Unlike scores of people who scrambled for the blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight in recent years, Danielle Griffin had no trouble getting them. The 38-year-old information technology worker from New Mexico had a prescription. Her pharmacy had the drugs in stock. And her health insurance covered all but $25 to $50 of the monthly cost. For Griffin, the hardest part of using the new drugs wasn’t access. It was finding out that the much-hyped medications didn’t really work for her. “I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” said Griffin, who watches her diet, drinks plenty of water and exercises regularly. “I’ve done everything right with no success. It’s discouraging.” In clinical trials, most participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro to treat obesity lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight — up to 50 pounds or more in many cases. But roughly 10% to 15% of patients in those trials were “nonresponders” who lost less than 5% of their body weight. Now that millions of people have used the drugs, several obesity experts told The Associated Press that perhaps 20% of patients — as many as 1 in 5 — may not respond well to the medications. It's a little-known consequence of the obesity drug boom, according to doctors who caution eager patients not to expect one-size-fits-all results. “It's all about explaining that different people have different responses,” said Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert at Massachusetts General Hospital The drugs are known as GLP-1 receptor agonists because they mimic a hormone in the body known as glucagon-like peptide 1. Police told Lentini that the high schoolers broke in through an unlocked window, and threw the party despite the ignored request. Wayanad(Kerala), Nov 23 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Saturday scored her maiden electoral victory from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala with a huge margin of over 4.1 lakh votes to retain the hill constituency, won by her brother Rahul Gandhi in the LS polls earlier this year. While BJP candidate Navya Haridas attributed Priyanka's win to the "long political tradition" in the constituency of supporting the Congress, CPI(M)-led LDF's Sathyan Mokeri claimed it was due to "the focus on Gandhi family's sacrifices" like the killings of Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi to evoke the people's sentiments. Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan congratulated the winners of the Wayanad LS and Palakkad and Chelakkara assembly bypolls. Priyanka got 6,22,338 votes which was 4,10,931 votes more than Mokeri's tally of 2,11,407. Mokeri's tally was also more than 70,000 votes less than what CPI's Annie Raja got in the 2024 LS polls in April this year in Wayanad. She had secured 2,83,023 votes. In the quiet and peaceful village of Aquileia, in northern Italy near the Adriatic Sea coast, archaeologists from the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) found something remarkable and unexpected. While performing excavations just to the west of the town, near an ancient road that once led to Rome and Milan, they unearthed the ruins of an early Christian basilica, which they knew immediately was more than 1,000 years old. After decades of excavations in and around Aquileia , this is the first large-scale structure that has been discovered. Based on its architectural style, the ÖAW archaeologists have dated the church to the Byzantine period, and specifically to the reign of the celebrated emperor Justinian I , who ruled the Byzantine Empire from 527 to 565. As a part of his efforts to resurrect the glory days of the old Roman Empire, Justinian launched an ambitious monumental building campaign in the mid-550s, which included the construction of new and often spectacular Christian churches . “ The city was fortified under Emperor Justinian I with a mighty zigzag wall, for which there are the best comparisons in Thessaloniki. The discovery of the new basilica probably indicates a larger Byzantine building program,” archaeologist Stefan Groh explained in an Austrian Academy of Sciences press release . The city was utterly destroyed by the infamous Attila the Hun and his men in 452, which was actually Attila’s first major success as a conqueror of Roman Empire lands. The Roman Empire’s Crisis of the Third Century The Komnenian Dynasty: The Byzantine Royal Family That Kept Coming Back As the Byzantine Empire emerged in the old Roman territory to the east, centered in its capital city of Constantinople, the lands of Italy fell under the control of the Ostrogoths , a Germanic people from the west. They formed an uneasy alliance with the Byzantines, but in 540 Justinian I sent his forces into Italy as a part of his efforts to gain full control over the lands surrounding Rome. It was during this period when the Arian Goths were driven out of the area around Aquileia, after which Justinian would have been able to begin constructing the city ́s new basilica, which would be his gift to the people . The newly discovered basilica would have been built to help restore the Catholic faith in an area that had fallen under the influence of Christian heretics. But at the same time, it also would have served as a symbol of the reconquest of Upper Italy by Justinian I. The building would have faced southeast toward Constantinople and Jerusalem when it was still standing, announcing its connection to the centers of Byzantine power and the Christian religion respectively. Ultimately the emperor’s efforts to secure control of the western Roman lands proved to be in vain, and his enemies the Lombards seized control of Aquileia around the year 560. The city never came close to regaining the wealth and influence it enjoyed before it was sacked by Attila, yet it managed to survive despite the challenges it faced and continues to exist to this day (although with just 3,000 inhabitants). The Nexus of Politics and Religion in the Ancient Roman World Revealed Now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Aquileia holds the distinction of being the last of the great Roman cities that has yet to be fully excavated. As such it still has the capacity to produce the occasional surprise, as the discovery of the new basilica so clearly demonstrates. Interestingly, perhaps the most famous building in the city is another basilica that was first erected in the fourth century. This is the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, which functions at the village’s primary Catholic church. The present facade of this building was actually constructed in the 11th century, so it escaped destruction at the hands of the invaders who besieged Aquileia and likely damaged its sister basilica in the latter half of the sixth century. Now that this long-lost religious structure has been excavated, archaeologists have a better understanding of how religion and politics intersected in ancient Italy and the surrounding area. ‘The extent to which these ancient ‘geopolitical’ building measures even radiated into our region can be seen from the bishop's church of Teurnia in the village of St. Peter in Holz, Austria, which was adapted in the sixth century AD with a similar building plan to the new basilica of Aquileia,” Stefan Groh noted, referencing a once Byzantine-controlled village located around 60 miles (100 kilometers) north of the newly unearthed church. North Carolina Republicans close in on enacting bill that weakens incoming Democratic governorBATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana's Republican-controlled Legislature approved a constitutional amendment on Friday that would allow them to expand the number of crimes in which juveniles between 14 and 16 years old could be tried as adults. The state's constitution currently outlines 15 violent juvenile offenses, such as rape, murder and armed robbery, which prosecutors can handle in adult courts. Any changes to that list of crimes must be approved by voters. But the constitutional amendment sponsored by Republican Sen. Heather Cloud — which require voter approval in March 29 elections to take effect — would allow legislators the power by a two-thirds vote to decide what juvenile crimes can be transferred to adult courts. It's part of a wider push in Louisiana, which already has the second-highest incarceration rate in the country behind Mississippi, to implement tough-on-crime policies under Republican Gov. Jeff Landry. Since taking office in January, Landry has passed laws to treat 17-year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system, largely eliminate parole and allow surgical castration as punishment for certain sex crimes against children. Supporters of the measure to make it easier to expand prosecution of juveniles as adults — backed only by Republican legislators — say it will grant lawmakers more flexibility to give prosecutors the tools they need to increase public safety. Vesting authority in the constitution "has hamstringed Louisiana from being able to address changes in an ever-changing juvenile crime landscape,” Cloud said on the Senate floor on Nov. 14. Royce Duplessis said on the Senate floor. “We’re going to say we’re just going to treat them all as adults, and we’re not going to do our part as a society, as policymakers, to address what’s really failing — this is not going to do a single thing to deter crime." Some lawmakers said that juveniles committing violent crimes had been deprived of care from a young age and were past the point of rehabilitation, blaming their families as opposed to societal factors. “Some of these kids are already lost when they’re 2 years old,” said Republican Rep. Tony Bacala in a House committee hearing. Unless they are transferred to an adult court, young people tried in juvenile court can only be imprisoned until age 21 according to state law. The effect of the proposed constitutional change will be to open the door for Republican lawmakers to give prosecutors the power to hand down lengthy prison sentences to 14- to 16-year-olds, including for less severe crimes, said Bruce Reilly, deputy director of the Louisiana-based criminal justice reform advocacy group Voice of the Experienced. The Louisiana District Attorneys Association and the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association said they supported the measure. But New Orleans Sheriff Susan Hutson said she was concerned the measure would “almost certainly further strain our already short staff” in the jail system. Federal law still considers 17-year-olds and younger as juveniles and requires them to be kept separate from adult inmates. District Attorney Tony Clayton, who represents West Baton Rouge and two other parishes, said he would not try a juvenile as an adult for having “marijuana in his wallet,” but for violent crimes. Violent crimes are on the decline nationwide according to the latest data from FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting. Since mid-2023, most violent crime has also been down in New Orleans, which in 2022 had the highest homicide rate among large cities nationwide. Conservative lawmakers argued this was the result of tough-on-crime penalties passed this year and Republican Gov. Jeff Landry's decision to send state troops to New Orleans. Lawmakers supporting the amendment have focused on high-profile violent crimes by juveniles, such as a deadly New Orleans carjacking case committed by teenagers — who were charged as adults — in which an elderly woman was beaten and dragged to her death. Zayn Malik has paid tribute to Liam Payne during a concert in his former One Direction band mate's hometown of Wolverhampton, saying he "hopes" the late star sees his gig. Love you bro" with a pink heart. However, he has not appeared to directly speak about Payne, who died aged 31 in Argentina in October, during the tour. Videos on social media showed Malik telling his audience at the University of Wolverhampton venue The Halls "I've been doing something, at the end of the show, every night, and it's been dedicated to my brother Liam Payne". "Rest in peace," Malik said. "I hope you're seeing this. We're in your hometown tonight - Wolverhampton, this is for you, Liam." Malik rescheduled his tour's original opening dates in Edinburgh due to Payne's funeral, which he attended with fellow One Direction stars Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan. Malik left One Direction in 2015 before the group went on indefinite hiatus in 2016, with the members all going on to pursue solo careers. Following the death of Payne, Malik said he "never got to thank" his friend for supporting him through some of the "most difficult" times in his life. "I lost a brother when you left us and can't explain to you what I'd give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly", he said in a statement shared to Instagram. "I will cherish all the memories I have with you in my heart forever. "There is no words that justify or explain how I feel right now other than beyond devastated. "I hope that wherever you are right now you are good and are at peace and you know how loved you are. Love you, bro." Argentinian prosecutors are investigating Payne's death and three people have been charged in connection with the incident. Payne died on October 16 of multiple traumas and "internal and external haemorrhage" after falling from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, a post-mortem report said.
