The distance of roughly 450 kilometres seems to be a pretty good baseline these days, at least without installing enormous batteries the size of Vancouver Island (ahem, Chevrolet Silverado EV, ahem). Numerous companies have been working on so-called solid-state batteries, units which do a much better job in the field of energy density than the technology currently available, such as liquid-state lithium-ion batteries. This week, researchers from Honda outlined their desires in this arena, hoping to use solid-state tech to double the range of the automaker’s EVs by the end of this decade. Keiji Otsu, president of Honda R&D, has been bullish on the prospect. “It’s a game-changer of the EV era,” he told Reuters reporters during a tour of the company’s solid-state battery pilot production line late November. The assembly in Tochigi, north of Tokyo, is pencilled to crank out all-solid-state batteries beginning January 2025, following an investment of 43 billion yen (CDN$388 million) , nearly half of which was furnished through subsidies from the Japanese government. Over the next five years, Honda hopes to cut battery sizes in half while chopping at least 25% of the cost from the things. Basic math tells us doubling the energy density of a battery and halving its size means a company could package a much smaller and lighter battery into an EV without sacrificing any range; or, as would likely be preferred in this market, retain the approximate size of today’s cells whilst cranking total driving range to 900 kilometres or more. This would handsomely address concerns about range anxiety, especially if cost and weight are kept under control. Toss in a charging capability that’s at least as good as what is on the market today, and it is likely electric vehicles would become more appealing to a wider variety of shoppers. Of course, EVs aren’t right for everyone, no matter the range or recharge stats — the quicker car companies and governments get that through their heads, the better off we’ll all be. Honda is open to sharing the tech for a price, saying it has “no reason to refuse” the external sale of its solid-state batteries if such a path is mutually beneficial to it and its partners. Hospitals and houses were inundated in Chennai and its neighbourhoods on Saturday following Cyclone Fengal induced heavy downpour, as civic authorities said clearing works were on in a 'war-footing.' Barricades and umbrellas were swept away by gusty winds and road users scurried for cover as rains poured, with cyclone Fengal inching closer to the shoreline on Saturday, leaving many areas in and around Chennai under water. Curiously, a lot of people, especially young men and women, frolicked at beaches, and strangely, visitors could be spotted at the Mamallapuram world heritage site too, despite the government warning people against going near beaches, in view of the high tides. Wind speed was pretty high in coastline areas such as Marakkanam in Villupuram district. Rainwater entered the premises of two state-run hospitals at Chromepet, a general hospital and a facility for thoracic medicine, both of which are located side by side and frequented by people. Water was close to the level of one's ankle even inside the hospital, leaving health care seekers and doctors in a tight spot. Police and local authorities placed sandbags at entry points and said all steps were being taken to address the issue. ARMOUR Residential REIT, Inc. TWO STUNNING PENALTY SAVES AS LIVERPOOL TAKE DOWN REAL MADRID Kylian Mbappe saw a penalty saved as Liverpool beat Real Madrid 2-0 to inflict a third Champions League defeat in five matches on the holders. Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo scored the goals in the second half as the Reds maintained their perfect record to return to the top of the table. Mohamed Salah also fired wide from the spot, but it mattered little as Liverpool secured a 17th win in Arne Slot’s first 19 games in charge. Slot has already achieved what Jurgen Klopp could not as Liverpool boss by slaying the Spanish giants. Liverpool had a score to settle with Madrid, who were unbeaten in eight previous meetings between the sides, including Champions League finals against Klopp’s men in 2018 and 2022. Defeat sends Carlo Ancelotti’s side tumbling down to 24th in the table. Only the top 24 progress to the knockout stage with the top eight advancing directly to the last 16. Liverpool are well on course to do just that and the confidence coursing through a side also eight points clear at the top of the Premier League was in evidence throughout in front of a highly-charged Anfield crowd. Madrid were hamstrung by a lengthy injury list and made the trip to England without Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Aurelien Tchouameni and David Alaba. Young centre-back Raul Asencio has been pressed into action by those absences and he made a vital goal-line clearance on four minutes. Darwin Nunez was sent in behind the Madrid defence by Salah and after his shot produced a fine save from Thibaut Courtois, Asencio reacted smartly to prevent the rebound bouncing off him and into his own net. Courtois was Liverpool’s scourge with a man-of-the-match performance in the final two years ago as Madrid prevailed 1-0 in Paris. The Belgian was at his best again as he blocked another big Nunez chance from point-blank range as the Liverpool pressure built without reward before the break. Courtois was in sparkling form again at the start of the second period to parry Conor Bradley’s downward header. But Liverpool were not to be denied as Bradley was this time the provider for Mac Allister, who manufactured the space for a shot into the far corner on 52 minutes. The visitors were relying on Mbappe for a moment of magic in the absence of Vinicius, but the Frenchman was well-marshalled by his international team-mate Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. His chance to silence his critics arrived on the hour mark when Andy Robertson was harshly adjudged to have tripped Lucas Vazquez inside the area. Caoimhin Kelleher has excelled in the absence of the injured Alisson Becker and leapt to his left to save Mbappe’s spot-kick. Salah sparked a furore ahead of the game by declaring his disappointment with Liverpool’s failure to offer him a contract renewal. The Egyptian has been in sparkling form this season and his pace and trickery fooled Ferland Mendy into a mistimed challenge. Salah, though, gave Madrid a lifeline by firing his penalty off the outside of the post. Liverpool had to wait just six more minutes for the cushion of a second goal as substitute Gakpo rose highest from a corner to power a header past Courtois. HORROR OWN GOAL AS CELTIC RESCUE DRAW Meanwhile, Daizen Maeda’s superb equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for Celtic against Club Brugge and kept them on course for the knockout phase. A disastrous own goal from Cameron Carter-Vickers handed Brugge a first-half lead in Glasgow, but a moment of inspiration from Maeda spared Celtic from a potentially damaging defeat. Belgian champions Brugge were chasing successive wins over British sides after ending Aston Villa’s perfect start to the competition, and twice went close through Ferran Jutgla and Andreas Skov Olsen. The visitors struck in the 26th minute when Carter-Vickers passed the ball into an unguarded net after a misunderstanding with goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as Celtic tried to play their way out under Brugge’s pressing. Celtic, after home wins over Slovan Bratislava and RB Leipzig, were seeking another to push them closer to a first appearance in the knockout rounds since 2013. Reo Hatate drilled narrowly wide early in the second half but it was his fellow Japan international Maeda who brought Celtic level on the hour. After turning away from his marker inside the area, Maeda whipped a curling effort in off the far post for his third goal in the competition this season. Brugge thought they had regained the lead with 20 minutes to play but Jutgla’s strike was ruled out for a tight offside, with both teams currently in position to advance from the league phase. Celtic are 20th in the 36-team standings on eight points, while Brugge are two places and one point behind. LATE DRAMA AS VILLA MADE TO SETTLE FOR A DRAW In other news, Emiliano Martinez produced a wonder save and Aston Villa were controversially denied a last-gasp winner as they played out a 0-0 draw with Juventus. Chances were at a premium in Birmingham but the home side had Argentina international Martinez to thank for keeping the scores level. Unai Emery’s Villa raced out of the blocks in Europe this season, winning their first three matches, but they have now failed to any of their past seven games in all competitions. Emery made it clear before the match that a draw would not be a bad result against the Italian giants as he plots an exit from the revamped group stage. Juventus, playing without a recognised striker, enjoyed the bulk of possession in the early stages but showed little punch against the home side. The game opened up as the first half progressed. Teenager Kenan Yildiz drifted in from the left but dragged his shot wide of Martinez’s right-hand post in the 20th minute. The first shot on target for either side came when Ollie Watkins controlled a clever Boubacar Kamara pass in the 37th minute but Juventus goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio pushed the ball behind. Matty Cash lashed a shot towards goal from the resulting corner but it hit a Juventus player and the Italians broke with pace, Timothy Weah, playing up front, firing over from distance. Martinez then kept out a shot from the impressive Francisco Conceicao. But Villa came closest to breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time when Lucas Digne rattled the crossbar from a free-kick. Both teams showed more urgency early in the second half as the game picked up pace, with the home crowd trying to lift Villa. Two-time champions Juventus had a glorious chance to take the lead in the 65th minute when the ball fell to Conceicao at the back post from a corner. He got his effort on target but somehow Martinez made up ground to his right, diving low to keep the ball out, millimetres short of crossing the line. Five minutes later Villa were denied when Bailey crossed for John McGinn, whose shot was kept out by the outstretched boot of Manuel Locatelli. Villa thought they had won the match in the final seconds when Morgan Rogers hooked in from close range after a Youri Tielemans free-kick. But the officials ruled there had been a foul on the goalkeeper. Villa, playing their first season in the Europe’s top-tier competition since the 1982/83 season, started their campaign with three wins, including a memorable 1-0 triumph against Bayern Munich before defeat at Club Brugge. Juventus now have two wins, two draws and a defeat. DORTMUND GET IT DONE WITH EASE Elsewhere, goals from Jamie Gittens, Ramy Bensebaini and Serhou Guirassy took Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb. English winger Gittens opened the scoring with a stunning long-range solo effort before half-time, shooting in from the edge of the box. Bensebaini headed in a Pascal Gross corner early in the second half and Guirassy came off the bench to add a third late, sealing the result. The win, Dortmund’s first away victory in any competition since September, sent them into the top four and all but sealed at least a spot in the knockout rounds. One concern for Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin will be Julian Brandt’s fitness ahead of the weekend’s game against Bayern Munich. “I hope it’s not too bad. Brandt is extremely important for our game,” Sahin said, adding the 28-year-old was “almost irreplaceable”. Midfielder Brandt, captaining the side with Emre Can on the bench, was replaced after limping off before half-time with a reported thigh injury. Zagreb had rebounded in the Champions League after an opening round 9-2 thrashing at the hands of Dortmund’s German rivals Bayern, winning two and drawing another to climb into the knockout places. The home fans welcomed last season’s Champions League finalists with loud fireworks in a stadium still showing scars of a 2020 earthquake, with its capacity reduced by 14,000 due to fears of collapse. The visitors, on a run of six straight away losses in all competitions, took a while to get started, Zagreb’s Ronael Pierre-Gabriel blasting just over the bar on the counter and startling Dortmund into life. Donyell Malen hit the crossbar after 28 minutes. Gittens found Malen unmarked and one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 41st minute but the Dutchman headed wide. Seconds later, Gittens took matters into his own hands, dribbling past three defenders to give himself space before unleashing a superb dipping strike into the top right corner. Still just 20, the goal was Gittens’ fourth in his fifth Champions League game this campaign. Gross found Bensebaini from a corner just after half-time for Dortmund’s second, the Algerian standing tall and heading past the Zagreb keeper. With one eye on Saturday’s clash with Bayern, Sahin made three changes with half an hour remaining, including bringing on Guirassy as he returned from illness. The Guinean showed excellent touch to seal the match with a goal in the final minute, to match Gittens’ tally of four in five Champions League games. Dortmund have now won four of five outings in the Champions League, other than their 5-2 humbling in the Champions League final rematch against Real Madrid in October.Algert Global LLC Has $769,000 Holdings in StoneX Group Inc. NoneKINGSTON, Jamaica — The Duhaney Park Community Development Committee (CDC) marked its 60th anniversary with a grand celebration and award dinner recognising 15 individuals for their outstanding contributions to the community over the years. Hosted at Pollyanna’s Caterers, the event brought together residents, community leaders, and other dignitaries who were crucial to the construction and development of Duhaney Park. In his opening address, Godfrey Williams, president of the CDC, highlighted the significance of the evening, noting that the awardees were being celebrated for their unwavering commitment and dedication. “This evening, we will have the privilege to recognise the tireless, incredible contributions of some wonderful human beings that over the years have shaped this community,” Williams said. He spoke of the resilience embedded in the people, which, he said, has defined Duhaney Park since its establishment in the early 1960s, when it was created to meet the housing demands of an urbanising population. “In sculpting the form and the framework that drives our community, they have cloaked our space with resilience. We are resilient, and our desire to overcome the tremendous stresses of life that are hurled us is the epitome of resolve,” he said. Among the awardees were Dr Noel Watson, the Social Development Commission, the National Solid Waste Management Authority and Wihcon (West Indies Home Contractors) who were presented with special awards. Presented with honorary donor awards were Hardware & Lumber, K’s Pharmacy, and the Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) Joan Duncan Foundation. Category awards were also presented to Earl Jones for volunteerism; BelliBuss Restaurant for entrepreneurship and innovation; Michelle Dixon for education and mentorship; Nurse Palmer for health; Michael Montague for exceptional dedication and leadership in youth service; Luther Blade for sports, Thompson Beckford, JP for philanthropy and Yvonne Jacobs, who was presented with a surprise award as the longest living resident. Keynote speaker Damion Hylton, a community transformation specialist, reflected on the community’s evolution during his speech. “Your community has gone through many different seasons. From its inception when people were looking at Duhaney Park as the ideal place to live...And then as your community started to blossom and working class people started to participate in family life and community life, your community started to experience its own kind of ethos and character formation,” Hylton noted. He continued, “And then you had war and gang activity breaking out in different sections of your community. The community became a place where a lot of people started to wonder if they made the right investment. And then of course you had interventions and you had people who made sacrifices and the thing settled down again and Duhaney Park nice again.” Noting that communities, like individuals, go through seasons, Hylton said the people of the community were what determined its success. “The fibre and the fabric of Duhaney Park is the result of some people who have been here from the inception. So when you gather this evening celebrating 60 years and honouring the accomplishments and the resilience of the people, I want to suggest to you that you couldn’t get it any better because it is the resilience of the people who have chosen to stay in a community regardless of the season that the community is going through,” Hylton said. Accepting the Wihcon award on behalf of his family, Joseph Matalon commented, “I remember the four Matalons that were basically responsible for this project. Mayer was the financier, Moses was the conceptualiser, Aaron, my father, was the marketer, and Owen was the builder. And that team cooked together not only this particular project but Harbour View and Mona Heights and went on into the Independent City.” Former executive director of a National Civic Dialogue Initiative under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Dr Noel Watson, shared his memories of working with Duhaney Park more than 20 years ago. “I was invited to the community and we dialogued...There were people from JLP, PNP, all walks of life because the whole point of these civic dialogue programs is to get people to dialogue to reduce crime, to reduce unemployment, and to reduce corruption. And the Duhaney Park CDC was so strong, they invited me into their homes and we dialogued, and they were just such a faithful, loyal community. So it doesn’t surprise me that after 60 years we’re doing this,” Dr Watson said. In his address, Member of Parliament (MP) for St Andrew Western, Anthony Hylton, encouraged the community to continue working with the CDC for more years to come. “Duhaney Park still stands as a community that is vibrant, it’s alive, and I believe its best future is ahead of us. The point I wish to make is that the CDC by itself cannot do the work unless its citizens are engaged and themselves respond,” MP Hylton said. — Kelsey Thomas
Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday requested veteran activist Dr Baba Adhav in Pune to call off his protest against alleged misuse of EVMs in the recent state polls, saying that the verdict should be accepted. The ruling Mahayuti had fared badly in the Lok Sabha elections but did not question the Electronic Voting Machines, the Nationalist Congress Party chief said, sitting next to 95-year-old Adhav. "In the Lok Sabha polls, Maha Vikas Aghadi won 31 seats (out of 48 in Maharashtra) while we got 17 seats. We accepted the people's mandate. We did not make any allegations about EVMs. In Baramati, my candidate (wife Sunetra Pawar) lost by more than 1.4 lakh votes, while in the assembly election, I won by one lakh votes," said Pawar. As to state Congress chief Nana Patole's claim that voting percentage suddenly spiked just before the polling concluded, Pawar said it was up to voters to decide when to step out for voting. He, however, agreed that a discussion needs to take place. Garner, who was the only occupant in the vehicle he was driving, was taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was injured and treated at the same hospital. The South Carolina Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY. Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee wrote Tuesday that Garner was being pursued by a Marlboro County sheriff's deputy at the time of the crash. "The pursuit was not related to any laws being broken," Hardee wrote in the statement, which was posted to his . "The pursuit was taking place in an effort to protect the well being of Mr. Garner." Hardee wrote that the crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol's Major Accident Investigation Team. Attempts to contact the Marlboro County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday were unsuccessful. Last month, McColl's police chief and four other law enforcement officials, comprising the entirety of the town's police force, resigned, citing "'unwanted and malicious behavior,'" in a message posted to social media that has since been removed, according to . The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division confirmed Wednesday that Garner remains the subject of an active and ongoing investigation, but did not disclose any further details. .
