have requested an arrest warrant for the suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol, following the controversial imposition of martial law earlier this month. The warrant marks the first time that such action has been taken against an incumbent president, amid allegations of insurrection. The attempted raid on the presidential office by police as part of the investigation was unsuccessful, highlighting tensions in the probe involving the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials. A Seoul court is set to decide the outcome of the arrest warrant request. The nation, shocked by the brief implementation of martial law, now awaits a Constitutional Court trial to determine whether Yoon will be reinstated or permanently removed from office. International partners have expressed concern over the political turmoil in South Korea, a longstanding democracy. Winners of 3 straight, UTEP takes aim at short-handed LouisvilleMamata to visit Sandeshkhali on Dec 30 - the first since controversyHow can we control the AI that is exploiting us? Gary Marcus has provided a book that lists the problems, flaws, and threats of AI and what, considering these, our demands should be, and how we might meet them. Marcus is an expert on AI and has spoken to the US Senate judiciary subcommittee on AI oversight. He presents a soft-core socialist view: AI should be for everyone, under certain regulations, that are good for all. Considering what is actually happening, this comes across as hard-core radicalism. Leaving aside the threat that AI poses to jobs and creativity, as well as the way it lubricates neoliberalism, Marcus enumerates the problems as these: • The particular form of AI technology is use now, Generative AI, is deeply flawed. • The AI that companies are building is irresponsible. • Generative AI is wildly overhyped because it is easier to raise money if corporations do so. • We are headed toward an AI oligarchy, with way too much power. “Right now, we are building the wrong kind of AI,” says Marcus, “an AI — and an AI industrial complex — that we can’t trust.” Generative AI is a particular approach to AI that uses large amounts of data to make predictions, typically about what things humans will do in some context. Impressive as it might appear, given the cluster of computers and network at its disposal, it’s no better than guesswork plus Google. Large language models, on which Generative AI depends, record the statistics of words, but they don’t understand the concepts they use or the people they describe. Fact and fiction are not distinguished. There is no fact-check. Here we encounter, as we might have already in Philip K Dick, the hallucinations, inconsistent reasoning, and unreliability of AI. He then enumerates the 12 biggest immediate threats of Generative AI including deliberate, automated, mass-produced political disinformation; market and stockmarket manipulation; intellectual property taken without consent and environmental costs. Marcus elaborates carefully on each of these, but overall this points to what has been called the Great Data Heist, a theft of intellectual property that will (unless stopped by government intervention or citizen action) lead to a huge transfer of wealth — from almost all of us — to a tiny number of companies. Which is to say that AI companies steal creative and intellectual work to use for AI under the pretext that AI is good for the future of human. They call it “Techno-salvation.” What happens to the naysayers? Blacklisted. Marc Andreessen, a fabulously wealthy California-tech ideologue, wrote a “Techno-Optimist Manifesto,” with a McCarthy-like list of enemies: “Our enemy is stagnation. Our enemy is anti-merit, anti-ambition, anti-striving, anti-achievement, anti-greatness, etc.” He included a call against communism, complaining of the “continuous howling from communists and Luddites.” It’s the old complaint, in a new dress, against regulation, taxation, and workers’ rights. Also, to generate a single image takes roughly as much energy as charging a phone. Generative AI is likely to be used billions of times a day. An International Energy Agency forecast predicts that “Global electricity demand from data centres, cryptocurrencies and AI could more than double over the next three years, adding the equivalent of Germany’s entire power needs.” No-one votes for the Tech companies that are, by now, bigger than nation states, and beyond the reach of regulation, let alone democracy. As OpenAI have trained their models on all the data it can scrape — which is to say, massive amounts of content and miscontent, a lot of it copyrighted with no compensation to the artists or writers who created it — and because regulation and appropriate governance is resisted tooth and nail, Marcus proposes a list of “things to insist on” to achieve “governance of AI” including no use of copyrighted work without compensation, no training without consent, no coercive appropriation of data, and standards of transparency, among others. He concludes with his most provocative suggestions taking the form of suggestions how we, as citizens, can make a difference beginning with the demand that members of civil society be at every table. He advocates action, such as a “digital strike,” and civil organisation that allow citizens — and not just well-endowed political parties — to have a stronger voice. How can we promote such ideas when intellectual arguments have given way to 140 characters, soundbites and TikTok videos, and a culture of “engagement farming,” with Generative AI–written articles that are starting to pollute science, education, politics, culture and arts, as well as personal relationships? The answer, as usual, is with hard work, solidarity, and community. Jon Baldwin is Senior Lecturer, School of Computing and Digital Media, London Metropolitan University
There is no doubting that Adam Keefe’s name will ultimately be listed alongside those who have made significant contributions to Giants’ history as they celebrate 25 seasons in existence. Whether any of the players on Keefe’s 2024-25 roster and which are worthy of the status of Hall of Famers may be determined over the next four months. Winning the Elite League title is always the No.1 target in Belfast — it has been since Dave Whistle, one of the inaugural Hall of Fame members, led the Giants to their first title in 2002. In a special year the motivation has an added layer. “That’s huge obviously,” said Keefe of chasing the title in the Giant’s 25th anniversary campaign. “We put a lot of stock on all the owners who have done there job to keep this team here and then the Odyssey Trust who have solidified the team and the investment that they have put into us, we want to reward that. “We want to reward our fanbase for what they are doing for us, specifically in the last two years the crows are fantastic and people are turning up, so we want to reward them.” Keefe’s stamp on the Giants is indelible. Two League titles as a player, the second as captain, have been added to with three more being won under his coaching, including a treble-winning campaign in 2023. The biggest expectation to bring more glory comes from within the 40-year-old, who has won eight trophies as Giants coach, as the team is as much part of him as he is part of the Giants. “It’s 13 years for me, minus the Covid year,” said Keefe, who was signed by Doug Christiansen in 2011 “For lack of a better term, I bleed teal and I take a lot of the history on board. “There are people did a lot of work before I got here and before these guys got here to make this place what it is and that’s not lost on me. “Some of them are still here and some of them have moved on. “This is a great place to play hockey, I got to enjoy it for six years myself and now I’ve got to enjoy seven years as a coach as well. This is my home now and it’s not just a job for me and it’s not just a job for the coaching staff, we take this pretty seriously and we want to reward everyone. “Yes, it’s a special season for us, we are excited for it.” The Giants enter a frenetic period where they play four games between now and the end of 2024, starting away to Glasgow Clan this evening, just four points behind the Cardiff Devils, with two matches in hand. The Sheffield Steelers won the League with 91 points last season — the most in a 54-game season since the Giants hit 95 more than a decade ago — and the way things are shaping up it might take another record-breaking campaign for whoever comes out as champions this time around. “Ultimately Sheffield came in and set a new bar last year. We did it the year before that, they knocked it down and they set their own,” said Keefe. “Now it’s our turn — or somebody else’s or Sheffield’s to hold on to that. We want to be that team who knocks that bar down and pushes through.”None

Former US President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100. He was the oldest living President of all time and was the third US President to visit India. Carter died at home in Plains, Georgia. He had been suffering from an aggressive form of melanoma, a skin cancer, with tumours that had spread to his liver and brain. He had stopped medical treatment and was under hospice care at home. His death was announced by the Carter Centre in Atlanta. "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love," said Chip Carter, the former President's son. "My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs." President Carter, a Democrat, had served one term from 1977 to 1981 and was voted out of office despite such accomplishments as the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, which proved to be insufficient to overcome the disappointment over a slumping economy at home and the Iran crisis abroad. He went on to carve out an extraordinary post-presidency life and won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2002 for, the prize citation said, "his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development". His wife of 77 years, Rosalyn Carter died in November 2023, at 96. Carter was the third US President to visit India, after Dwight Eisenhower in 1959 and Richard Nixon in 1969. He was accompanied on this visit in 1978 by the first lady. Carter had met then President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy and Prime Minister Morarji Desai and addressed the Parliament. A village he had visited then in Gurugram (then Gurgaon) was named Carterpuri and retains that name. "The atmosphere throughout the visit was friendly, and the President's reception by the Indian public was enthusiastic," the US Embassy in New Delhi had reported to the State Department in a telegram published by the US Office of the Historian. "It is clear that the President established an excellent personal rapport with the Prime Minister. The editorial comment, in the wake of the visit, while generally reflecting the atmosphere described above, also expressed some reservations. For the most part, these focused on the differences in the nuclear field." Carter's mother, Lilian Carter, had however visited India much before he did. She went to India as a member of the Peace Corps at the age of 68 and returned in 1977 to represent the US at the funeral of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. "My mother, who loves this nation and its people very deeply, has told me of the warmth and friendship of the Indian people," President Carter had said in his remarks to Indian lawmakers. "She experienced it in her years of service here and, again, a few months ago in a time of sorrow when she represented me as President and the people of the US at the funeral of your former President." Why Insider Activity Matters in Finance Insider transactions should be considered alongside other factors when making investment decisions, as they can offer important insights. In the realm of legality, an "insider" is defined as any officer, director, or beneficial owner holding more than ten percent of a company's equity securities under Section 12 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. This includes executives in the c-suite and major hedge funds. These insiders are required to disclose their transactions through a Form 4 filing, to be submitted within two business days of the transaction. Notably, when a company insider makes a new purchase, it is considered an indicator of their positive expectations for the stock. Conversely, insider sells may not necessarily signal a bearish stance on the stock and can be motivated by various factors. Exploring Key Transaction Codes Delving into transactions, investors typically prioritize those unfolding in the open market, as precisely outlined in Table I of the Form 4 filing. A P in Box 3 indicates a purchase, while S signifies a sale. President Carter, a Democrat, had served one term from 1977 to 1981 and was voted out of office despite such accomplishments as the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, which proved to be insufficient to overcome the disappointment over a slumping economy at home and the Iran crisis abroad. Transaction code C signals the conversion of an option, and transaction code A denotes a grant, award, or other acquisition of securities from the company.
