The Social Security Administration is the federal agency responsible for delivering monthly benefits for those Americans who qualify for the Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs in the country. As the year comes to an end, the SSA has confirmed that all beneficiaries will receive their increased Social Security checks starting January 2025 . With the new 2.5% cost of living adjustment increase, beneficiaries will receive checks between $715 and $4,995 per month so they can keep pace with inflation and cover their monthly costs. Increased checks from Social Security will reach beneficiaries’ accounts as of January 2025 According to the Social Security payment schedule , beneficiaries will receive their increased checks starting on January 3rd for those retirees, survivors, and disabled Americans who requested their first benefits before May 1997. After this payment, the federal agency will deliver other checks to OASDI beneficiaries on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of the month following the next conditions: Based on the new increase standards for 2025, OASDI beneficiaries will receive the following payment amounts: Besides retirement, survivor, and disability insurance benefits, the Social Security Administration will also send benefits from the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program to low-income Americans over 65 years and disabled people under challenging financial circumstances that meet SSA’s income and recourse requirements. Even though SSI recipients always get paid on the first day of the month, they will receive an extra payment on January 31st as the first of February falls on a weekend. Therefore, on the last day of the month, SSI recipients will receive, on average, $715 per month, while those who applied as individuals can receive up to $967 and American couples up to $1,450. The Senate is running for the final push on Social Security benefits expansion The Senate is ready to vote on legislation called the Social Security Fairness Act , which would offer full Social Security benefits to millions of Americans. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer unveiled the process for a final vote, which would end regulations that presently limit Social Security payouts for almost 2.8 million Americans. A Senate version of the bill, which was filed last year, garnered 62 cosponsors, and the House passed the legislation on a bipartisan vote. However, for the bill to pass Congress, at least 60 senators must still support it. After that, it would go to the current administration. Under the law, the Social Security Trust funds—which were already predicted to be insufficient to provide full benefits starting in 2035—would be further taxed. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that over ten years, it will significantly increase federal deficits by $195 billion. According to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a typical two-earner couple retiring in 2033 would receive $25,000 less in lifetime Social Security benefits if the policy is approved. It would also accelerate the Social Security program’s insolvency date by roughly six months.ATLANTA — Garrison Mathews made a career-best seven 3-pointers and scored a season-high 25 points off the bench as the Atlanta Hawks knocked off the Minnesota Timberwolves 117-104 on Monday night. Copy 03/12/2024 10The NBA's five-game Christmas lineup was the league's most-watched in five years, with the games averaging about 5.25 million viewers per game across ABC, ESPN and its platforms, the league said Thursday based on Nielsen's preliminary numbers. It's an 84% rise over the NBA's Christmas numbers from 2023. The Los Angeles Lakers’ 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors — a game pitting Olympic teammates LeBron James and Stephen Curry — averaged 7.76 million viewers and peaked with about 8.32 million viewers toward the end of the contest, the league said. Those numbers represent the most-watched NBA regular season game in five years. “I love the NFL,” James said in his televised postgame interview Wednesday night. “But Christmas is our day.” The NBA said all five Christmas games on its schedule — San Antonio at New York in Victor Wembanyama's holiday debut, Minnesota at Dallas, Philadelphia at Boston, Denver at Phoenix and Lakers-Warriors — saw year-over-year viewership increases. Wednesday's numbers pushed NBA viewership for the season across ESPN platforms to up 4% over last season. The league also saw more than 500 million video views on its social media platforms Wednesday, a new record. For the NBA, those are all good signs amid cries that NBA viewership is hurting. “Ratings are down a bit at beginning of the season. But cable television viewership is down double digits so far this year versus last year," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month. “You know, we’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programing on streaming than they are on traditional television. And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which we enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service.” Part of that new package of television deals that the NBA is entering into next season also increases the number of regular season games broadcast on television from 15 to 75. From wealth and success to murder suspect, the life of Luigi Mangione took a hard turnAmazon is facing a strike of 10,000 workers, the largest in its history, as the company is dealing with the holiday crunch. According to , the strike began after Amazon executives failed to meet a deadline to negotiate with employees wages and working conditions. “If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “These greedy executives had every chance to show decency and respect for the people who make their obscene profits possible. Instead, they’ve pushed workers to the limit and now they’re paying the price. This strike is on them.” Employees say Amazon doesn’t care for them, despite claiming it does. “Amazon is one of the biggest, richest corporations in the world,” said Gabriel Irizarry, a driver at DIL7 in Skokie, Ill. “They talk a big game about taking care of their workers, but when it comes down to it, Amazon does not respect us and our right to negotiate for better working conditions and wages. We can’t even afford to pay our bills.” Amazon is notoriously , going to great lengths to undermine organizing efforts, including to monitor such employees. The company has faced repeated criticism for its stance, with its own to tone down its efforts, and a US judge ordering the company to . Despite Amazon’s well-known stance, employees are counting on the equally well-known reputation of the Teamsters union to help them. “I’ve seen the Teamsters win big battles,” said Dia Ortiz, a worker at DBK4 in New York. “We’re ready to do what it takes to win this one.” Only time will tell if the strike has any effect.

Chris Cenac Jr., the top center in the Class of 2025 according to the ESPN100, has committed to play for the Houston Cougars. The five-star recruit announced his decision Tuesday via the Bleacher Report's B/R App. Cenac previously said he wouldn't make his decision until the spring, but his stock soared over the summer after his impressive play on the Puma Pro 16 circuit with Dallas-based YGC, vaulting him into the national top-10 rankings. The 6-foot-10 New Orleans native was reportedly choosing between LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Baylor, Kentucky, Tennessee and others before making the decision to join Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson's team. "I just like the coaching staff a lot, I like their plan to develop me and I like coming into a winning program," Cenac told 247Sports. "I'm looking forward to producing and just helping them win more. But the main thing was development and them being able to get me better so I can be ready for that next level." Cenac's rating of .9978 by 247Sports Composite makes him the Cougars' highest-rated commit in the modern era, according to multiple outlets. "They see me as a four who can kind of play all over the court and do everything," Cenac told 247Sports. "I can get rebounds, push the ball, shoot and play all over the floor." With Cenac joining other Houston commits like five-star shooting guard Isaiah Harwell, four-star point guard Kingston Flemings and three-star wing Bryce Jackson, Houston's Class of 2025 is ranked No. 2 in the nation by 247Sports and ESPN. --Field Level Media
