VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Aidan Bouman threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Javion Phelps with 12 seconds left and South Dakota defeated FCS top-ranked North Dakota State 29-28 on Saturday to claim a share of its first Missouri Valley Football Conference championship. The Coyotes (9-2, 7-1) trailed 28-17 when Bouman threw deep to Jack Martens for a 40-yard touchdown with 3:22 remaining. They got the ball back with 1:16 left and six plays later Bouman was sacked. The Coyotes quickly lined up and Bouman found Phelps alone 2 yards shy of the end zone along the left sideline and he easily scored. South Dakota won its first game against the Bison in Vermillion since a four-overtime thriller in 2002. The Bison had won the last five meetings in the DakotaDome. The Coyotes took a 14-0 lead on two Travis Theis rushing touchdowns but the Bison (10-2, 7-1) tied the game with two scores in the final 2:26 of the first half, a 23-yard pass from Cam Miller to Braylon Henderson and a 3-yard TD run by Miller. Miller scored from 2 yards out late in the third quarter and CharMar Brown completed a 20-play, 99-yard drive that took nearly 11 minutes with a 1-yard score for a 28-17 Bison lead with just over four minutes to go. Bouman was 18-of-30 for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Miller was 9-of-21 passing with one touchdown and he rushed for 82 yards and another score. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was 0.98% lower at 1.39 p.m. ET, falling 422.63 points to 42,903.17. The index is on course to snap a five-session winning streak following a 10-session decline, its worst losing stretch since 1974. The S&P 500 slipped 1.38%, or 83.08 points, to 5,954.51, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.85%, or 371.34 points, to 19,649.01. The sell-off thwarted the seasonal Santa Claus rally, in which stocks traditionally rise during the last five sessions of December and the first two of January. Since 1969, the S&P 500 has climbed 1.3% on average, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. "If nothing else, today is a reminder that just because a Santa Claus rally is a statistical likelihood, it is far from guaranteed," said Steve Sosnick, chief market strategist at Interactive Brokers. Thursday's session hinted at momentum stalling, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posting marginal losses to end multi-session winning runs. Rising U.S. Treasury yields had been catching investors' attention, with the benchmark 10-year note hitting a more than seven-month high in the previous session. The yield hovered close to that mark on Friday, at 4.61%. Higher yields are seen as hampering growth stocks, as they raise borrowing costs for business expansion. These stocks, especially the so-called Magnificent Seven technology megacaps which had been key drivers of the market's 2024 rally, were also caught up in Friday's sell-off. For the second successive day, Tesla led decliners among the group, off 4.4%. Amazon.com, Microsoft and Nvidia also shed more than 2%. All 11 major S&P sectors fell. The worst performers on Friday were the three indexes which have been 2024's leading lights: consumer discretionary, information technology and communication services. The trio were trading between 1.5% and 2.1% lower on the day. "Tech, which has had a tremendous run, is starting to pull back. It is the beginning of a healthy correction that will get focused in on over the next four to eight weeks as we switch administrations," said Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. Despite Friday's travails, all three indexes were set for weekly gains, with the S&P 500 now about 2.3% below its all-time high of 6,099.97 points clinched on Dec. 6. News events helped some stocks to buck the market sell-off. Amedisys gained 4.7% after the home health service provider and insurer UnitedHealth extended the deadline to close their $3.3 billion merger. Lamb Weston climbed 4.1% after a filing showed activist investor Jana Partners is working with a sixth executive to push for changes at the French fry maker, a move which could result in a majority of the company's board being replaced. Trading volumes in this holiday-shortened week have been below the average of the last six months and are likely to remain subdued until Jan. 6. The next major focus for markets will be the December employments report due on Jan. 10. The Minnesota Timberwolves could probably benefit from a holiday break to address the many issues that have led to the team's disappointing 14-14 start. Instead, the Wolves are set to play in front of a national TV audience when they visit the surging Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday. Minnesota dropped its third straight game on Monday in a 117-104 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. The Wolves will look to regroup against the Mavericks, who beat the Portland Trail Blazers 132-108 on Monday for their 14th win in their last 17 games. Minnesota has failed to score 110 points in regulation in 14 straight games and struggled from the start in Monday's loss to Atlanta. The Wolves fell behind 27-9 to begin the game and never recovered. "We couldn't finish around the rim again, turned it over at a high level to start the game, got down," Minnesota coach Chris Finch said. "We start the fourth, and it just became a shot-making contest. We missed about five wide-open shots, and they made theirs at the other end of the floor, and then turnovers hurt us late." Naz Reid scored 23 points off the bench and Julius Randle added 19 to go along with 13 rebounds in the loss to the Hawks. Even with proven scorers such as Anthony Edwards and Randle, the Wolves are 23rd in the NBA with 109.3 points per game. People may not realise that you need a TV Licence to watch live channels on your smartphone as well as your TV. A TV Licence - which currently costs £169.50 for the year - is needed for any live TV and use of BBC iPlayer. But it turns out the rules go even further when watching TV away from home. Your existing TV Licence covers your smartphone anywhere - unless it's plugged in at a different property in the UK, such as your mate's house or on a UK holiday. When it's plugged in at another location, your smartphone will need to be covered by a separate TV Licence for that property. So if you're at a friend's place who doesn't have a TV Licence, charging your phone as you watch a live football match, you're technically falling foul of the law. And if you're caught by an inspector knocking at the door the maximum fine is £1,000. "As most know, you need a TV license to watch or record any live broadcast programs, or BBC iPlayer on demand, regardless of device or medium," a user recently wrote on Reddit. "Your TV license also covers you to watch this content if you are away from home on a portable device. "Here’s the kicker - if you visit someone’s house who doesn’t pay for a TV License, you are allowed to watch live telly on your phone. The strange clause demonstrates issues for the TV Licence in the digital age, amid a boom in online live streaming with the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime showing more big events.
