Levis throws 2 TD passes to help Titans outlast Texans 32-27Kok Yufeng, Correspondent Based on MOM’s latest figures, there are more than 440,000 migrant workers in Singapore – the majority of whom are housed in over 1,500 dorms scattered across the island. SINGAPORE – Lockers for personal belongings? Check. Single beds? Check. Private spaces for personal calls? Check. As far as Mr Sumun Biswas, 44, is concerned, a new government-owned migrant worker dormitory that will open in early 2026 checks all the boxes. Since August 2023, the Bangladeshi hydraulic operator has been involved in consultations with the authorities on how migrant worker housing here can be improved. He was thus happy to see his views put into practice at the upcoming dorm in Tukang Innovation Lane in Jurong. It is the first of two purpose-built dorms to be constructed and owned by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). “We are happy, from our heart,” he said, when asked for a review of the dorm’s features. The dorm will also have an en-suite toilet and free Wi-Fi in every room, in addition to spacious kitchens on every floor. It is a dream come true for Mr Biswas and the dozens of migrant workers who took part in the design process. It is also a significant move by MOM to show the wider industry what is possible with some forethought and ingenuity. But there are caveats. First, while the improved design of the Tukang dorm is an important step towards raising the bar for migrant worker housing, the day that every worker in Singapore gets to live in such a conducive environment is still more than 15 years away. In 2021, MOM imposed a new set of regulatory standards on newly built dorms to improve liveability and boost their ability to contain disease outbreaks. But in the light of infrastructural constraints and concerns over higher costs, existing dorms have until 2040 to meet the full set of requirements. This means many workers here will still have to put up with less than ideal conditions for the foreseeable future. Second, some of the new features at MOM’s Tukang dorm, such as the provision of single beds, are over and above what the new dorm standards stipulate. This is part of an effort to drive innovation in migrant workers’ living spaces. The ministry said the alternative design of its Tukang dorm has drawn keen interest from some dorm operators. But whether these operators ultimately follow MOM’s lead to do more than meet the new standards remains a question mark. And only time will tell if privately run dorms will also adopt MOM’s approach of consulting workers and taking into account what they want and need. Mr Sumun Biswas, a hydraulic operator from Bangladesh, was involved in consultations with officials here on how migrant worker housing here can be improved. ST PHOTO: BRIAN TEO More work to be done To MOM’s credit, after the Covid-19 pandemic laid bare the cramped, often unsanitary conditions in dorms here, the ministry made a stronger push to improve the living environment of migrant workers. It quickly introduced the new dorm standards, which include a cap of 12 residents in each room, at least 4.2 sq m of personal living space per resident and mandatory en-suite toilets. MOM also expanded the scope of the Foreign Employee Dormitories Act to include all dorms with seven beds or more, giving the law more teeth. Today, about 200 dorms with a combined capacity of 70,000 beds already meet the new standards. In addition, seven new purpose-built dorms with a total of 47,000 beds are also being built to the new requirements. These include MOM’s new Tukang dorm and its other dorm in Sengkang West that will be completed around mid-2028. Still, the positive developments so far come from just a fraction of the dorms here, and other dorms have their work cut out for them. Based on MOM’s latest figures, there are more than 440,000 migrant workers in Singapore – the majority of whom are housed in more than 1,500 dorms scattered across the island. Of the existing dorms, about 1,000 are required to adopt the new standards by 2040. Exemptions have been given to between 200 and 250 temporary quarters, and around 200 dorms with leases expiring in 2033 or earlier. The ministry said taking a phased approach will give existing dorms enough time to adopt the new standards, and minimise the disruption to the supply of dorm beds. The lengthy transition period may be a bitter pill to swallow – given the state some dorms are in – but it is not without basis. Post-pandemic, the migrant worker population in Singapore has swelled to a record high. And it remains a challenge for employers to find suitable accommodation for their foreign workers. Centurion Corporation, one of Singapore’s largest dorm operators, reported a 99 per cent occupancy rate in the first half of 2024 – a sign of the tight bed supply that has, in turn, caused rental rates to skyrocket. The worry is that retrofitting too many existing dorms too quickly will cause bed supply to shrink, increasing rental rates further. The other major hurdle is the sheer variety of dorms, and the amount of retrofitting needed to bring all of them up to speed. While it is easier for some to carry out upgrades, others have said meeting the new requirements would mean a complete teardown of their facilities. Manpower Minister Tan See Leng summed up these constraints on Nov 17: “We all wish... (that with) the snap of a finger, everything can come into being. “But the fact is that we also need to take into consideration the constraints of the space that we have.” Dr Tan also pointed to the backlog of public housing, construction and manufacturing projects as another reason for pacing dorm upgrades. As a compromise, MOM has mandated that most dorms meet at least a set of interim requirements by 2030 , citing the need to mitigate the growing risk of large-scale disease outbreaks. The ministry said in September that 14 dorms with a combined capacity of 100,000 beds have already started work to upgrade their facilities or told MOM of their plans to do so. Some of the new features at MOM’s Tukang dormitory are over and above what the new dorm standards stipulate. ST PHOTO: BRIAN TEO What’s next? While there may be legitimate constraints on what can be done in terms of infrastructure, it does not mean the quality of life of migrant workers here cannot be improved in the meantime. Migrant rights groups have long called for more to be done to improve the way food is delivered to workers and the quality of the catered food. Providing basic appliances such as refrigerators, for example, would make it easier for workers to store perishable groceries and keep pests away. Many dorms are in remote areas, so providing workers with adequate transport options is another way to ensure their needs are better met. Then there are other longstanding issues related to unpaid wages, workplace injuries and wrongful termination. MOM’s new dorm standards should also not be the be-all and end-all of the future of migrant worker housing. The new Tukang dorm is a case in point. MOM eschewed its own requirement of at least 1m of space between beds there, so that it could accommodate a mix of single and double beds, and carve out dedicated space in each room for socialisation – things that workers had asked for. To surmount the regulatory hurdle, MOM roped in A*Star to provide empirical evidence that the new room layout still meets public health standards. With the ministry showing its willingness to be flexible with the letter of the law to allow for alternative dorm designs that improve liveability, the ball is now in the industry’s court to effect real change, and not just do the bare minimum. As MOM also showed, the key to this is getting migrant workers involved in the design process, and putting their needs front and centre. Not only does this give dorm residents greater ownership over their living spaces, it also helps to identify gaps that may otherwise go unnoticed. For instance, a research project by three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – Here With You Social Services, Soap Cycling Singapore and Migrant Workers Singapore – found a strong desire among workers for bedside tables and personal lights so they can read and write at night. These fittings are not stipulated under the law. The groups also said in their report published in June that MOM’s new standards still fall short of what workers expect their ideal dorms to look like, especially in terms of occupancy limits and personal space. In addition, the NGOs noted that without an independent and safe channel for workers to offer feedback, MOM’s improved standards risk becoming a one-off exercise. All this is to say that raising migrant worker housing standards in Singapore on paper is a step in the right direction. But for meaningful improvements to workers’ living conditions to be made, the industry must put the needs and dignity of workers first. Jake Paul wants “to set the record straight,” when no straightening is required. If anyone would understand that we moved on from his “fight” against Mike Tyson, it should be Paul, who has made a fortune in the split-second entertainment world of social media. Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions issued a statement on Monday to dispel the rumor that his fight at AT&T Stadium on Nov. 15 against Tyson was rigged. The intention is to change the narrative of what was an embarrassing, if highly profitable, evening, and maintain the interest in Paul’s boxing career. The fight was not rigged, and no statement was needed. The fight was simply awful. The statement begins: “Following the wide circulation of incorrect and baseless claims that undermine the integrity of the Paul vs. Tyson event, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) would like to set the record straight regarding the contractual agreements and the nature of the fight.” “Integrity” and “Tyson v. Paul” have no business of being in the same sentence. “Rigging a professional boxing match is a federal crime in the United States of America. Paul vs. Tyson was a professional match sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR). Both fighters in good faith performed to the best of their abilities with the goal of winning the fight,” the statement said. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations did sanction this kitten fight between a Disney kid turned YouTuber against a 58-year-old man with serious health issues. The fight had judges, and Paul was awarded a decision when none was needed. “Best of their abilities” is subjective. After landing one of his first punches, a left to Paul’s head, Tyson looked like he may have something in what was once one of the most feared boxers who ever lived. He flashed some of that old Tyson head movement, but mostly he looked like an old boxer. Because that’s what he is. The event quickly became an awkward money grab embarrassment, an indictment on the ticket-buying audience more than the promoters, who were doing their job, and leaving Netflix blushing over streaming issues. “There were absolutely no restrictions – contractual or otherwise – around either fighter. Each boxer was able to use his full arsenal to win the fight. Any agreement to the contrary would violate TDLR boxing rules,” the statement said. No restrictions is a liberal use of the term. The fight was eight rounds, not 10 or 12. The rounds lasted two minutes, not three. The gloves the boxers used were 14 oz., not 10. President Jimmy Carter could take a few shots from a 14 oz. glove. The statement continues, “Trash talk and speculation are common in sports, and athletes and promoters need to tolerate nonsensical commentary, jokes and opinions. But suggesting anything other than full effort from these fighters is not only naïve but an insult to the work they put into their craft and to the sport itself.” Accusations of rigged outcomes have been hurled at sporting events in the United States since the New York Nine defeated the Knickerbockers 23-1 in four innings, the first recorded baseball game ever played in America, in 1846. The New York Nine did not release a statement to the press that the game was rigged. Such accusations are hallow, but every now and then there is a Chicago Black Sox. “It is further illogical and inane that MVP, in the debut of a hopeful long-term partnership with the world’s biggest streamer—an organization that made its first-ever foray into live professional sports with Paul vs. Tyson—would even so much as consider such a perverse violation of the rules of competition,” the statement said. That’s not how rigged works. You don’t tell the broadcast partner that the live event is staged. Making sure his boss knows he’s working, MVP co-founder Nakisa Bidarian issued his own words to this statement, saying, “This is not the first time Jake Paul has faced unfounded skepticism or outright disbelief as a professional athlete, and frankly, the claim that his bout must have been rigged is just the latest backhanded compliment to come his way.” Paul, 27, beat a 58-year-old man in a fight that looked like two-hand touch. There is no compliment. “From day one in this sport, people have doubted his abilities — unable to reconcile how someone with his background has accomplished so much in such a short time. Jake has not only proven himself repeatedly, but he has continuously set historic records that speak for themselves,” Bidarian wrote. Paul has created a niche for himself in the sport by carefully fighting opponents who are names, but are not boxers. Older guys. Ex-UFC fighters looking for one more check. He’s also spent the necessary time to train, and learn how to box. He knows how to promote himself, and an event. He created “boxing entertainment,” but his fights are not traditional boxing matches. They are also not scripted WWE. “As long as Jake continues to exceed expectations, there will always be those who try to discredit his achievements.” Bidarian said. “We embrace the doubt — it only fuels Jake to work harder and achieve greater success.” Herein lies the “need” for this press statement. Paul wants to continue to fight, but not against fighters who may knock him out. Considering the type of money his fights have generated, he would have no problem finding a line of potential traditional opponents waiting to pummel him through the canvas. He has avoided real fighters for a reason. Because he’s smart. Because he can. Because there is a market for the fights he stages. The fallout from his bout against Tyson is that Paul could have unintentionally knocked out the audience for these matches that are staged, not rigged, which is really why he wants to “set the record straight.” ©2024 Fort Worth Star-Telegram. As Hambantota International Port (HIP) gears up to enhance its container operations with the introduction of advanced crane technology in early February 2025, Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) CEO Wilson Qu emphasised the port’s commitment to exploring untapped markets to expand its portfolio. This strategic initiative aims to significantly boost container volumes and solidify Sri Lanka’s position as a competitive force in global maritime trade. To achieve this, the port is implementing a comprehensive seaside and landside strategy designed to position HIP’s container division strategically for future growth. The port’s landside strategy is progressing actively to attract investors to its industrial zone. Recently, an agreement was signed to establish a sponge-mattress factory within the zone. This business, targeting export markets in the USA, Europe, and Canada, marks a significant milestone as the first agreement finalised since the port launched container operations. Currently, the port is handling an increasing number of inquiries and anticipates finalising several additional agreements in 2025. The industrial zone is poised to create substantial employment opportunities while fostering a collaborative environment where Sri Lankan entrepreneurs can either partner with international companies or invest independently to meet rising international demand. HIPG’s industrial zone will also generate more gateway cargo, drawing liners to the port and significantly enhancing connectivity. This initiative provides a considerable logistical advantage for cargo originating in the region, further solidifying the port’s role as a strategic hub in global trade. “Hambantota Port’s strategic location on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, combined with the island’s central position along key maritime routes, offers a unique opportunity to attract customers who may not have previously considered Sri Lanka a viable option,” the CEO explained, emphasising that HIPG’s strategy goes beyond geopolitical influences and traditional market segmentation. “Instead, our focus is on delivering competitive commercial rates and exceptional service with investment in infrastructure and superstructure, because we are well aware that the port cannot rely solely on its location.” As part of its seaside strategy, the port is entering the relay cargo market, representing a new opportunity for the country, which has a set goal to handle 10 million TEUs between 2025 and 2026. HIPG is also targeting the region’s container market, particularly transhipment. Currently, more than 70% of containerised cargo from the BIMSTEC countries bypasses Sri Lankan ports, presenting a substantial opportunity for HIP to capture a significant portion of this untapped market. Through aggressive and strategic marketing to this segment, HIP aims to position itself as a key hub and unlock untapped potential in the region. Relay cargo refers to the transfer of cargo between two ships at an intermediate port, which involves vessels from the same carrier. It is a strategic move aimed at improving operational efficiency and connecting services across different regions. By utilising an intermediate port, shipping lines can optimise their routes, streamline operations, and reduce overall transit times. In contrast, transhipment involves the movement of cargo between ships — often from different carriers, at an intermediate hub port when there is no direct route between the origin and the destination. By leveraging Sri Lanka’s strategic location and offering tailored landside and seaside solutions for container operations, the Hambantota International Port is poised to redefine regional shipping dynamics and establish itself as a major player in the global logistics sector.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Republican gubernatorial nominee Mark Robinson vowed on Thursday to remain in the race despite a CNN report that he posted strongly worded racial and sexual comments on an online message board, saying he won’t be forced out by “salacious tabloid lies.” Robinson, the sitting lieutenant governor who decisively won his GOP gubernatorial primary in March, has been trailing in several recent polls to Democratic nominee Josh Stein, the current attorney general. “We are staying in this race. We are in it to win it,” Robinson said in a video posted Thursday on the social media platform X. “And we know that with your help, we will.” Robinson referenced in the video a story that he said CNN was running, but he didn’t give details. “Let me reassure you the things that you will see in that story — those are not the words of Mark Robinson,” he said. “You know my words. You know my character.” The CNN report describes a series of racial and sexual comments Robinson posted on the message board of a pornography website more than a decade ago. CNN reported that Robinson, who would be North Carolina’s first Black governor, attacked civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in searing terms and once referred to himself as a “black NAZI.” CNN also reported that Robinson wrote of being aroused by a memory of “peeping” women in gym showers when he was 14 along with an appreciation of transgender pornography. Robinson at one point referred to himself as a “perv,” according to CNN. The Associated Press has not independently confirmed that Robinson wrote and posted the messages. CNN said it matched details of the account on the pornographic website forum to other online accounts held by Robinson by comparing usernames, a known email address and his full name. CNN reported that details discussed by the account holder matched Robinson’s age, length of marriage and other biographical information. It also compared figures of speech that were used in his public Facebook profile and that appeared in discussions by the account on the pornographic website. Media outlets already have reported about a 2021 speech by Robinson in a church in which he used the word “filth” when discussing gay and transgender people. Robinson has a history of inflammatory comments that Stein has said made him too extreme to lead North Carolina. They already have contributed to the prospect that campaign struggles for Robinson would hurt former President Donald Trump to win the battleground state’s 16 electoral votes, and potential other GOP downballot candidates. Recent polls of North Carolina voters show Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris locked in a close race. The same polls show Stein with a roughly 10-point lead over Robinson. Stein and his allies have repeatedly cited a Facebook post from 2019 in which Robinson said abortion in America was about “killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.” The Stein campaign said in a statement after the report that “North Carolinians already know Mark Robinson is completely unfit to be Governor.” State law says a gubernatorial nominee could withdraw as a candidate no later than the day before the first absentee ballots requested by military and overseas voters are distributed. That begins Friday, so the withdrawal deadline would be late Thursday. State Republican leaders could then pick a replacement. Trump has frequently voiced his support for Robinson, who has been considered a rising star in his party, well-known for his fiery speeches and evocative rhetoric. Ahead of the March primary, Trump at a rally in Greensboro called Robinson “Martin Luther King on steroids” for his speaking ability. Trump’s campaign appears to be distancing itself from Robinson in the wake of the report. In a statement to the AP, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the GOP nominee’s campaign “is focused on winning the White House and saving this country,” calling North Carolina “a vital part of that plan.” Leavitt went on to contrast Trump’s economic record with that of Harris, not mentioning Robinson by name or answering questions as to whether he would appear with Trump at a Saturday campaign rally in Wilmington, or had been invited to do so. A spokesperson for Harris’ campaign, Ammar Moussa, said on X that “Donald Trump has a Mark Robinson problem” and reposted a photo of the two together. The North Carolina Republican Party defended Robinson in a statement on X, saying that despite his denial of CNN’s report, it wouldn’t “stop the Left from trying to demonize him via personal attacks.” The party referred to economic and immigration policies as the predominant election issues North Carolinians will care more about instead. “The Left needs this election to be a personality contest, not a policy contest because if voters focused on policy, Republicans win on Election Day,” the party said. Scott Lassiter, a Republican state Senate candidate in a Raleigh-area swing district, did call on Robinson to “suspend his campaign to allow a quality candidate to finish this race.” Ed Broyhill, a North Carolina member of the Republican National Committee, said he spoke to Robinson Thursday afternoon and still supports him as the nominee. In an interview, Broyhill suggested the online details may have been fabricated. “It seems like a dirty trick to me,” Broyhill said. On Capitol Hill, U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, chair of the House GOP’s campaign committee, told reporters the report’s findings were “concerning.” Robinson, he said, has some reassuring to do in the state. Robinson, 56, was elected lieutenant governor in his first bid for public office in 2020. He tells a life story of childhood poverty, jobs that he blames the North American Free Trade Agreement for ending, and personal bankruptcy. His four-minute speech to the Greensboro City Council defending gun rights and lamenting the “demonizing” of police officers went viral — and led him to a National Rifle Association board position and popularity among conservative voters. ___ This story was first published on Sep. 19, 2024. It was updated on Nov. 22, 2024 to correct which of Robinson’s social media accounts CNN cited in a comparison to language in messages from a pornographic website message board.

CNN cited his public Facebook account, not his Twitter account. ___ Associated Press writer Meg Kinnard in Chapin, South Carolina, and Congressional Correspondent Lisa Mascaro in Washington contributed to this report.
