NoneTina Knowles is making it clear she hasn't weighed in on son-in-law Jay-Z 's current legal woes ... posting a pointed response after her social media activity was called out. Beyoncé 's mother posted to Instagram on Monday after reports began pointing out that the Knowles matriarch "liked" a post detailing the rape allegation made against Jay-Z and Diddy in a recent lawsuit. However, as Tina claimed in a note shared to Instagram, she was not the person who liked the news post ... as she said she was "hacked" prior to the social media activity. She continued ... "As you all know, I do not play about my family. So if you see something uncharacteristic of me. Just know that it is not me!" Bey's mother issued another warning in the caption of her post, adding ... "Please stop playing with me!!!! 'No weapon formed against my family shall prosper.'" While Tina and Beyoncé have remained tight-lipped regarding the allegation, Jay-Z issued a heated response Sunday evening ... calling the lawsuit "heinous" and "a blackmail attempt." Diddy's lawyers also spoke out against the lawsuit -- which claimed the rap moguls drugged and raped a 13-year-old at an MTV VMAs after-party in 2000 -- calling it a "shameless publicity stunt." Attorney Tony Buzbee , who filed the suit on behalf of the anonymous accuser and other Diddy accusers, responded by accusing Jay-Z of trying to "bully and harass me and this plaintiff." Jay-Z has since filed a motion asking a judge to force the plaintiff to reveal herself . We're sure more developments are to come ... so, stay tuned.

Monday, December 23, 2024 Amtrak travellers across the Northeast Corridor are experiencing significant delays following a major service disruption caused by downed wires on tracks in Philadelphia. This issue has affected train operations between New York’s Penn Station and Philadelphia, creating widespread rail congestion during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. With Christmas and Hanukkah just days away, these delays come at an especially inconvenient time for holiday travelers. The problem began over the weekend, halting service between key stations in New York and Philadelphia. Although limited operations resumed on Sunday afternoon, delays persisted throughout the day and into Monday morning. Amtrak has reported that signal power issues are causing ongoing disruptions along the Northeast Corridor, particularly in and out of New York. The single-tracking conditions implemented to manage traffic have further contributed to delays, impacting trains operating between Washington, D.C., and Boston. This disruption has led to rail congestion across the entire network, creating ripple effects for passengers on long-distance routes. For travelers relying on Amtrak to reach their holiday destinations, the situation has caused frustration and uncertainty. Discover everything and anything about travel , tourism , trade shows at the Travel And Tour World , including breaking travel news and weekly travel updates for travel trade , airlines , cruise , railways , technology , travel association , DMCs, and video interviews and promotional videos . In response to the challenges, Amtrak has canceled several services, particularly those traveling to and from Boston. The company is actively working to resolve the issue, but no specific timeline has been provided for the restoration of full operations. To ease the burden on affected passengers, Amtrak has implemented several measures: Travelers are strongly advised to monitor the status of their reservations and plan for potential disruptions to their journeys. This disruption comes during a peak travel period, as families and individuals make their way across the Northeast for Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations. The Northeast Corridor is one of Amtrak’s busiest routes, connecting major metropolitan areas such as Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. The delays have not only affected regular commuters but also holiday travelers relying on train services to avoid crowded airports and highways. With the holiday season in full swing, the timing of these disruptions has added to the stress of travel. Many passengers have reported difficulties in finding alternative transportation options, as bus and air travel networks are already operating at capacity. The downed wires in Philadelphia have caused significant challenges for Amtrak’s operations team, which has been working around the clock to restore service. However, the single-tracking conditions currently in place have limited the number of trains that can pass through critical sections of the network. This has created bottlenecks in high-traffic areas, particularly around New York Penn Station, which serves as a central hub for the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak is coordinating closely with local transportation agencies and utility providers to repair the damaged infrastructure. However, the complex nature of the repairs means that it may take time to fully restore normal operations. Amtrak has issued the following recommendations for travelers impacted by the disruption: Discover everything and anything about travel , tourism , trade shows at the Travel And Tour World , including breaking travel news and weekly travel updates for travel trade , airlines , cruise , railways , technology , travel association , DMCs, and video interviews and promotional videos . The issues facing Amtrak highlight the vulnerability of critical rail infrastructure in the United States, particularly in high-traffic corridors like the Northeast. While the company is actively working to address the immediate problem, the situation underscores the need for long-term investments in rail infrastructure to ensure reliability and resilience during peak travel periods. Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor is a vital transportation link for millions of passengers each year, and disruptions like these can have significant economic and logistical consequences. With growing demand for rail travel, particularly as a more sustainable alternative to driving or flying, ensuring the reliability of these routes will be increasingly important. As Amtrak continues to address the downed wires and related signal issues, travelers should prepare for ongoing delays and cancellations. While the company has made efforts to accommodate passengers and minimize inconvenience, the full resolution of the issue will take time. In the meantime, passengers are encouraged to remain flexible with their travel plans and explore alternative options where possible. For those who rely on Amtrak for their holiday travel, patience and preparation will be key to navigating this challenging period. Twisted Edison: Filaments curling at the nanoscale produce light waves that twirl as they travelPolice arrested a 26-year-old man on Monday in the Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO after they say a Pennsylvania McDonald's worker alerted authorities to a customer who resembled the suspected gunman. The suspect, identified by police as Luigi Nicholas Mangione, had a gun believed to be the one used in Wednesday’s attack on Brian Thompson , as well as writings expressing anger at corporate America, police said. Here are some of the latest developments in the investigation: Mangione was taken into custody at around 9:15 a.m. after police received a tip that he was eating at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 85 miles (137 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh, police said. Mangione was being held in Pennsylvania on gun charges and will eventually be extradited to New York to face charges in connection with Thompson’s death , said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. In addition to a three-page, handwritten document that suggests he harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” Kenny said Mangione also had a ghost gun, a type of weapon that can be assembled at home and is difficult to trace. Officers questioned Mangione, who was acting suspiciously and carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. Officers also found a sound suppressor, or silencer, “consistent with the weapon used in the murder,” the commissioner said. He had clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the shooter and a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching one the suspect used to check into a New York City hostel before the shooting, Tisch said. Kenny said Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, has ties to San Francisco and that his last known address is in Honolulu. Mangione, who was valedictorian of his Maryland prep school, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science in 2020 from the University of Pennsylvania, a university spokesman told The Associated Press on Monday. He learned to code in high school and helped start a club at Penn for people interested in gaming and game design, according to a 2018 story in Penn Today, a campus publication. His social media posts also suggest that he belonged to the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. They also show him taking part in a 2019 program at Stanford University, and in photos with family and friends at the Jersey Shore and in Hawaii, San Diego, Puerto Rico, and other destinations. The Gilman School, from which Mangione graduated in 2016, is one of Baltimore’s elite prep schools. Some of the city’s wealthiest and most prominent people, including Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr., have had children attend the school. Its alumni include sportswriter Frank Deford and former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington. In his valedictory speech, Luigi Mangione described his classmates’ “incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things,” according to a post on the school website. He praised their collective inventiveness and pioneering mindset. Mangione took a software programming internship after high school at Maryland-based video game studio Firaxis, where he fixed bugs on the hit strategy game Civilization 6, according to a LinkedIn profile. Firaxis parent company Take-Two Interactive said Monday it would not comment on former employees. He more recently worked at the car-buying website TrueCar, according to the head of the Santa Monica, California-based company. “While we generally don’t comment on personnel matters, we confirm that Luigi Mangione has not been an employee of our company since 2023,” TrueCar CEO Jantoon Reigersman said by email. Mangione comes from a prominent Maryland family. His grandfather Nick Mangione, who died in 2008, was a successful real estate developer. One of his best-known projects was Turf Valley Resort, a sprawling luxury retreat and conference center outside Baltimore that he purchased in 1978. The father of 10 children, Nick Mangione prepared his five sons — including Luigi Mangione’s father, Louis Mangione — to help manage the family business, according to a 2003 Washington Post report. The Mangione family also purchased Hayfields Country Club north of Baltimore in 1986. On Monday, Baltimore County police officers blocked off an entrance to the property, which public records link to Luigi Mangione’s parents. Reporters and photographers gathered outside the entrance. Luigi Mangione is one of 37 grandchildren of Nick Mangione, according to the grandfather's obituary. Luigi Mangione's grandparents donated to charities through the Mangione Family Foundation, according to a statement from Loyola University commemorating Nick Mangione’s wife’s death in 2023. They donated to various causes ranging from Catholic organizations to colleges and the arts. One of Luigi Mangione’s cousins is Republican Maryland state legislator Nino Mangione, a spokesman for the lawmaker's office confirmed Monday. Police said the person who killed Thompson left a hostel on Manhattan's Upper West Side at 5:41 a.m. on Wednesday. Just 11 minutes later, he was seen on surveillance video walking back and forth in front of the New York Hilton Midtown, wearing a distinctive backpack. At 6:44 a.m., he shot Thompson at a side entrance to the hotel, fled on foot, then climbed aboard a bicycle and within four minutes had entered Central Park. Another security camera recorded the gunman leaving the park near the American Museum of Natural History at 6:56 a.m. still on the bicycle but without the backpack. After getting in a taxi, he headed north to a bus terminal near the George Washington Bridge, arriving at around 7:30 a.m. From there, the trail of video evidence runs cold. Police have not located video of the suspect exiting the building, leading them to believe he likely took a bus out of town. Police said they are still investigating the path the suspect took to Pennsylvania. “This just happened this morning," Kenny said. "We’ll be working, backtracking his steps from New York to Altoona, Pennsylvania,” Kenny said. Associated Press reporters Lea Skene in Baltimore, Matt O'Brien in Providence, Rhode Island, and Cedar Attanasio in New York contributed to this report.
Philadelphia takes a starring role in " The Madness ," the limited series that hit Netflix on Thanksgiving. Though it was largely filmed in Toronto, the thriller is set here and stars West Philly's busiest actor, Colman Domingo . Reading Terminal Market, City Hall and Malcolm X Park appear in the show, and so does a Northwest Philly shop — just not its storefront. Uncle Bobbie's Coffee & Books earns a cameo in the fourth episode, when a character sports one of its T-shirts. "Netflix is not a small platform," Justin Moore, general manager at Uncle Bobbie's, said. "So it was like, wow, a lot of people are seeing our logo, some for the first time, some as like a friendly reminder, oh, that's the place I go to get my coffee, or that's the place I get my books from." A post shared by Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee & Books (@unclebobbies) The Germantown bookstore and cafe was founded in 2017 by Marc Lamont Hill — an author and TV personality, just like the lead character of "The Madness." Moore said Uncle Bobbie's has seen a bump in online sales since the show premiered, though he acknowledged holiday shopping could be a factor. What's more quantifiable, in his estimation, is the excitement. Loyal customers have been tagging Uncle Bobbie's in screenshots of the episode and hyping its appearance elsewhere on social media. "People who come to Uncle Bobbie's, they feel like they're a part of it," Moore said. "Like, you know when your favorite indie band goes big, right? It's like I was with them since the beginning. Now they're on Netflix." Uncle Bobbie's staffers were aware of the show's plans, but just barely. According to Moore, a producer contacted him in 2023 for permission to use a shirt with the shop's logo but offered only vague details on the project, like its name and star. Moore approved the request and mostly forgot about it until "The Madness" debuted and shot to the No. 1 streamed show on the platform. The series concerns a massive conspiracy that ensnares news pundit Muncie Daniels (Domingo). After he is framed for the murder of a white supremacist in the Poconos, Muncie tries to find the true culprit while on the run in Philadelphia. His estranged daughter Kallie (Gabrielle Graham), who has built her own life in North Philly, helps him hide. She's the one who sports the Uncle Bobbie's shirt. "Kallie definitely represents someone who would be an Uncle Bobbie's regular," Moore said. "She's very politically minded. Well read, cares very, very deeply about community and Black folks and Blackness. And that is obviously what Uncle Bobbie's is built on and stands for in terms of mission." This isn't the store's first brush with Hollywood. Kerry Washington has filmed interviews at Uncle Bobbie's, Moore said, and the shop also appeared in the HBO documentary "Stand Up and Shout: Songs from a Philly High School." The John Legend-produced film followed the students and teachers at Hill-Freedman World Academy as they recorded an album, and one of the instructors, Kristal Oliver , asked that her interviews be shot at Uncle Bobbie's. A post shared by Marc Lamont Hill (@marclamonthill) Still, Moore conceded "The Madness" feature is the shop's biggest exposure yet in terms of scale. He's hoping the visibility will inspire more customers to buy shirts like Kallie's as Philadelphians search for holiday gifts. NoneMELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The only emperor penguin known to have swum from Antarctica to Australia was released at sea 20 days after he waddled ashore on a popular tourist beach, officials said Friday. The adult male was found on Nov. 1 on Ocean Beach sand dunes in the town of Denmark in temperate southwest Australia — about 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) north of the icy waters off the Antarctic coast, the Western Australia state government said. He was released from a Parks and Wildlife Service boat on Wednesday. The boat traveled for several hours from the state’s most southerly city of Albany before the penguin was released into the Southern Ocean, but the government didn’t give the distance in its statement. He had been cared for by registered wildlife caregiver Carol Biddulph, who named him Gus after the first Roman emperor Augustus. “I really didn’t know whether he was going to make it to begin with because he was so undernourished,” Biddulph said in video recorded before the bird’s release but released by the government on Friday. “I’ll miss Gus. It’s been an incredible few weeks, something I wouldn’t have missed,” she added. Biddulph said she had found from caring for other species of lone penguins that mirrors were an important part of their rehabilitation by providing a comforting sense of company. “He absolutely loves his big mirror and I think that has been crucial in his well-being. They’re social birds and he stands next to the mirror most of the time,” she said. Other news outlets have retreated behind paywalls. At HuffPost, we believe journalism should be free for everyone. A healthy male emperor penguin can weigh more than 45 kilograms (100 pounds). The largest penguin species has never been reported in Australia before, University of Western Australia research fellow Belinda Cannell said, though some had reached New Zealand, nearly all of which is further south than Western Australia. The government said with the Southern Hemisphere summer approaching, it had been time-crucial to return Gus to the ocean where he could thermoregulate. Emperor penguins have been known to cover up to 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) on foraging journeys that last up to a month, the government said. South Korea's president apologised on Saturday for public anxiety caused by his short-lived attempt to impose martial law earlier this week, and said he would leave it to his conservative political party to chart a course through the turmoil left in its aftermath "including matters related to my term in office'', hours ahead of a parliamentary vote on impeaching him. Yoon said in a brief televised address on Saturday morning he won't shirk legal or political responsibility for the declaration and promised not to make another attempt to impose it, adding that he's "truly sorry" for causing public anxiety and inconvenience with his declaration of martial law earlier this week. South Korean lawmakers are set to vote later Saturday on impeaching President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived attempt to impose martial law, as protests grew nationwide calling for his removal. It wasn't immediately clear whether the motion submitted by opposition lawmakers would get the two-thirds majority required for Yoon to be impeached. But it appeared more likely after the leader of Yoon's own party on Friday called for suspending his constitutional powers, describing him as unfit to hold the office and capable of taking more extreme action, including renewed attempts to impose martial law. Impeaching Yoon would require support from 200 of the National Assembly's 300 members. The opposition parties that jointly brought the impeachment motion have 192 seats combined. That means they would need at least eight votes from Yoon's People Power Party. On Wednesday, 18 members of the PPP joined a vote that unanimously cancelled martial law 190-0 less than three hours after Yoon declared the measure on television, calling the opposition-controlled parliament a "den of criminals" bogging down state affairs. The vote took place as hundreds of heavily-armed troops encircled the National Assembly in an attempt to disrupt the vote and possibly to detain key politicians. Parliament said on Saturday that it would meet at 5 p.m. It will first vote on a bill appointing a special prosecutor to investigate influence peddling allegations surrounding Yoon's wife, and then on impeaching Yoon. The turmoil resulting from Yoon's bizarre and poorly-thought-out stunt has paralysed South Korean politics and sparked alarm among key diplomatic partners, including neighbouring Japan and Seoul's top ally the United States, as one of the strongest democracies in Asia faces a political crisis that could unseat its leader. Opposition lawmakers claim that Yoon's martial law declaration amounted to a self-coup and drafted the impeachment motion around rebellion charges. The PPP decided to oppose impeachment at a lawmakers' meeting, despite pleas by its leader Han Dong-hun, who isn't a lawmaker and has no vote. Following a party meeting on Friday, Han stressed the need to suspend Yoon's presidential duties and power swiftly, saying he ''could potentially put the Republic of Korea and its citizens in great danger". Han said he had received intelligence that during the brief period of martial law Yoon ordered the country's defense counterintelligence commander to arrest and detain unspecified key politicians based on accusations of "anti-state activities''. Hong Jang-won, first deputy director of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, later told lawmakers in a closed-door briefing that Yoon called after imposing martial law and ordered him to help the defence counterintelligence unit to detain key politicians. The targeted politicians included Han, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung and National Assembly speaker Woo Won Shik, according to Kim Byung-kee, one of the lawmakers who attended the meeting. The Defence Ministry said it had suspended the defense counterintelligence commander, Yeo In-hyung, who Han alleged had received orders from Yoon to detain the politicians. The ministry also suspended Lee Jin-woo, commander of the capital defence command, and Kwak Jong-geun, commander of the special warfare command, over their involvement in enforcing martial law. Former Defence Minister Kim Yong Hyun, who has been accused of recommending Yoon to enforce martial law, has been placed under a travel ban and faces an investigation by prosecutors over rebellion charges. Vice Defence Minister Kim Seon Ho, who became acting defense minister after Yoon accepted Kim Yong Hyun's resignation on Thursday, has testified to parliament that it was Kim Yong Hyun who ordered troops to be deployed to the National Assembly after Yoon imposed martial law.
Ex-OpenAI engineer who raised legal concerns about the technology he helped build has died
Older adults in the U.S. skip needed medical care at much higher rates compared to other developed countries, according recent survey conducted by The Commonwealth Fund . The study said 8% to 9% of older Americans skip necessary treatment compared to just 2% of seniors in countries like Sweden, the Netherlands, the U.K. and Germany. The survey said nearly all Americans aged 65 or older are covered by Medicare and have access to most basic health services. Yet they pay more for health care and are more likely to postpone or skip needed care because of the cost. RELATED STORY | Medicare enrollment is complicated, but saving money doesn't have to be Nearly a quarter of older adults in the U.S. spent at least $2,000 over the past year on out-of-pocket expenses, compared to less than 5% in France and the Netherlands who spent the same amount, the survey said. The survey results are similar for dental and mental health care, The Commonwealth Fund said. One in five older adults in the U.S., Australia and Canada reported skipping needed dental care, compared to 5% or less of older adults in the Netherlands and Germany. The survey said less than 5% of older adults in all countries reported skipping mental health services over the past year because of the cost.
