The summer transfer window is a crucial period for clubs to reinforce their squads, address weaknesses, and bolster their chances of success in the upcoming season. For Arsenal, a club with a rich history and a loyal fan base, the pressure to make astute signings and compete at the highest level is always present. However, this summer proved to be a frustrating one for the Gunners, as two potential deals slipped through their fingers at the last minute.Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, have also been in the mix this season. Despite facing some injury setbacks, Jurgen Klopp's side has continued to showcase their attacking prowess and never-say-die attitude. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Virgil van Dijk have been instrumental in Liverpool's quest for another title. At the same time, the proposed ban raises questions about the effectiveness of such measures in addressing national security concerns. While restricting the sale of drones by specific companies may mitigate certain risks, it is essential to adopt a holistic approach that encompasses broader cybersecurity measures and regulations to combat potential threats effectively. For the pharmaceutical company-owned team, losing their star player would be a significant blow. They would have to scramble to find a suitable replacement and adjust their tactics to cope with his absence. However, if they manage to keep hold of him, it would be a massive boost for their ambitions and aspirations in the league.
THE shock of a very right-wing Donald Trump winning a second term as President of the United States – that so-called “shining example of democracy” – made me think about what is happening in Malaysia. I remember hearing “Suara rakyat suara keramat” (the voice of the people is a sacred voice) during those days of the call for “Reformasi” led by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following the Permatang Pauh Declaration in 1998. I was then, and have been since, a strong proponent of democracy. But today, I have actually begun doubting whether we, the rakyat, actually have a “suara keramat” or a “suara keparat” (voice of a scoundrel). The idea of democracy is said to have begun with the ancient Greeks; the word itself is formed from the Greek words demos (people) and kratos (power or rule), meaning “rule by the people”. All free men participated in decision-making by voting for their representatives in assemblies – one man, one vote. Free men meant those who owned property, were not slaves, and who were willing to defend their country to the death. These were obviously educated men who knew what was at stake in their small world. And, no, women were not allowed to vote. So some 2,500 years on, we have the same idea of one person, one vote (women were finally allowed to vote just a little over a century ago). But the people who can now vote are quite different from that small group of educated men. Now voters may not be educated, may not own property, and may be too old to defend the country. Also different from the Greeks, we now have social media, through which one vote may influence thousands of other votes. I’m not so sure it is still one vote, one person anymore. Also different from the Greeks, we, the people, experience an industrial style of education without any philosophical, creative or even critical thinking. In this, we are very different from the ancient Greeks, who were known to highly value philosophy. There are three things I worry about in today’s democracy – what I consider the “sins” of a democracy. Firstly, as I have written before, the voters have no grounding in politics and how a country works. Thus, left floundering, many give in to instilled fears and choose along racial, religious and populist lines when it comes time to vote. If one is a Malay, one votes for a Malay or Malay-dominated party; the same thing happens with other races. This I call “the sin of tribal preference”. The second sin I see emerging from civil society: The idea of civil society is to be the conscience of the nation by airing views and protests – in a calm and dignified manner, mind you. What I can see now is some well-known civil society organisations (CSOs) demanding many reforms in a reckless, demeaning and unfair manner. What do I mean by unfair? Well, people who criticise the government for not carrying out reforms must understand that the government cannot act in a vacuum. CSOs must understand the context of the culture of politics and entrenched administrators as well as the views of a majority race. Politics is about managing all these views; CSOs have the luxury of only managing their own conscience and self-righteousness. Secondly, I am disgusted to see civil society using derogatory means to make their points by grandstanding on issues while shouting or writing as if ministers do not have any feelings. I have seen expressions like “the minister doesn’t seem to have a clue”, “the PM does not seem to care at all about other rakyat of different faiths” or “the PM deserves a D grade”. These criticisms fail in three important ways: Firstly, the criticism is usually unclear in scope and expectation. Change what? How to change and which part exactly? Secondly, the criticism does not take into account administrative procedures and – most importantly – party politics. Party politics among different coalition partners is a real thing and cannot be ignored, and there is, I’m sure some sort of private quid pro quo dealing going on. That is unavoidable. I am not justifying it but it is silly and naive not to understand that it exists and has to be dealt with. Finally, I feel that “grading” a prime minister is rather childish and clearly doesn’t work because grading requires the grader to have been in the position of who the grade is for; grading requires moderation from different sources. Since just one CSO takes on this task, what practical use is it? Also, I personally feel it’s rather rude. The Islamic way of advising leaders, and I believe that it is also the Asian way, is to speak privately, with carefully selected words – with hemah, or wisdom and tact. Not having their grouses splattered all over the media. The final democratic sin is one that we, the rakyat, commit when we refuse to check the facts of an issue and simply make them go viral on Internet platforms, complete with all the lies, propaganda and misinformation. When the facts of the matter are established, the damage is already done. If this country fails and falls into poverty and chaos, I would no longer blame the politicians or the administrators but point the finger back at ourselves, the rakyat, for refusing to learn to change, for allowing knee-jerk reactions and bad manners to threaten unity, and for making untruths go viral willingly and joyfully. We would have only ourselves to blame. BISMARCK — North Dakota’s new and returning lawmakers met at the state Capitol in Bismarck on Monday, Dec. 2, commencing the three-day organizational session ahead of the lawmaking season. The organizational session is the time during which lawmakers — namely those who are newly elected — familiarize themselves with the procedures and rules necessary to carry out the lawmaking process. It does not count towards the biennial lawmaking session that begins January and lasts up to 80 days. ADVERTISEMENT Twenty-two new lawmakers are heading into the 69th legislative session, including two members who returned after not being reelected in recent elections: Sen. Richard Marcellais, D-Belcourt, and Rep. Daniel Johnston, R-Kathryn. Day one included the speaker of the House appointment, committee designations and the swearing-in ceremony. The more menial tasks on the agenda for lawmakers involved computer training, seating arrangement and taking fresh headshots. “Times change, things are different. We have to make sure that everybody’s up to speed,” said House Majority Leader Mike Lefor, R-Dickinson. “You’re going to have your agreements, you’re going to have your disagreements," he said. "But it’s all in the spirit of providing the best public policy that we possibly can.” Both House Republicans and Democrats unanimously agreed on nominating Rep. Robin Weisz to serve as speaker of the House. Weisz described the chamber as “the people’s house” while addressing the Legislature from the podium for the first time as speaker. District 41 newcomer Karen Grindberg, R-Fargo, was also unanimously elected by the district to replace Lt. Gov.-elect Michelle Strinden. ADVERTISEMENT “It’s just really exciting how welcoming everybody is and how they want to be helpful,” Grindberg said. Though the intimate details tied to lawmaking are new to the freshman legislator, coming to the Capitol has become second nature. “We used to run around the halls when we were little, that was our favorite thing to do after school," she said. Grindberg’s father was a lawmaker for 22 years and the Republican House Majority Leader. Meanwhile, her husband, Tony Grindberg, was a senator for more than 20 years. She is also the mother of North Dakota Treasurer Thomas Beadle and mother-in-law to Strinden. “I’m excited for the opportunity," Karen Grindberg said. "I want to get to work.” Tuesday’s training will be similar, paying particular attention to ethical topics like workplace harassment and social media conduct. Interim committee findings will also be briefly presented to lawmakers. ADVERTISEMENT The session will conclude Wednesday with the presentation and deliberations of Gov. Doug Burgum’s final budget address. Republicans maintain supermajorities in both chambers, outnumbering Democrats 83-11 in the House and 42-5 in the Senate. Neither party will see different leaders for the 2025 session. Lefor and Senate Majority Leader David Hogue, R-Minot, were reelected during Republican caucus meetings last month. Sen. Kathy Hogan, D-Fargo, and Rep. Zac Ista, D-Grand Forks, were reelected as Senate and House minority leaders during the respective state Democratic-NPL caucases.LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have claimed cornerback Emmanuel Forbes off waivers from Washington. The Cheam and Sqwá First Nations in the Fraser Valley are sounding the alarm for the second time in a few months about mysterious discharge flowing into the Hope Slough in Chilliwack, B.C., that they say is toxic. Cheam First Nation biologist Mike Pearson said the cloudy, foaming substance running through a ditch into the main stem of the slough smells like a combination of chemicals and sewage. "It's distressing from an environmental point of view and from a human health point of view," he said. "Right now we are in the middle of a coho salmon run ... So they have to come through this pollution on their way [to spawning grounds] and I have no idea what impact this will have on them." Roxanna Kooistra, who works for the Cheam environmental restoration department, said white and grey sludge was found pouring out of a pipe into a ditch that runs into Hope Slough on Nov. 28. She said so far, no dead fish have been found. "At this time we're working with Environment and Climate Change Canada federal officers to identify the sources. We have found three possible sources and officers are working with those land owners to stop the ongoing spill," said Kooistra. Drone image of discharge flowing into the Hope Slough. (Submitted by Cheam First Nation) In September, Cheam and Sqwá First Nations called attention to discharge at a different location on the Hope Slough that they say , including juvenile coho salmon, trout and the endangered Salish sucker. An from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness said the source of the September spill remains undetermined. "Multiple factors may have contributed to the fish kill," it stated. "Preliminary findings suggest low oxygen levels in the water. This does not usually pose a direct risk to human health. The cause of these levels is still under investigation." The Hope Slough, known as Sqwa:la by local First Nations, flows into the Fraser River, the longest river in B.C. and one of the largest salmon spawning rivers in the world. First Nations have been trying for years to restore salmon stocks and clean the waterway, which runs through a number of public parks in Chilliwack and is popular with paddlers and anglers. According to the Cheam and Sqwá First Nations, evidence of the discharge can be seen several kilometres downstream from where it is entering into Hope Slough. In a release, the nations said the pipe discharging the substance is "a permanent fixture, which leads us to believe that this is not a one-time offence but an ongoing polluter to these environmentally crucial waterways." The Cheam First Nation said it is covering the cost of the cleanup, as it did for the September discharge, after the Ministry of the Environment declined to respond. Scott McKenzie, a Ministry of Environment and Parks spokesperson, said in an email that the ministry received a new report of poor water quality in the Hope Slough on Nov. 29 and that it is following up. "No dead fish have been reported," he said.
This latest development is just the latest in a series of high-profile corruption cases that have rocked South Korea in recent years. The country has been grappling with endemic corruption in its political and business sectors, leading to a growing public demand for accountability and transparency.

The gaming industry has been under increased scrutiny in recent years for its lack of diversity and representation, particularly in regards to LGBT+ characters. In light of this, some critics argue that Rockstar's request for toned-down humor may be more of a strategic move to avoid backlash and maintain a positive public image, rather than a genuine effort to promote inclusivity and diversity in gaming.
LAS VEGAS – Max Verstappen returned to the Las Vegas Grand Prix as the defending winner of the Sin City spectacle and a fourth consecutive Formula 1 championship well within his reach. The Dutchman needed only to finish Saturday night's race ahead of Lando Norris of McLaren to make it four straight for the Red Bull driver. Verstappen starts fifth and Norris is sixth. Recommended Videos Norris can additionally lose the title if he fails to outscore Verstappen by three points on the neon-lit street circuit that zips down the famed Las Vegas Strip. The race is back for a second year and again promoted by Liberty Media, the commercial rights holder of F1. The debut event was a bit of a disaster in that locals were livid for months over ongoing construction, as well as traffic detours and delays, the inability to access many local businesses, outrageous price gouging by the tourism industry as well as LVGP ticketing, and then a loose valve cover that nearly destroyed Carlos Sainz Jr.'s Ferrari minutes into the first practice. It caused an hours-long delay for repairs, fans were kicked out of the circuit, and F1 ran practice until 4 a.m. — when it legally had to reopen the streets to the public. This year has been far less hectic, in part because all of the infrastructure headaches were a year ago, but also that last year's race was spectacular. Despite all its speed bumps, the actual running of the race was one of the best of the F1 season and could produce a similar show Saturday night. George Russell of Mercedes starts from the pole ahead of Sainz , who wants redemption after the valve-cover fiasco last year. He had to serve a penalty because his car was damaged in the incident. Ferrari is expected to be the class of the field, which could tighten the nail-biting constructer championship battle. Red Bull, the two-time reigning winners, have fallen to third in the standings behind McLaren and Ferrari. But with Las Vegas the first of the final three races of the season, McLaren is clinging to a 36-point lead for a championship worth an estimated $150 million in prize money. McLaren last won the constructor title in 1998, while Ferrari last won it in 2008. The race is the final stop in the United States for F1, which has exploded in American popularity the last five years. The trio of races in Miami; Austin, Texas; and Las Vegas are more than any other country. After the race completion, F1 next week is expected to announce it will expand the grid to 11 teams to make room for an American team backed by General Motors' Cadillac brand. The team was initially started by Michael Andretti, who could not receive approval from F1 on his expansion application. Andretti has since turned over his ownership stake to Indiana-businessman Dan Towriss and Mark Walter, the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They would run the Cadillac F1 team that would likely join the grid in 2026. The announcement of the American team did not come during the weekend to not derail from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is the showpiece of the Liberty Media portfolio. With one-time infrastructure costs last year, the debut event was believed to cost Liberty nearly $1 billion. Expenses are down this year, but Liberty put in as much glitz and glamour as possible, anyway. There are nightclubs around the course and on top of the paddock, an ice-skating rink, top-level musical acts and a 10 p.m. local start to make it feel like a true Las Vegas big Saturday night event. ___ AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling alliance won an election in Maharashtra by a wide margin, signaling policy continuity in a state which houses most of India’s billionaires and is home to some of the country’s biggest investments. The Mahayuti coalition, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, is ahead with 228 seats of the 288-member legislative assembly, according to the Election Commission of India. The Indian National Congress-led alliance has the advantage in just 47 seats, halting a momentum they built during national elections. The margins are wide enough for the elections to be called even as the final stages of counting are in progress. “Development wins! Good governance wins! United we will soar even higher!” Modi said in a post on X on Saturday. A separate Congress alliance in Jharkhand is leading in 50 seats of the 81-member legislative assembly, according to the Election Commission. Modi has conceded in the state. Exit polls released Wednesday predicted a tight contest in both states, with a slight edge forecast for the BJP alliance in Maharashtra. Mahayuti is now expected to win by a landslide with the main opposition and other smaller regional parties barely scraping by. BJP candidates are in the lead in 90 seats and have had a win declared for 42 more. “This is the voice of the people, it is the government of the people and it is a government for the best of the people,” Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told reporters Saturday afternoon. A victory in Maharashtra, which houses the financial capital of Mumbai, is expected to give a boost to stock markets which had already made gains on Friday in anticipation of the results. It suggests Modi remains popular, even though his party lost an outright majority in national polls. In those elections, more than 20 different parties worked together, shedding ideological differences and pooling resources to take on Modi’s electoral prowess. Since the results in June, four state polls were conducted with the BJP picking up two significant ones. “The BJP has a reasonably fixed vote share which it will get,” said Neelanjan Sircar, an associate professor at Ahmedabad University. Also, “we are seeing local seat level factions taking on an importance.” Maharashtra contributes over 10% of India’s gross domestic product, with Mumbai home to companies such as Reliance Industries Ltd. and Tata Group, the country’s two main stock markets, and the Hindi film industry. The state’s economic reputation, however, is at risk of being tarnished by growing farmer distress and high unemployment. Modi and his party have introduced a series of social welfare programs, including cash handouts to women and have promised further subsidies. The state is also one of the biggest recipients of foreign investment and BJP’s win will calm investors and allow ambitious development projects already in the works to continue. Billionaire Gautam Adani aims to revamp one of Asia’s biggest slums, but his $3 billion plan to convert 620 acres (251 hectares) of Dharavi into a glitzy urban hub had become a political hot potato. The opposition has repeatedly vowed to cancel the project during campaigning. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who won both parliamentary seats he contested in June, chose to vacate his seat in Wayanad, Kerala. His sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is running in the by-election there in her first political match for the Congress party, winning the seat with a margin of more than 410,000 votes. ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. The Rams (6-6) announced the move Monday. They waived undrafted rookie defensive back Charles Woods to make room on the roster. Forbes was the 16th overall draft pick in 2023, but the Commanders released him Saturday in yet another latest flop for their first-round selections under former coach Ron Rivera. Forbes started 10 games as a rookie, but the Mississippi State product got benched during the season — and his playing time dwindled to almost nothing under new coach Dan Quinn this season. Forbes was considered undersized to be an elite NFL defensive back before Washington used a first-round pick on him, and his play did little to discourage that perception. But the Rams are taking a flier on Forbes to help their mediocre pass defense. Darious Williams, a member of the Rams’ Super Bowl championship team who returned to Los Angeles this season as a free agent, has been their best cover corner, but he struggled in Sunday’s victory over New Orleans.
