Requirements for the integration of environmental concerns, human rights issues, fair labour conditions and good governance in industrial development are significantly affecting the business sectors in developing and transitioning countries. FROM the lofty towers of policymakers and implementers to the profit-driven boardrooms of corporations and conglomerates, the increasingly familiar term ‘green’ or ‘greening’ has become a buzzword. It has gained popularity and traction in both the public and business spheres, and is used interchangeably depending on the situation. It’s even made its way onto the cheeky local burger menu! It is fashionable and trendy to speak or write of ‘greening’ in mission statements and CSR programmes. The media, not to be left out of the linguistic vogue, have joined the chorus and are contributing to amplifying the voice on greening as well as broadening the public and cross-sector support for the greening narrative. However, there is a larger and more comprehensive story behind the ‘green’ or ‘greening’ movement, which frequently emerges as a daring declaration of a new civic awakening in the cause of ensuring environmental sustainability, even as we advance the rhetoric as a united campaign to counteract the greenhouse effects of climate change on our environment. Yes Minister, as we delve deeper and explore further, we would find that the much-spun narrative on environmental sustainability in our society is more complex and intriguing than a well-written treatise can explain. Let’s start by posing the following question: What does it mean to ‘green’ business, society, industry, or even human-instituted organisations? One way to achieve sustainable economic growth and support sustainable economies is through the greening of industry. It encompasses resource-efficient productivity, enhanced industrial production methods, and policymaking. Carbon neutrality by 2050 The five-year 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), introduced by the government back in September 2021, aims to achieve economic growth and transform Malaysia into ‘a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable country’. Goals include achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, increasing the total installed capacity of renewable energy, enhancing green financing and incentives, and promoting the circular economy. Sarawak, with the passing of the Natural Resources and Environment Bill in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) in November this year, will assume full regulatory authority over the environment. The piece of legislation reaffirms the authority and commitment of the Sarawak government to manage the environment sustainably without compromising its economic development agenda and industrial plan. Regulatory authority on the environment was transferred to Sarawak in phases since 2022. The recently-passed Bill gives Sarawak full authority over resource conservation, environmental management, pollution control and sustainable development. These provisions are intended not only to safeguard Sarawak’s natural assets but also to promote responsible development in alignment with global environmental standards. This would include determining the use of natural resources, issuing directives on environmental management practices, and setting environmental quality goals. Yes Minister, the rise in importance of environmental, social, and governance standards comes as consumers are growing more concerned about the environment and demand institutions to behave in ways that align with what they believe is socially responsible. An investing principle that prioritises social, environmental, and corporate governance is known as environmental, social and governance – or ESG. Other terms for investing with ESG considerations include impact investment or responsible investing, which is used in more aggressive circumstances. Ethical concern More and more investors are making social and environmental performance a primary factor in their selections. In recent years, ethical concern has become increasingly ‘mainstream’, even though this has played a role in ethical funding. When environmental requirements are imposed by governments, businesses are encouraged to spend on research and development to meet them. This could lead to the development of new, environmentally friendly processes and technologies. Consumers can help by reducing waste, choosing sustainable options, and buying from local and sustainable sources. They must be encouraged and reminded to do so from time to time, with the local community leaders and the media playing an important role. Companies can assist by recognising the effects that their goods and services have on the environment and society, and by developing innovative approaches to sustainable production and consumption. To guarantee adherence to laws and regulations, government officials can step up enforcement actions. To guarantee more compliance, they can also extend guided self-regulation across industries. Beyond all the aforesaid is the pivotal importance of sustainability benchmarking. Yes Minister, sustainability benchmarking plays a crucial role in guiding companies towards more responsible and efficient operations. By comparing their ESG performance against industry standards and peers, organisations can uncover valuable insights and opportunities for improvement. Sustainability benchmarking One of the main advantages of sustainability benchmarking is the ability to pinpoint areas that require improvement. It pushes businesses to innovate and embrace best practices, which results in sustainability breakthroughs that can save expenses, boost productivity, and boost overall performance. By analysing their position in relation to their counterparts, businesses can obtain a competitive advantage through benchmarking. This information can be used to guide strategic choices, giving companies a competitive edge by showcasing their dedication to sustainability. Investors and customers are increasingly prioritising sustainability in their decision-making processes. This can lead to inconsistencies in the assessment of environmental performance. The complex process of data collection; the limited scope of operations, the procedure, especially for multinational or multi-site businesses; the interpretation of results, which necessitates knowledge of environmental legislation; and continuous monitoring and development, are the additional challenges. An environmental audit is a continual procedure as opposed to a one-time event. In light of the audit findings, organisations need to establish mechanisms for continuous monitoring and improvement. Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb on Saturday said that the investment was coming into the country and existing investment was fantastic. He said that the economy of the country was moving in the right direction. While briefing the media persons after a meeting with Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI), the Finance Minister said that they talked about structural reforms, taxation, energy, SOEs, privatization agenda and had to move with them in cooperation with existing investors. Aurangzeb said that the government would only provide policy framework and policy continuity, which was important. He said that these companies would help the government in terms of joint ventures, privatization of SOEs. He advised the private sector to include a component of export in their investments. The minister said that the country had import-led economy owing to that they got into the balance of payment problem. He was of the view, ‘If We have to end the boom and bust cycle and put forward the economy towards 4, 5 or 6th percent growth. It has to be export-led growth.’ He said that every single entity of this country should contribute to exports. He said that markets were available for ‘Made in Pakistan’ products. He said that they could not be complacent in the wake of the SBP Investors Confidence Report. ‘Why do I say that the private sector has to lead this country,’ he asked adding that SOEs had caused Rs6 trillion of loss during last 10 years. (AP) — This is supposed to be a golden age for placekicking in the NFL. Try telling that to the fans in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Cincinnati right now. Justin Tucker, Jake Elliott and Evan McPherson — three of the more dependable kickers in the league in recent years — are in slumps that have reached a crisis point. It’s a jarring development not just because of what these players accomplished previously, but because this is an era when misses have become increasingly rare. “It’s certainly frustrating, especially when we know that these (Ravens-Steelers) games come down to the wire, like this one did today, that I let a couple get away,” Tucker said after missing two field goals in the Ravens' 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh last weekend. “But, like I’ve said before, the only thing that we can do is just get right back to work and focus on making the most out of our next opportunity.” A five-time All-Pro, Tucker has been a phenomenon for most of his career. His combination of leg strength, accuracy and clutch performance gives him a case as the greatest of all time at the position, and he’s stood out even as kickers throughout the league have raised expectations. It is fashionable and trendy to speak or write of ‘greening’ in mission statements and CSR programmes. The media, not to be left out of the linguistic vogue, have joined the chorus and are contributing to amplifying the voice on greening as well as broadening the public and cross-sector support for the greening narrative. However, there is a larger and more comprehensive story behind the ‘green’ or ‘greening’ movement, which frequently emerges as a daring declaration of a new civic awakening in the cause of ensuring environmental sustainability, even as we advance the rhetoric as a united campaign to counteract the greenhouse effects of climate change on our environment. Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb on Saturday said that the investment was coming into the country and existing investment was fantastic. He said that the economy of the country was moving in the right direction. While briefing the media persons after a meeting with Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI), the Finance Minister said that they talked about structural reforms, taxation, energy, SOEs, privatization agenda and had to move with them in cooperation with existing investors. Aurangzeb said that the government would only provide policy framework and policy continuity, which was important. He said that these companies would help the government in terms of joint ventures, privatization of SOEs. He advised the private sector to include a component of export in their investments. The minister said that the country had import-led economy owing to that they got into the balance of payment problem. He was of the view, ‘If We have to end the boom and bust cycle and put forward the economy towards 4, 5 or 6th percent growth. It has to be export-led growth.’ He said that every single entity of this country should contribute to exports. He said that markets were available for ‘Made in Pakistan’ products. He said that they could not be complacent in the wake of the SBP Investors Confidence Report. ‘Why do I say that the private sector has to lead this country,’ he asked adding that SOEs had caused Rs6 trillion of loss during last 10 years. Aurangzeb, replying to a question, said that investors were coming here and political stability was an important component. He said that the loss of Rs190 was being endured every single day due to sit-ins. ‘We have to collectively contemplate about it. We should build tolerance. When we talk about the Charter of Economy does not matter, which administration comes in,’ he said adding we all should be on the same page for a stable Pakistan. He said that petroleum volume had grown up due to curb on smuggling. He said that they identified illegal stations, which had been sealed. They had also issued warnings to shops selling illegal cigarettes. Answering a question, he said we were talking about the Agriculture tax with the Sindh government. Punjab government had done work on it and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were working on it. The Finance Minister said that they were bringing real estate, agriculture, wholesalers and retailers under tax net. He said that they had to deepen and broaden the tax net. He further said that leakages in sales tax and income tax were being stopped through the digitalization process. Replying to a question on inflation, he said that a Standard Item Agenda had been introduced by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to control prices of pulses, petroleum, transportation, in view of the decline in rates in international markets to provide relief to the people. (AP) — This is supposed to be a golden age for placekicking in the NFL. Try telling that to the fans in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Cincinnati right now. Justin Tucker, Jake Elliott and Evan McPherson — three of the more dependable kickers in the league in recent years — are in slumps that have reached a crisis point. It’s a jarring development not just because of what these players accomplished previously, but because this is an era when misses have become increasingly rare. “It’s certainly frustrating, especially when we know that these (Ravens-Steelers) games come down to the wire, like this one did today, that I let a couple get away,” Tucker said after missing two field goals in the Ravens' 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh last weekend. “But, like I’ve said before, the only thing that we can do is just get right back to work and focus on making the most out of our next opportunity.” A five-time All-Pro, Tucker has been a phenomenon for most of his career. His combination of leg strength, accuracy and clutch performance gives him a case as the greatest of all time at the position, and he’s stood out even as kickers throughout the league have raised expectations. Kickers league-wide have made 84.9% of their field-goal attempts this season. That’s down a tick from last year’s 85.9%, but still ranks among the most accurate seasons in NFL history. And on attempts of 50-plus yards, kickers are converting 71.9% of the time in 2024. Thirty years ago, that figure was below 40%. While the rest of the league has caught up to kickers such as Tucker, he’s also taken a step back. He’s already missed six field goals this season, and two weeks ago the Ravens had to overcome a missed extra point in the fourth quarter of a win over Cincinnati. “He’s going to get it figured out. We have coaches. We have technique. We look at the tape,” Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. “He’s practicing well. He’s got to kick it straight.” Tucker did make a game-tying 56-yard kick against Cincinnati last month, in a game the Ravens eventually won in overtime. In that same game, McPherson missed a 53-yarder that would have won it for the Bengals. When McPherson came into the league in 2021, he went 9 of 11 from 50-plus yards during the regular season — then made all 14 of his field-goal attempts in the playoffs. He’s been far more erratic this season. With the game tied Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, McPherson had fourth-quarter misses from 48 and 51 yards, and the Bengals went on to lose 34-27. “He knows to make those kicks,” star receiver Ja’Marr Chase said. “That’s why we paid him those bucks — to make those kicks in crunch time.” The Eagles are in a better spot than the Ravens and Bengals — Philadelphia has won six straight. But Elliott has given them a little to worry about. He missed two field goals and an extra point in a win over Washington on Thursday night. “We have so much faith in him,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “This team believes so much in Jake Elliott because of his track record and who he is and the teammate he is and the captain he is.” After earning second-team All-Pro honors last season, Elliott signed a four-year, $24 million extension in March. That was followed by big extensions for Cleveland’s Dustin Hopkins (three years, $15.9 million), Kansas City’s Harrison Butker (four years, $25.6 million) and McPherson (three years, $16.5 million). Elliott has missed five field-goal attempts this season, and Hopkins and McPherson have missed six each. Butker has kicked fine but recently needed surgery on his non-kicking knee. There’s enough time left in the season for some of these struggling kickers to steady themselves, and certainly their track records suggest that may happen, but for teams such as Baltimore and Philadelphia in particular, it’s highly likely they’ll be in the playoffs. And when that happens, the kicking game will be magnified. At the beginning of the season, few would have expected that the Ravens and Eagles would have any problems in that area. Now it’s a real concern. “He’s definitely our best option, and he’s going to make a lot of kicks — I really believe that — going forward,” Harbaugh said. “But it’s up to him.
