President Joe Biden vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have created new judgeships during future presidential administrations Monday night, barring President-elect Donald Trump the opportunity to appoint a maximum of 22 new federal district court judges during his second term. Biden cited House GOP leadership’s decision to delay taking up the legislation until after the election and concerns regarding the motivations behind Republican lawmakers’ support for the bill as his rationale for opposing an expansion of the country’s federal judicial branch, according to a veto statement published on Monday. “S. 4199 would create new judgeships in States where Senators have sought to hold open existing judicial vacancies,” Biden wrote in a statement. “Those efforts to hold open vacancies suggest that concerns about judicial economy and caseload are not the true motivating force behind passage of this bill now.” (RELATED: John Kennedy Says Questioning Biden Judicial Nominees Is ‘Better Than Sex’) Republican Indiana Sen. Todd Young, the primary sponsor of the Judicial Understaffing Delays Getting Emergencies Solved (JUDGES) Act of 2024, torched the Biden administration’s veto announcement in a thread on X on Monday night. “This decision is just another example of why Americans are counting down the days until President Biden leaves the White House,” Young wrote on X. “Issuing this veto is partisan politics at its worst. The JUDGES Act is a fair bill with strong bipartisan support that would have created 66 judgeships over three presidential terms to address our judicial backlog.” This decision is just another example of why Americans are counting down the days until President Biden leaves the White House. https://t.co/6J3iRfaMb3 — Senator Todd Young (@SenToddYoung) December 24, 2024 “The President is more enthusiastic about using his office to provide relief to his family members who received due process than he is about giving relief to the millions of regular Americans who are waiting years for their due process,” Young added. “Biden’s legacy will be ‘pardons for me, no justice for thee.’” The JUDGES Act of 2024 garnered widespread bipartisan support with both Republican and Democratic lawmakers recognizing the need to authorize new federal district court judgeships to aid overworked judges struggling to keep up with population growth and an increasing number of case filings in certain regions across the country. The bill would have allowed Trump to nominate up to 22 new federal district court judges during the next four years and allow for a series of 10 to 11 new judges to be appointed by succeeding presidents every two years until 2035, according to a summary of the legislation from Young. The last time Congress updated the number of federal district court judgeships was 1990. The bill passed the Senate by unanimous consent in August and won the support of 29 Democratic lawmakers in the House following Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s decision to take up the legislation on Dec. 12. Notable Biden allies, including Democratic Delaware Sen. Chris Coons and Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, voiced support for the legislation earlier this year. Coons, an original co-sponsor of the federal judicial branch expansion legislation with Young, lamented Biden’s decision to veto the bill on Monday night. (RELATED: Dem Sen Who Said Biden ‘On Top Of His Game’ In 2024 Deflects And Defends When Fox News Host Presses Him To ‘Reflect’) “ I understand that the president’s view is that to pass it this late in the session and hand the next president 22 judges to confirm is something he doesn’t support,” Coons told POLITICO. “If we could change the date by four years, I know — he told me — if we could change the date, he’d sign it tomorrow.” Coons previously touted the bill’s unanimous passage out of the Senate Judiciary Committee in June. “I’m delighted that the Senate Judiciary Committee has gotten serious about the crisis facing overworked judges across the country today by taking up and advancing my bipartisan JUDGES Act to the Senate floor,” said Coons. “For too long, Congress has failed to add new federal judgeships to keep pace with the rising caseloads around the country, and our nation’s federal courts – especially in Delaware, where there are only four active judgeships – have paid the price.” More than 300 federal judges appointed by both Democratic and Republican administrations called for the passage of the JUDGES Act, according to an op-ed Young wrote for the Washington Post on Dec. 12 advocating for Biden to sign the bill into law following the president’s veto warning . “Biden once again has the opportunity to join Congress in resolving a judicial crisis by signing into law the Judges Act: bipartisan legislation I introduced to increase the number of federal district court judges in the most overworked regions of the country,” Young wrote in the op-ed. “ Hundreds of thousands of Americans are forced to wait years for their federal cases to be heard. Many litigants feel their only option is to settle cases for suboptimal outcomes to provide some certainty. Our justice system is collapsing under the weight of caseloads: Overworked judges are retiring, and the staggering burden discourages high-quality candidates from pursuing the federal judiciary.” GOP lawmakers will likely try to pass similar legislation in the next Congress with Trump in the Oval Office and Republican majorities in the House and Senate. On Friday, Biden celebrated the Senate confirming 235 federal judges during his presidency. It marks the largest number of federal judge confirmations secured during a single presidential term since the 1980s, according to Biden’s statement. TEHRA- The head of Iran's Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) said smartening is the only solution to improve the productivity of mines and mining industries. Mohammad Aghajanlu stated that according to the Leader's order, mining sector has the ability to replace oil sector in the economy, adding: “To achieve this, this sector must be equipped with the necessary tools.” Iran's mining sector plays a pivotal role in the country’s economy, contributing significantly to non-oil export revenues. With over 68 types of minerals, including large reserves of iron ore, copper, zinc, and rare earth elements, the nation ranks among the world’s top 15 mineral-rich countries. The country boasts more than 10,000 active mines, employing hundreds of thousands of workers directly and indirectly. Key mining hubs such as Yazd, Kerman, and East Azerbaijan provinces are home to extensive operations, including extraction and processing facilities for metals and minerals critical to domestic industries and global markets. Recent years have seen substantial investments in the sector to boost production capacity and modernize infrastructure. The government has also prioritized the development of downstream industries, particularly in steel and aluminum production, to maximize value addition and reduce reliance on raw material exports. Moreover, Iran’s strategic location, with access to both the Persian Gulf and Caspian Sea, positions it as a key player in regional and international trade of mining products. Despite challenges posed by international sanctions, the mining industry continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability, leveraging domestic resources and fostering collaborations with friendly nations. With the ongoing focus on sustainability and technological innovation, the mining sector is poised to maintain its upward trajectory and further cement its status as a cornerstone of Iran's economic development. During an earlier this month, Owens − who was promoting his new film, − said he is still struggling to make a living. "I struggle every day to make my ends meet," the 63-year-old Owens said. "People have a false impression of what the average, what I call 'middle-class actor' makes, and their ability to make a living in the industry." The average salary for an actor was about $62,000 in 2023, according to the , although it's unclear exactly what Owens makes. This included actors who participate in theatrical performances, in addition to television, radio, video and film productions. Owens shares the screen in "Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza" with Tommy Davidson. Directed by Noel Calloway, the family-friendly Christmas movie is about a substitute teacher, known as Mr. Santa, arriving days before a high school's Christmas show. Popularly known for playing Elvin Tibideaux on "The Cosby Show," Owens made headlines in 2018 after a grocery store in New Jersey. During his , Owens said he was recognized in public more often following the Trader Joe's news than he was while actively playing in "The Cosby Show" during the 1980s and '90s. He also unveiled during his that he had quit working at Trader Joe's right after the shopper snapped his photo and before the news broke, because he anticipated the reaction. In Brief OpenAI announced that its Board of Directors is evaluating its corporate structure to better align with its mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Artificial intelligence research organization announced that its Board of Directors is currently assessing its corporate structure to better align with its mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. OpenAI currently operates with both a non-profit and a for-profit entity. Moving forward, the plan is to maintain both structures, with the for-profit entity’s success helping to fund and sustain the non-profit, positioning it more effectively to support the broader mission. OpenAI views this mission as a critical challenge, one that requires balancing the advancement of AI’s capabilities, safety, and positive global impact. As OpenAI looks ahead to 2025, the organization recognizes the need to evolve beyond a research lab and startup, aiming to become a more enduring company. The Board of Directors, with guidance from external legal and financial advisors, is focused on determining the best structural approach to advance OpenAI’s mission. The primary goals include selecting a non-profit/for-profit model that supports long-term success. The plan is to convert the existing for-profit entity into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), a structure commonly used by other companies which balances shareholder interests with public benefit considerations. This move will help OpenAI raise capital while maintaining its mission-driven focus. Another objective is to make the non-profit sustainable. The proposed structure would ensure that the non-profit becomes one of the best-resourced in history. This would involve the non-profit holding shares in the PBC, with the value of those shares determined by independent financial advisors. This approach would increase the resources available, multiplying the impact of donor contributions. A key aim is to better equip each part of the organization to fulfill its role. OpenAI’s current structure limits the ‘ ability to consider the interests of those funding the mission and restricts the non-profit’s ability to do more than control the for-profit entity. Under the new model, the PBC would manage OpenAI’s business operations, while the non-profit would focus on charitable initiatives in fields like healthcare, education, and science, supported by its own leadership and staff. The organization highlights that with the world transitioning to a new economic infrastructure, including energy, land use, chips, data centers, data, AI models, and systems, it aims to evolve alongside these developments. OpenAI is dedicated to advancing research and development in , which is a form of AI designed to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a variety of tasks in a manner similar to human intelligence. It has gained attention for its generative models, particularly the popular chatbot technology, ChatGPT. Recently, OpenAI improvements to its O1 model and introduced ChatGPT Pro, a new subscription plan that offers users enhanced access to OpenAI’s premium models and tools. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — said Saturday he had an “excellent conversation” with at his Mar-a-Lago club after the president-elect’s threat on two of America’s leading trade partners raised alarms in and . It was unclear, as Trudeau headed back to Canada from Florida, whether the conversation had alleviated Trump’s concerns. A person familiar with the details of the leaders’ hastily arranged meeting Friday night said it was a “positive wide-ranging dinner that lasted three hours.” The official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said topics included trade, border security, fentanyl, defense, Ukraine, NATO, China, the Mideast and pipelines, as well as the the Group of Seven meeting in Canada next year. The Republican president-elect has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico if the countries don’t stop what he called the flow of drugs and migrants across their borders. He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products from Canada and as one of his first executive orders when he takes office in January. As he was leaving his West Palm Beach hotel, Trudeau stopped briefly to answer a reporter’s question about the dinner meeting, saying it was “an excellent conversation.” Trump’s transition team did not respond to questions about what the leaders had discussed. Trump, during his first term as president, once called Trudeau but it was the prime minister who was the first G7 leader to visit Trump since the Nov. 5 election. “Tariffs are a crucial issue for Canada and a bold move was in order. Perhaps it was a risk, but a risk worth taking,” Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. Among those at the dinner were Howard Lutnick, Trump’s pick for commerce secretary; North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, in line to lead the Interior Department; and Mike Waltz, Trump’s choice to be his national security adviser. Accompanying Trudeau were Canada’s public safety minister, Dominic LeBlanc, whose responsibilities include border security, and Katie Telford, Trudeau’s chief of staff. Trudeau had said earlier Friday that he would resolve the tariffs issue by talking to Trump. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said a day earlier after speaking with Trump that she is confident will be averted. Trudeau said Trump got elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries but now he’s talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products including potatoes from Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada. “It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it,” Trudeau said before his leaving for Florida. “Our responsibility is to point out that he would not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but he would actually be raising prices for Americans citizens as well and hurting American industry and business,” he added. To Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, Trump “doesn’t need convincing that new tariffs on Canadian products would not be in U.S. interests. He knows that, but cannot say it because it would detract from what he has said publicly. His goal is to project the image that he gets action when he talks.” Those tariffs could essentially blow up the North American trade pact that Trump’s team negotiated during his first term. Trudeau noted they were able to successfully renegotiate the deal, which he calls a “win win” for both countries. Trump made the tariff threat Monday while citing an influx of migrants entering the country illegally, even though the numbers at the Canadian border pale in comparison to those at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump also spoke about fentanyl from Mexico and Canada, even though seizures from the Canadian border are few in comparison to the Mexican border. Canadian officials say lumping Canada in with Mexico is unfair but say they are ready to make new investments in border security. When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term in office, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced against the U.S. in a response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US $2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. ___ Gillies reported from Toronto. House rejects Democratic efforts to force release of Matt Gaetz ethics report WASHINGTON (AP) — The House shut down Democrats' efforts Thursday to release the long-awaited ethics report into former Rep. Farnoush Amiri, The Associated Press Dec 5, 2024 3:27 PM Dec 5, 2024 3:35 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message Matt Gaetz talks before President-elect Donald Trump speaks during an America First Policy Institute gala at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, in Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon) WASHINGTON (AP) — The House shut down Democrats' efforts Thursday to release the long-awaited ethics report into former Rep. Matt Gaetz , pushing the fate of any resolution to the yearslong investigation of sexual misconduct allegations into further uncertainty. The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was the sole Republican to support the effort. Most Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Shortly before the votes took place, Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers only have a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg , a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison. ___ Farnoush Amiri, The Associated Press See a typo/mistake? Launching an all-out offensive on the issue, the Congress today took out protest march in several states demanding the resignation of Amit Shah. The grand-old-party has announced to take up the issue of "insult" to B R Ambedkar at its CWC meeting to be held in Karnataka's Belagavi from December 26 and has promised a "strong follow-up" action. "Over the last week, Congress party workers all over India have been participating in agitation. Today, all district committees are holding demonstrations and will be submitting a memorandum to the President of India, through the district collectors, demanding the resignation of home minister Amit Shah," Congress general secretary organisation K C Venugopal said. In Lucknow, Bahujan Samaj Party workers held protests in parts of the state demanding Amit Shah's resignation. BSP chief Mayawati had earlier described Shah's remarks as deeply hurtful to Ambedkar's followers. Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party has announced to organize 'PDA Charcha (discussion)' programme across all assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh from December 26 to January 25. The initiative aims to safeguard the Constitution and propagate the ideals of Dr BR Ambedkar, party chief spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said. "The statement made by the Union home minister in Parliament was 'disrespectful' to Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution," the party said in a statement. The Samajwadi Party contends that dominant, feudal forces have historically opposed Ambedkar's principles of equality, as these challenged their traditional authority and sought to empower oppressed and underprivileged communities, it said. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh also demanded either resignation or apology from Amit Shah and said the BJP needs to clarify its stand. "Union Home Minister Amit Shah insulted Dr BR Ambedkar and the spirit of the Constitution. Many parties including TMC, condemned and opposed the statement of Union home minister Amit Shah. He should reconsider his statement, beg your pardon or resign. Every party including TMC is protesting and after all this BJP is under pressure. They (BJP) have to take some stand and clarify their stand with the nation," Kunal Ghosh said. The BJP responded strongly to the opposition attack and launched a coordinated counter offensive. Almost all BJP chief ministers came out in defence of Amit Shah and attacked the Congress for distorting the statement of Union home minister. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath demanded an apology from Congress for continuously insulting Bharat Ratna Baba Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and said that the Bharatiya Janata Party has worked to build the country of Baba Saheb's dreams. The UP CM said the Congress has a "history of insulting" Dalits and the underprivileged in the country. Last week, Parliament saw dramatic scenes following Amit Shah's remarks. There were parallel protests from both the treasury and the opposition benches. The protests outside Parliament led to a huge scuffle between the two sides with two BJP MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, sustaining injuries. Both parties alleged that their party members had been pushed around. Later, Delhi Police registered an FIR based on BJP's comlaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is also the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha. A delegation of Congress MPs, including women MPs, also approached Parliament Street Police Station, accusing BJP leaders of misbehaving with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge during the scuffle in Parliament premises. With elections in Delhi scheduled early next year, the opposition will continue to rake up the issue to put the BJP on the defensive. Moreover, with the Congress making it clear that it will not stop protesting till Amit Shah resigns and apologises, we may continue to see this controversy play out for some more time.
