Trump’s tariffs in his first term did little to alter the economy, but this time could be differentIt’s nearing Saturday, so it’s time for another round of picks against the spread. Last week was a second straight 5-5 week after the Vols caved late to spoil a possible winning week. That mark puts my season record at 61-57-2 for the season. Not sure why. Yeah, Wake stinks, but they can still score points, and I am completely in show me mode with Miami’s extremely underperforming defense. The Canes get theirs on offense, probably reach the mid-40s at least. But another pain in the ass day from the defense sends Miami to Syracuse with still just one loss on the resume, but still way too many questions on Lance Guidry’s side of the ball. UConn at SYRACUSE +10.5 Speaking of the Cuse, I like where their game is at right now. They won by 8 as 10-point dogs at Cal last weekend. They get it done as a double-digit favorite on Saturday before the Canes come to town. Indiana at OHIO STATE -12 Call this one a gut feeling. I think the Hoosiers are finally about to find out what it’s like to play one of the best teams in college football this year, and it’s going to be a rude awakening. Will Howard and the passing game have a day in Columbus. UTEP +42 at Tennessee The Vols are coming off a deflating loss to Georgia and UTEP’s coach came over from Austin Peay, who gave the Vols fits last season. Too many points here. COLORADO -2.5 at Kansas Both teams are playing well lately, but I’m all in on the Buffaloes right now. They’re on a path to the Big 12 title and CFP, and they keep it rolling this week against the Jayhawks. Ole Miss at FLORIDA +11 The Gators are playing far better football lately, and I think that plus the Swamp creates a challenging environment for the Rebels. Don’t know who wins, but this is competitive. MISSOURI -7.5 at Mississippi State I’m surprised this isn’t more, with Brady Cook set to play. The Bulldogs are absolutely atrocious. Tigers by double digits. ALABAMA -13.5 at Oklahoma The Sooners are an absolute mess, and the Crimson Tide have hit their stride late in the season. This won’t end up close. USC at UCLA; OVER 51.5 points I know USC has had some QB troubles, but man, this game has gone over this mark every year since 2017. There’s just something about this rivalry that screams points, so I’ll go over here. TEXAS A&M -2,5 at Auburn I really think Vegas is trying to tell me something here. I also wonder how focused the Aggies are this week, with Mike Elko even having a slip up by saying focused on Texas instead of Auburn. ODON — A number of communities are holding events to welcome in the holidays. One of the first of the area parades will be the Odon Lighted Christmas Parade on Dec. 2. The event is sponsored by the Odon Business Alliance and Alliance President Morgan Wininger says the parade will reach from one end of town to the other with the parade running from the old high school down Main Street and ending in the park on the west side of town. “The parade starts at 6:30 p.m. The lineup begins around 5:30 p.m. on John Poindexter Street across from Ketcham Memorial,” she said. “Everyone is welcome to participate. You don’t have to register. You just show up and the Odon Fire Department helps line everyone up.” Organizers say the parade has a theme but they don’t require that people adhere to it. “The theme this year is Gingerbread Christmas. We have prizes for the best decorated float,” said Wininger. “We are very excited about it. It brings out a lot of people to Main Street. There are some fun warm things to do out at the park after the parade, put on by The Spirit of Christmas committee.” Officials call the parade a chance to let the people in the area get some closeness heading into Christmas. “It just brings some warmth and happiness to Main Street and it is a way reacquaint the community with what we have to offer locally,” said Wininger. Like in most communities the parade is just a kick-off to even more events. When it ends at the Odon Park that is where the Spirit of Christmas events for the community begins. “We have Santa in the log cabin. People can come to the Pete Sims Building, which is the big metal building. We have hot chocolate and cookies, games and crafts. This year we are have a gingerbread man decorating contest with four different levels. One for pre-k and kindergarten. One for grades one through three, grades four, five and six, and then junior high and high school,” said Spirit of Christmas committee chairman Sue Dart. “The business association will also give away a girl’s bike and a boy’s bike.” The Spirit of Christmas Committee is made up of representatives of several churches in the Odon area. “We try to involve all of the churches because this is our holiday. This is when we celebrate the birth of our Savior. When you get down to it, it is all about Jesus,” said Dart. “Prisoners from Wabash Valley Correctional came in and put up the majority of the lights. The Daviess County inmates are running the extension cords. They play an important part in putting this on.”

Gratitude is something that does not come naturally to children. Typically it needs to be nurtured by parents in order to blossom. As we start to get together for Thanksgiving and the holidays, there will be several opportunities to note things to be grateful for like getting together with family, eating delicious food or receiving presents. When children and adolescents start becoming more grateful, there are a host of positive effects. Sleep improves, blood pressure is lowered, and depression is reduced. Children enhance their emotional health along with their relations with others. Adolescents have higher life satisfaction and greater motivation to improve themselves. Gratitude is a gift that keeps giving throughout one’s life. Young children can start learning about gratitude when their parents talk to them about small moments of joy that occur. This could be on the beauty of a blooming flower or how delicious the chocolate chip cookie tastes. This awareness of being grateful for experiences that bring joy will develop into verbalizing gratitude later on. As children get older, parents can ask them how they feel when they receive something special. This should be done by asking them open-ended questions and not trying to tell them how they should feel. This may make parents realize that some children are not even aware they have experienced or received something that they should be grateful for. Parents who model gratitude themselves tend to raise grateful children. When children demonstrate thoughtfulness or gratitude, parents should recognize it and make it a big deal. This could be when a child gives their sibling a hug when they are down or draws a picture as a present for their parent. By modeling gratitude for children’s actions, parents are helping children develop social and moral awareness. While parents can give children many opportunities to observe and practice gratitude, their children can still appear ungrateful at times. Often this is due to children being caught up in other issues that are more important to them in the moment and they are overlooking the positive experience before them. Rather than be frustrated, parents can ask what might be going on with them which can lead them to what is distracting them from being grateful. It is possible to focus too much on gratitude, which can dilute the meaning behind gratitude or bore children. Parents will need to find the right balance and be flexible in the ways their children exhibit gratitude. Writing thank you notes for presents may be parents’ way of showing gratitude, but children may want to make a TikTok video instead. Gratitude can come in many forms and letting children find their own ways to express themselves makes it more likely to stick as they get older. Thanksgiving launches the holiday season and opportunities to get together with friends and family. It is a great time to start nurturing gratitude in children. This can start with small observations of joy and by asking questions regarding how children feel when they receive a gift. Parents can model gratitude and make sure children receive expressions of gratitude so they can see how it feels to receive it. Gratitude develops slowly and each child will come to it differently. Parents should try not to overdo it and be flexible when children express their gratitude in different ways. In the end, grateful children will experience a host of benefits that will serve them well throughout their lives.
