“I used to know your dad,” she told me at a fundraiser event. The venue was crowded with guests. Noise echoed off the walls. Music played in the background. But those six words levitated above the commotion of the night. It’s rare when I meet someone who knew my father, Joe Davich, who died on Christmas Eve, 1987. He was 50. I was 25. It feels like he’s been gone 37 lifetimes ago, not 37 years. My memories of him fade a bit more each year like images in a rear view mirror on a long drive. I’ve been patching together distant reflections of my dad for many years. My memories look like snapshot photos from an old Polaroid camera, not streaming videos from the newest iPhone. If you have parents or older loved ones who died many years ago, you may have similarly sketchy memories of them. Any information or insights or anecdotes, no matter how minuscule, feel like a gift from strangers. This is especially true if those loved ones lived before the Digital Age emerged, allowing us the opportunity to capture their lives with modern technology. I have only a photo album or two of old photos of my dad, along with some of his belongings. It’s a decades-old puzzle that’s missing quite a few pieces. It will never be complete but I’m always looking for new pieces from people who knew him, as if they’ve been tucked in their pocket since his death. For anyone whose parents are no longer here, we instinctively attempt to flesh out who they were when we weren’t paying attention. When I meet someone who knew my dad, I tend to ask the same question: What was he like? Was he funny? Ornery? Angry? Charismatic? Was he smoking a cigar? Was he telling dirty jokes? My dad and I never really talked about my brother’s addiction problems despite the role it played in our personal life and our family business. “When I think about it now, as a mother and grandmother, it must have been terrifying,” Marciniak said. “Despite his fears and the sadness of watching his son struggle, he was fiercely proud of Joe Jr. Why did he tell me about this deeply personal worry? I don’t know.” I don’t know either. But I understand the need to do so. I’ve been sharing this deeply personal aspect of my life with thousands of strangers through my writing. The Scotia Fire Department moved into its new $8.8 million home on Mohawk Avenue in July. The 14,000-square-foot building is the culmination of a yearslong effort to upgrade the village’s century-old firehouse that could not house the department’s rescue vehicles and lacked adequate space for firefighters to decominate turnout gear after battling a blaze. Voters approved the project in a 2022 referendum that allowed the village to borrow $13.8 million to upgrade its aging facilities. Lawmakers are hoping to move forward with a $5 million renovation project at Village Hall in the new year after bids for the project came in over budget this spring, effectively stalling work weeks before construction was set to begin. Canadian water management company Soleno opened its first ever U.S. facility in the WJ Grande Industrial Park this fall. The 47-year-old family-owned business is operating a 45,000-square-foot facility with a $22 million investment in the area. The Common Council previously authorized a $1 million bond for the project. Remaining costs will be covered with unanticipated state aid received by the city. The new construction will return a clubhouse to the golf course which has been without a functioning facility since the former building suffered significant water damage from burst pipes in February 2019. The building was later torn down by Lance Orcutt, who bought the property to build a modern clubhouse that never materialized. The city reacquired the site last year. City officials describe the golf course as an asset providing an amenity to existing and prospective residents alike that can help spur economic development. Additionally, officials plan to connect wastewater infrastructure across 15 miles of the Great Sacandaga Lake area for a total of $30 million, stretching as far as the village of Northville. The first will begin with the construction of 296 apartments where the former Bon-Ton store was, while the second will entail the creation of 86 townhomes, according to the project website. Matrix Hotels of Clifton Park proposed the project at 34-36 Freemans Bridge Road back in 2023 amid growing demand for hotel space in Schenectady. The company operates the adjacent Homewood Suites by Hilton Schenectady at 2 Freemans Bridge Road. The approval marks a major milestone in the redevelopment of the Freemans Bridge corridor that has been an area of focus for lawmakers for years. The Scotia Fire Department moved into its new $8.8 million home on Mohawk Avenue in July. The 14,000-square-foot building is the culmination of a yearslong effort to upgrade the village’s century-old firehouse that could not house the department’s rescue vehicles and lacked adequate space for firefighters to decominate turnout gear after battling a blaze. Voters approved the project in a 2022 referendum that allowed the village to borrow $13.8 million to upgrade its aging facilities. Lawmakers are hoping to move forward with a $5 million renovation project at Village Hall in the new year after bids for the project came in over budget this spring, effectively stalling work weeks before construction was set to begin. Canadian water management company Soleno opened its first ever U.S. facility in the WJ Grande Industrial Park this fall. The 47-year-old family-owned business is operating a 45,000-square-foot facility with a $22 million investment in the area. The company has brought German Krah Pipes technology, which it acquired in 2022, to the United States and Canada under its newest product line KUSTOMFLO. The new technology will enable the company to create custom-designed large diameter pipes using high-density polyethylene. The pipes last more than 100 years, according to a press release from the company. The company first announced plans to build an over 20,000-square-foot location on Route 9 in October 2023. City officials set a $2 million target budget for the overall project to construct a new clubhouse. It will be partially funded by a $100,000 allocation from the city’s American Rescue Plan Act federal coronavirus relief aid and $550,000 in grants secured by state representatives. The Common Council previously authorized a $1 million bond for the project. Remaining costs will be covered with unanticipated state aid received by the city. The new construction will return a clubhouse to the golf course which has been without a functioning facility since the former building suffered significant water damage from burst pipes in February 2019. The building was later torn down by Lance Orcutt, who bought the property to build a modern clubhouse that never materialized. The city reacquired the site last year. City officials describe the golf course as an asset providing an amenity to existing and prospective residents alike that can help spur economic development. Additionally, officials plan to connect wastewater infrastructure across 15 miles of the Great Sacandaga Lake area for a total of $30 million, stretching as far as the village of Northville. Once the project is completed, it will consolidate local resources and open up commerce along state routes 30 and 30A, which are the main highway connections for the Land of 44 Lakes. Chairman John Blackmon believes the project will generate more economic development for the region. After E29, a manufacturing company, announced they wanted to build a cannabis facility on the former Beech Nut site, the plans fell through to build on the 19-acre parcel. The ice rink project initially was a multi-rink design unsuccessfully proposed by a retired Gloversville teacher in Caroga in the 1990s, but Rizzo believes his engineering background will make the project a reality.
