Alongside this name change, a National Air and Space Interests Coordination Center will be established in order to oversee both Thailand’s internal and external aerospace defense activities. The announcement was made last week by RTAF spokesperson Air Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee, following the first defense commanders meeting of the 2025 fiscal year. Before any of these proposals can officially take flight, legislative changes will be necessary. If all goes as expected, the process should be finalized by 2028. Thailand’s space agenda has traditionally been confined to research and socio-economic applications. In these areas, and in relative terms within Southeast Asia, Thailand is among the most advanced and active nations . Through its Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), founded as a public organization in 2000, Thailand has become a trailblazer in earth observation technology. The THEOS-1 and THEOS-2 satellites, launched in 2008 and 2023 respectively, have contributed immensely to the country’s agriculture and environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management. The next generation of THEOS, projected to launch by 2027, is being mostly if not entirely developed and assembled domestically, demonstrating Thailand’s progress in both technical expertise and infrastructure. GISTDA’s Assembly Integration and Testing Center in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor, home to the making of THEOS-3, has emerged as an important facility for both private space start-ups and the RTAF. It is here that Thai Universe-1, reportedly the RTAF’s first self-made nanosatellite crafted using affordable commercial-grade components instead of expensive space-grade ones, is undergoing testing. The RTAF’s foray into space took its first major step when Napa-1, contracted to the Dutch firm ISISPACE, entered orbit in 2020. The minimally modified Napa-2 quickly followed in 2021. The RTAF’s 80-page white paper , released earlier this year as an update to the 2020 edition, dedicates substantial attention to the growing significance of space. It highlights the precarious vulnerability that comes with reliance on space assets as major powers clash. At the same time, it stresses smaller powers’ need to harness space technology for enhanced military intelligence. This is crucial for the RTAF’s effective long-term operations across three designated areas: the global area of interest (where Thai citizens are located), area of influence (Southeast Asia), and area of responsibility (Thailand’s sovereign territory). The RTAF’s area of responsibility, which includes Thailand’s flight information region and exclusive economic zone, totals 1,979,722 square kilometers. So far from being an abrupt and hollow change as some might perceive, the RTAF’s latest efforts reflect the gradual consolidation of Thailand’s military space interest, which is modest and defensive in nature. This context explains why the Space Force is not being formed as an independent armed branch, but will remain attached to the Air Force. The proposed National Air and Space Interests Coordination Center is clearly modeled after the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center (Thai-MECC), Thailand’s centralized body for maritime security governance. As I wrote in an article published by the CSIS Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, Thai-MECC has proven highly effective in tackling threats to Thailand’s maritime interests, as it is legally empowered to conduct surveillance and investigations, and to mobilize resources from the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) and six other government agencies. Manpower isn’t much of an issue in the sense that Thai-MECC personnel are rotated from various agencies, avoiding the additional costs of new hires. An interesting point of observation will be the civil-military dynamics of the new coordination effort. The Thai-MECC is dominated by the RTN, whether on paper or in practice, leaving civilian agencies somewhat in the background. This arrangement hasn’t really raised questions because, even as the scope of maritime security has broadened markedly, the traditional military-centric lens on territorial defense remains intact. In contrast, the space domain has always been more closely tied to science. As such, it makes sense to think that the RTAF, while central, may not exert the same level of dominance in the up-and-coming Air and Space Interests Coordination Center as the RTN does with the Thai-MECC. The RTAF stands as the least conservative branch of Thailand’s military, as reflected in its relative openness to commanders with international qualifications and its ahead-of-the-curve publication of a comprehensive white paper. Both the RTN and the Army have shown a strict preference for domestically educated commanders , and it was only in the past two years that they began publishing their white papers. As I wrote in an article published by the CSIS Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, Thai-MECC has proven highly effective in tackling threats to Thailand’s maritime interests, as it is legally empowered to conduct surveillance and investigations, and to mobilize resources from the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) and six other government agencies. Manpower isn’t much of an issue in the sense that Thai-MECC personnel are rotated from various agencies, avoiding the additional costs of new hires. An interesting point of observation will be the civil-military dynamics of the new coordination effort. The Thai-MECC is dominated by the RTN, whether on paper or in practice, leaving civilian agencies somewhat in the background. This arrangement hasn’t really raised questions because, even as the scope of maritime security has broadened markedly, the traditional military-centric lens on territorial defense remains intact. In contrast, the space domain has always been more closely tied to science. As such, it makes sense to think that the RTAF, while central, may not exert the same level of dominance in the up-and-coming Air and Space Interests Coordination Center as the RTN does with the Thai-MECC. The RTAF stands as the least conservative branch of Thailand’s military, as reflected in its relative openness to commanders with international qualifications and its ahead-of-the-curve publication of a comprehensive white paper. Both the RTN and the Army have shown a strict preference for domestically educated commanders , and it was only in the past two years that they began publishing their white papers. LONDON (AP) — Arsenal moved up to second place in the Premier League with a 1-0 home win against Ipswich on Friday. China appears to have recently conducted the trial run of the high-speed rail, the CR450. Tipped to be the world’s fastest commercial train, the CR450 is expected to start operations in 2025. The train, which has a trial speed of 280 mph (450km/h), was reportedly on a trial run from Tianjin to Beijing. A series of videos showcasing the train surfaced on social media in November before being taken down. Last month’s apparently leaked test video featured a train marked CR450AF-0001, while the latest images show an eight-car CR450 with its serial number covered by white tape, reported SCMP . The CR450 bullet train, China’s most recently designed high-speed train model, will be able to operate at speeds of 248 miles (400 kilometers) per hour during commercial run. The new model is significantly faster than the CR400 Fuxing high-speed trains currently in service, which operate at speeds of 350 kilometers per hour. CR450 is 12 percent lighter Compared to the CR400, the CR450 is 12 percent lighter, consumes 20 percent less energy, and has a 20 percent improved braking performance, according to China Railway. One way to help those goals become reality, financial experts say, is to make them as specific as possible. Then, track your progress, while allowing flexibility for unexpected challenges. “It’s easier to track progress when we know where we are going,” says Sylvie Scowcroft, a certified financial planner and founder of The Financial Grove in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That’s why she encourages her clients to set clearly defined goals, often related to paying off a specific debt, saving a certain amount per month or improving their credit score. Here are more tips from financial experts about crafting 2025 financial goals : Trying to accomplish too much can feel overwhelming. Instead, pick your priorities, says Cathleen Tobin, CFP and owner of Moonbridge Financial Design in Rhinebeck, New York. She suggests focusing on those big, often emotionally-driven goals to find motivation. “It’s more compelling than just a number,” she says. For example, do you want to make sure you’re on track for retirement or save money for a house? “Start there.” Scowcroft says she sees clients get tripped up by selecting overly broad goals, such as “get better with money.” Instead, she encourages people to select specific action items, such as “sign up for a budgeting tool and set aside time each month to learn where my money is going.” That level of specificity provides direction so you know what steps to take next, she adds. For example, if your top priority is to become debt-free, then your specific goal might be to pay off an extra $200 of your debt balance each month. Tobin says labeling savings accounts so they correspond with goals can also help. An emergency fund could be named something like “Peace of mind in 2025,” so you remember why you’re saving every time you make a transfer. “It’s more motivating than just ‘emergency fund,’” Tobin says. Measuring your progress as the year unfolds is also a critical component of successful goal setting, Tobin says. She compares it to weight loss. If you want to lose 20 pounds by June, then you need to lose about a pound a week for the first six months of the year. Similarly, she says it helps to break savings goals into microsteps that specify what you need to do each week. Schedule a weekly or monthly check-in with yourself to make sure you are meeting those smaller goals along the way. You might want to review your debt payoff progress or check your credit score , for example. “Being able to break it down into steps that can be done each week or twice a month really helps,” Tobin says. If your goal is to save more money , then setting up an automatic transfer each month can help turn that goal into reality, as long as you know you have the money in your checking account to spare. He recommends starting small to ease into the change. “I wouldn’t jump to double what you’re currently saving,” he says. For example, when it comes to saving in a retirement account, if you’re starting with a 3% contribution, you might want to bump it up to 4%, then slowly increase it from there. “My number one piece of advice is to start small, but make sure you scale over time,” Hunsberger adds. “Because it’s gradual, you probably won’t notice it impacting your lifestyle.” “Stay flexible,” Scowcroft says. “Part of it is just being kind to yourself and not being too rigid.” When unexpected challenges come up, such as a big unplanned expense, you might have to pause making progress on your goal and reset. You might even need to change your goal. Scowcroft says that doesn’t mean you “failed,” just that life changed your plans. Dwelling on any negativity won’t help your forward progress. Sharing your goals with a friend can also make it easier to reach them, Scowcroft says. “It really helps to have an accountability buddy,” she says. Two Black-owned B.C. businesses will receive grants and legal services as part of a small business program. The fifth annual Black-owned small business grant program, organized by law firm Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, is aimed at supporting such enterprises across the country. Judith Kasiama of Vancouver-based Colour the Trails and Naa Sheka Riby-Williams of White Rock-based Naa Sheka Fashion were two of six recipients from across Canada, according to Tuesday’s (Nov. 26) announcement. More than $100,000 will be distributed to recipients, who will also receive legal services. More than $537,000 in grants have been distributed to Black-owned and operated businesses through the law firm’s program. Founded in 2017, Colour the Trails is a business that focuses on making outdoor activities more accessible to Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC). It does this by hosting outdoor events, creating media that features the stories of BIPOC and, where possible, providing financial support to those facing financial hurdles when it comes to participating. Naa Sheka Fashion is a clothing line that fuses Western and Ghanaian influences using traditional West African textiles. All of these owners are multi-millionaires and have boardrooms. The oil states have only Arab royalty. Infantino’s behaviour is open to question. Clearly, he likes to operate as an emperor, altering the fixture list in open warfare with Uefa. His Club World Cup intrudes on the close season and relegates the Champions League to a runner-up in importance. Plus, any possibility of an open competition for the 2034 enlarged World Cup has been shut tight. Infantino, a lawyer by trade, knows just how to get his own way and pay. When he was elected Fifa president unopposed in 2023, his annual salary with bonuses was raised by 33 per cent to more than £5million a year. And, as a Swiss-Italian, he now lives in Florida and pays no taxes there. Although some countries, notably Germany, asked questions, he will remain president until 2027 when he is likely to stand again for a further four years.
